Virtuosity

Artist: ChopsTitle: VirtuosityRating: 3 StarsReviewed by: Toshitaka Kondo Being the first Asian American hip-hop act signed to a major label, the Mountain Brothers dropped real s###, no gimmicks. Unlike potential flash-in-the-pan rappers who want you to learn Chinese. Their debut Self: Volume 1 established them as a humorous and talented outfit repping the Philly proletariat. Now their producer, Chops, brings a diverse cast for his directorial debut, Virtuosity. Growing up is never easy, and Chops’ sonic evolution is somewhat awkward. The subtle drums and laidback grooves of Self are gone. Instead, synth sounds have taken over bringing loud, snappy snares with them. This harder sound may have been necessary because of the various emcees featured. However, with 26 tracks (not including a hidden track), at times the arrangements or drum patterns are very similar. Also, featuring a name brand rapper doesn’t correlate with quality music. Raekwon’s “What’s F##### Wit Us” is forgettable, while Planet Asia’s “Niggarachi” is just confusing. I guess it’s a tribute to Slick Rick? Despite showing potential, a mere 12 bars from Kanye West on the autobiographical “Changing Lanes” sounds abrupt. Although the pianos at the end are pleasant. It’s the lesser-known Illadelph artists that bring the strongest efforts. Baby Blak gets super political on “Tears,” pulling the devil’s hoe card and refusing to shed tears about life’s difficulties. Politically incorrect continues with Kev Turner’s angry rants at the music industry on “War.” Chops’ bells and multilayered strings, help Turner get his point across: “The flow that I spits is not to be confused with/Commercial radio rap put out for your amusement/God gave me a brain, so Imma use it.” Production-wise, the album is good if you’re not too attached to Chops’ earlier work. Although I am, there are still tracks on Virtuosity that come off. His rolling xylophone loop and soft bass line give an appropriately somber feel to “Still Life.” Also, jazzy musical interludes like “Juiciness” and “Royal Entrance,” showcase his musical abilities and make for easy listening. Producers, like emcees, are plagued with continual comparisons to their earlier work. It’s natural to want a starting point when analyzing something. On Virtuosity Chops is almost unrecognizable from his previous material. Determining whether it’s a new, improved Chops will depend on personal preference.

Croatian Hip-Hop Scene Spotlighted

In a testament to the diversity of Hip-Hop music and culture, the Zagreb, Croatian Hip-Hop scene will be featured in the “Whut’s Really Hood” section of the March 2004 issue of The Source.”It is going to be the first two-page article on Zagreb in The Source, even though magazines like Mugshot, Hip-Hop Connection, Backspin and others covered our scene before,” Phat Phillie, co-author of the article told AllHipHop.com.Phat Phillie, host of Croatia’s popular mixshow, Blackout Rap Show, along with Croation Hip-Hop journalist by Velimir Grgic, penned the article. The development of the Zagreb Hip-Hop scene will be detailed, covering emcee’s, producers, Deejay’s, graffiti artists, B-Boys, clubs, radio stations, restaurants, records stores, clothing stores and more.”Croatian hip hop producers like Koolade, Baby Dooks & Dash have successfully produced and remixed artists like Sean Paul, Fat Joe, Angie Martinez, Masta Ace, El Da Sensei, Das Efx, Lil Mo, Miri Ben Ari and others,” Phillie continued. “Baby Dooks also produced a new Erick Sermon single “Close Da Club” feat. Redman & Sy Scott due out soon.

Ex-Football Player and Republican To Open Nightclub

A Former NFL player and Hy Singer, the Republican county chair in Brooklyn, are forming an unlikely partnership as the duo are set to open a hip-hop nightclub in Coney Island, according to recent reports. Gary Gooden, who played with the Oakland Raiders, became interested in opening a nightclub in the Brooklyn neighborhood when he saw the Anderson’s Music Hall building during a motorcycle ride through the borough. Singer, who is also a real estate investor, owns the historic building. Though the building has been vacant for the past twenty years, it once featured prominent singers and entertainers. Now, Gooden is trying to bring back the allure the 105-year-old building once had. “Hip-hop events, pop events – I’m going to do everything,” the East New York native told the New York Post. “We’ve got to bring the neighborhood back.” Gooden has named the club Velocity and he plans to open for business by this Easter.

MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water

Artist: David BannerTitle: MTA2: Baptized in Dirty WaterRating: 3 StarsReviewed by: Yama Caviness MTA2: Baptized In Dirty Water is the follow up release to David Banner’s certified platinum album Mississippi: The Album. Impressive collaborations include Scarface, 8-Blall, Busta Rhymes, and Nelly. Despite all of this potential on paper, the album still feels more like a remix album with bonus tracks, instead of a brand new independent effort. The overall tone of Baptized In Dirty Water is dark and the signature production of Banner himself keeps most of the tracks crunk and hard-hitting. Both “Like a Pimp” and Nelly’s “Airforce Ones” get the remix treatment on the album with Busta Rhymes and Twista adding their flava to the former. Tear the club up themes appear often in songs like “Mama House” and “Talk to Me” for those who like to listen to their music when they’re drunk, high, and/or crunk as hell. For others, a hint of Banner’s social awareness is found in lyrics like “My lord, I’m losin my soul and my mind/The devil’s creepin close, my people fallin’ behind,” from “My Lord”. Although some may not be ready, the raunchy ass track “Gots To Go” featuring Devin the Dude and Bun B of UGK, will surely be appreciated most by David Banner’s southern following. David Banner explains Baptized In Dirty Water to mean that sometimes life circumstances cause people with good intentions to do bad things in order to survive the game. Thus, MTA2:Baptized In Dirty Water is an ideal title that sums up David Banner’s second effort; although it was a good try, he’s not able to stay on top of his game.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Set To Hip-Hop

Adisa Banjoko’s “One Mic,” a political radio show, premiered excerpts of a rare speech made by Dr. Martin Luther King set to hip-hop music.Producer Inspector Double Negative debuted the exclusive remix last night (January 18).”Now let me make this clear in the beginning, that I see this war as an unjust, evil & futile war. The time has come for America to hear the truth about this tragic war,” King said of the Vietnam war.The show was dedicated to Dr. King’s legacy and his quest for peace.“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speaks from the grave about the Vietnam war, but his perspective parallels the current state this world is in right now,” Banjoko said. “You quickly realize that the political side of Dr. King has been deliberately suppressed by the media.”Other guests on the show included Hip-Hop journalist and cultural critic Charlie Braxton, David Life and Sharon Gannon (yoga instructors of Russell Simmons) and M.C. Shamako Noble from the Hip Hop Congress. The speech can be found at iciclenetworks.com.

Twista: Back For The First Time

In Webster’s Dictionary, a “kamikaze” is described as “an extremely reckless person who seems to court death.” If you listen to Twista spit his trademark voracious lyrics in his usual reckless, yet precise manner, you would know his career is nowhere near death. In fact, with the release of his long-awaited album, Kamikaze, scheduled to hit stores in late January, his path seems to be as bright as it ever was. Having already received offers from arguably Hip-Hop’s most lucrative label, being on the verge of taking the car world by storm with new custom rims, and boasting the hottest single to begin 2004, Twista is on a pace as fast as his mouth. Was the long wait for his album worth it? Read on and you be the judge. Allhiphop.com: Let’s get into this new album a little bit, dog. It has been about a year or so that the album has been held up, right? Twista: Man, a little longer than that, more like a few. It’s all good though. It’s coming in January this time. It’s called “Kamikaze.” I got more stuff produced by Kanye West on there. I got R. Kelly featuring and producing a cut. I got a posse cut with (Memphis) Bleek, Freeway, and Chris on there. I got a laid back pimp cut on there with 8-Ball and Too Short. And, I got a blaze it up, crunk cut with Ludacris. Allhiphop.com: When is the exact release date of the album this month? Twista: January 27th. Allhiphop.com: Why do you think the record label kept your album on the shelves for so long? Twista: I feel like we was in a position where there was enough money spent on my project, and my whole situation was we couldn’t risk putting out another album and not have it do good. So, I had to come out right other than come out quick. It was more so about me finding that right single to really drop the album with. I came with “Slow Jamz” and it was the right time. Allhiphop.com: So, the label situation is on point as it should be? Twista: Everything is smooth, everything is on point, ready to roll, and everything’s on a positive note. Let’s do it. Allhiphop.com: Describe the experience you had working with multi-talented individuals such Kanye West and Jamie Foxx on one single. Twista: It was chemistry and a blessing. Working with Kanye is always fun. We’ve been working together for years, being from Chicago. With Jamie being a comedian, but him singing and trying to get his thing out, that was lovely, too. People had a chance to hear him and not know it was him. So, they liked it already before they realized it was him. It gave him a chance to show his true talent. Allhiphop.com: I think Jamie is the most underrated singer in the world. His musical talents are phenomenal, but he does not get the credit he deserves. Twista: That man can get down! Allhiphop.com: We have been reading speculative news about you possibly joining the ROC camp. Is that situation going anywhere, or was it alot of media hype? Twista: That’s my family that I roll with in the industry. We were trying to make something happen on the business side, but we couldn’t get it crackin’ quick enough to put the album out. We couldn’t get it crackin’ before the release of this album. I’m signed to Atlantic right now, but we are going to get something crackin’ on a positive note. Allhiphop.com: Are you talking about signing a new deal with them or something collaborative? Twista: Some type of collaboration, however it may be business-wise. As long as it’s some type of collaboration to help me get closer. I’m straight on the label jumping thing. I’m home, and I got to make something happen on a positive note. Allhiphop.com: How many years have been in this game? I can remember when I was little shorty coming up, and you had this joint called “Peace Sign.” Twista: Man, we’re talking 12 or 13 years. You went way back on me. (laughs) Allhiphop.com: How many more years do you see yourself doing this for? Twista: Well, I ain’t trying to be an old man on the forty side, doing it the way the young guys are doing it. I definitely feel like if you want to respect this as a music, you got to realize that it don’t go nowhere like none of the other music. You got rock bands and country bands that go out and tour for 20 or 30 years off of the same songs that they did when they were younger. I still want to be able to get out there, do my thing, and let people see what Twista did or used to do. But, I don’t want to be out there old trying to do it like a shorty. I still want to do it on the level of letting people appreciate the music that I did. Allhiphop.com: Artists are well known for being in the game a few years, putting out a couple of records, having a hit or two, and after that it is a wrap. What do you attribute to being in this game for this long? Twista: One of the main things is loving it enough to keep wanting to do it. To keep trying it, no matter what the downfalls. I love it too much to just stop, you know? I never believed that if you blow a shot, that’s it. I feel like true talent is always going to overshadow everything. If you got true talent, but your record is bunk and it flopped or whatever, take your ass in the studio! If you go in there and make a jam, who’s going to deny you? Allhiphop.com: What responsibility do you take in putting Chicago on the Hip-Hop map finally? Do you see yourself solely or partially responsible? […]

Paris To Release Exclusive Public Enemy Album

Rapper Paris’ Guerrilla Funk Recordings has reached an agreement to manufacture and distribute an exclusive, Paris-produced Public Enemy album entitled Rebirth Of A Nation.“I’ve had admiration for Public Enemy since the inception of their career,” Paris told AllHipHop.com. “They are one of the most important groups in hip-hop history and represent a time when music that made sense for us as a people wasn’t watered down and made accessible to the masses.”The relationship between the two politically charged hip-hop powerhouses began in 2002, on Public Enemy’s Revolverlution, which featured Paris on the remix to the lead single. Both Paris and Public Enemy stepped it up a notch on Paris’ current album Sonic Jihad by collaborating with Dead Prez on the cut “Freedom.””The production approach I’m taking with this project will be to capture the essence of what I love about them – controlled chaos – with potent, razor-sharp lyrics and unrelenting hardcore music,” Paris revealed. “These are the styles that we’ve both built our careers on, and it’s necessary to show comradery among those of us who live to uplift through entertainment.”Rebirth Of A Nation, a name spin on D.W. Griffith’s controversial 1915 Civil War movie “Birth Of A Nation,” is slated for a summer 2004 release date and will be available exclusively through Guerrilla Funk Recordings.”Guerrilla Funk was founded to bring balance back to the game and counteract the bullsh*t commercialized garbage the industry is giving us right now,” Paris said. “They’ve been influential to me beyond words and it’s an honor for me to get down with them.”In related Guerilla Funk news, T-KASH has signed with the label to release his debut, Afterparty Music.T-KASH was featured on several of The Coup’s projects and the group will lend a hand to his debut album along with Paris.Paris will also re-teamed with The Conscious Daughters, whose debut album, The Conscious Daughters and follow up Gamers, sold over 500,000 copies combined.Their third album, The Nutcracker Suite, features will touch on self-empowerment and sisterhood and will feature production by Rick Rock (Jay-Z, Ice Cube, 2Pac) and others.

Clipse Talk About Dark New Album

With six Grammy nominations the Neptunes’ influence may be no greater than it is at this moment, however the Clipse don’t want any of the duo’s pop-perfection production. “Beat wise, we won’t let them duplicate nothing,” Pusha T told AllHipHop.com about the ‘Tunes contribution to their second album, Hell Hath No Fury. The Clipse are putting the final touches on their sophomore effort and say fans should expect a darker album.Ironically, Pusha T said the Neptunes were supportive of the group switching gears to a more sinister sound.“They were really complimentary to what we were doing,” the rapper said. “[Though] the album is really dark, we’re really not going to lose a lot of fans with this one.”A big reason for the new sound, according to Pusha T, is the lyrical growth of Virginia’s Finest.“A sixteen-bar spitter and call it a day,” Pusha T said. But now the younger half of the act believes through diligence, he’s learned his craft.“The last album I could tell you I didn’t know how to write songs. I was doing the best I could,” he said. “I did a lot of observing… and just critiquing myself, basically. In accordance with all the greats I like.“It’s like I’m not just trying to find the hottest punch line these days. I’m trying to make sure the fan, or the consumer, or whoever just gets in my world and gets into my whole mood. And I think that’s what makes all the greats great.”While the new album has been finished for some time, Pusha T explained that he and Malice are waiting for last minute guest appearances. Yet he remained tightlipped about revealing who would be sharing time on the mic with them. However, he quickly added the album could stand as it is, without anyone else.“I don’t want to put it out there right now because it’s not done yet,” he said. “But the album is done. I’m so happy with it, that at this point I don’t even need they a**. We good, man.”In addition to new material, fans can expect a DVD documentary chronicling the Clipse titled “Behind the Grind.” The DVD will be available in March of this year, when their album is released.

Tek Of Smif-N-Wessun Goes Solo

While most Boot Camp Click and Duck Down devotees may be clamoring for Smif-N-Wessun to return to “Bucktown,” Tek, one half of the duo, has plans of his own. After being urged on by radio personalities and Brooklynites, the rapper has decided to release a solo album.“It’s in the works. We’ve been rocking,” Tek told AllHipHop.com in a recent interview. “They’ve been hollering at me for a couple of years, I should do this, I should do that. In these days and times, you gotta separate nyourself from sh*t that’s not doing what it’s suppose to do.”Though the Brooklyn-bred emcee is breaking ranks from his rhyme partner, Steele, he explains the move is amicable and a conscious strategy on the duos part to induce their creativity while not breaking up.“It’s just something that I had to branch out and do being a career move for me. And plus, he [Steele] was doing his own thing,” he said. “To avoid bumping heads anywhere down the line, he do what he do, I do what I do. And then we still come together and do the Smif-N-Wessun thing.”As to whether there is any beef brewing the two, Tek adds: “That’s my PNC (partner in crime) for life. It ain’t never gonna be no beef between Tek and Steele. None of that.”In fact, Tek said he’d be working with Steele on a couple of tracks for his album. The rapper didn’t disclose any more information regarding his album, but said it should be hitting shelves late in the first quarter or early in the second quarter. In other BCC news, Tek stated estranged member Rock has been working on new material, but he doesn’t know if the rapper will ever rejoin the click.“I can’t call that man’s shots. I can’t think for him,” Tek said. “From what I hear, he’s doing his own thing and I wish him all the best success in the world. From the grace of Allah, I hope he do good. (But) I don’t know what he’s gonna to do

Mystikal Sentenced To Six Years

Michael “Mystikal” Taylor was sentenced to six years in prison for sexual battery. The 33-year-old Grammy nominated rapper accepted the six years in a plea agreement and will immediately begin serving time. The victim, Tyler’s former hairstylist, accused the rapper and two bodyguards of forcing her to perform oral sex, after they accused her of stealing $80,000.Baton Rouge Judge Tony Marabella ruled that a videotape the men made proved the sexual acts were not consensual.Marabella concluded the victim had been “terrorized.””If it weren’t for the victim, his sentence would have been the maximum 10 years,” Marabella said. “The court is convinced that the defendant believes he is above the law and can take the law into his own hands.”In January of 2003 Tyler assumed that he would settle the case and declared his innocence.”I was ready to go all the way, full fledge ’cause it’s the principle,” Tyler told AllHipHop.com. “The person that was involved in it was real dear to me, I still don’t believe it. I refuse to believe they could do something like this to me after all I had done for them. That’s like taking in a foster child and he kills you or robs you. That’s serious, that’s someone I considered to be a true sister.”The other two men, Leland “Pokie” Ellis, 37, received three years, while Vercy Carter, received four years.”You got to be a little more careful with your love and your trust, you cant just throw it out there like that even though my trust was earned with this person,” Tyler continued. “This was five years in, man. I couldn’t have saw that coming in a million years, I would have bet my life on it.”Tyler has already paid the woman $350,000. The money and the plea were his attempt to prove he is “continuing to try to make up to all involved for the distress.”The three men pleaded guilty in June, but withdrew the plea, claiming the judge was biased after viewing the tape. The motion was withdrawn Thursday, which led to their sentencing.

9th Wonder: Changing The Game

Few people fully understand how 9th Wonder changed the game for producers. In 2003, he created one of the most fan-friendly trends, remixing entire albums. He took Nas’ God’s Son and revamped it into God’s Stepson. Since, a slew of others have followed suit, with largely favorable results. His work with his crew Little Brother was a throwback to the great producers like Pete Rock or Marley Marl, those beatmaestros that held down entire albums. AllHiphop.com talked with the 28-year-old prodigy that went from Little Brother to Big Jigga in one summer. AllHipHop.com: What made you start doing these remixes, especially the Jay-Z project? 9th Wonder: They were releasing the Black Album acapella anyway, and I know nobody was going to expect me to do it since I did God’s Stepson. But cats don’t understand is one of the main reasons I did God’s Step Son was not only because it was acapella, but because I really wanted a chance. When you remixing somebody’s joint it feels like your working with that person. Everybody is going to want to know what I did to it. I got my dream. AllHipHop: To actually be on the album? 9th: Yeah and also I got the chance to work with him and not just that, but on one of the most historical albums ever, The Black Album, his last album. I got my dream shot. Other than me there were three cats that did Step Son or did a Nas record. I’d rather just sit back and watch cats do whatever and jump on it. It’s like when 50 Cent came out with a mixtape just talking, remixing other peoples songs. How many you know were coming out doing that? AllHipHop: The mixtape thing is getting real old now. 9th: Exactly. I’m waiting to see who puts out what and then I’ll put out a joint, but I’m not really pressing it. AllHipHop: I heard you were the first one doing it remixes like this. 9th: Yea I did it first, then Soul Supreme did Soulmatic and then MF Doom did Nastradoomus. Then this other cat did Hova’s Son and took all of Nas’ acapella’s and put them over Jay-Z beats, which I never heard before. I guess it’s something I started, remixing old records. For a long time, cats would put acapellas over beats and keep it for themselves. Me? I put it out there. AllHipHop: So what’s Little Brother up to, anything new? 9th: Well we’re trying to get a deal with a major, we’re in the works of doing that. We’re working on a new record, trying to get guest appearances and hope everybody will be surprised as to who our guest appearances will be. AllHipHop: On the album? 9th: Yea, we’re trying to raise this backpacking group. Outside of that whole label, rap is rap. And there is dope music and there’s wack music, that’s how it goes. We are trying to find dope MC’s whether it be from the underground or Louisiana. It don’t matter, dope songs are dope songs. But that’s what we’re trying to do now and hopefully the Jay-Z thing will help us out. AllHipHop: A lot of people call you the new Pete Rock. 9th: Yea. It’s like this, you always know that cat that you grew up with or went to school with that had the nice ride? They had this they had that. But Didn’t really have to say nothing to no girls, didn’t have to develop a personality or talk game? I quote, "It’s the same way with music." So all these cats that got all this stuff, but no feeling of Hip-Hop music in their soul, their music is garbage. On the other hand the cats who ain’t blessed with all that, as far as equipment, they take what they have and flip it. That’s why Pete Rock is the master of the SP 1200, because it’s 12 seconds of sampling time but he takes that 12 seconds and flips it. You know what I’m saying? AllHipHop: Yeah. 9th: So all that big studio and all that that doesn’t impress me. I’m really concerned with what’s coming out of it. Your finished result. It’s nice to have a cool setting, but what’s the point of having all that if you can’t work it? AllHipHop: My brother still has the ASR10. It’s not really the equipment, it’s you. 9th: Kanye uses the ASR10 man. I mean make n*ggas change and do what your doing, don’t follow so much. A lot of people came down on me like, why do you use fruity loops? I ain’t have a choice. I did this beat for Jay-Z in the studio from my laptop. He listened to like 29 of my beats, but he didn’t choose any off that CD. I guess he was seeing if I was good enough for the job. So I did it in like 20 minutes and he was like man, I haven’t never seen nothing like this before. AllHipHop: So you were right there in Jay-Z’s face making a beat? 9th: Well he was in and out, but he told me what he wanted me to do, because he gave me a idea for a song, that’s why when you read the credits it says "Produced by 9th Wonder for The Planet" and at the end it says "and Jay-Z." He gave me the idea to chop the song up, but I was like give me 20 minutes and put it on Pro Tools. It’s just the fact that you got to change the game. It’s my way of changing the game, because I ain’t about to learn no machines. For what? I made it this far, why should I change.? AllHipHop: Well going to a major the stakes get even higher. Democratic Presidential Candidate Hits The Streets With Hip-Hop

The last time snipers took to the streets of Washington D.C., mayhem ensued and brewed into the latest national crisis. This time, however, a different breed of snipers is taking to the streets of the Chocolate City as presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich is using a hip-hop street team to bolster his bid presidential campaign.Kucinich has partnered with a D.C based hip-hop group to form the Dennis Kucinich Hip-Hop street team.Members of the street team, also known as snipers, have passed out pamphlets to partygoers and poets around the local clubs and spoken-word venues. The Ohio Congressman is attempting to raise his profile in the city where most of the national attention has gone to the likes of Dr. Howard Dean and retired general Wesley Clark. Yu-Lan Tu, the DC/MD State Coordinator for the Dennis Kucinich for President Campaign, believes the street team is alternative way to introduce their platform to the nation’s capital.”We are trying to use innovative ways of getting out the votes not only to raise awareness for our candidate,” he said. “But to also support a primary that is trying to bring awareness to the fact that residents of DC lack representation in Congress.”With eight candidates vying for the presidential nomination at this year’s Democratic National Convention in Boston, hip-hop has become very influential in winning the bid.General Clark has quoted OutKast lyrics during the campaign trail; Al Sharpton has already held a fundraiser at Jay-Z’s 40/40 club; and Contrabandit.com and the Source recently co-sponsored a presidential forum in Iowa.
