Chino XL Recording New Version Of “Poison Pen”

Rapper Chino XL is in the recording studio and working on his latest album, Chino XL Is Poison Pen. The album was supposed to be released in February of 2003. Chino explained the delay, saying he wanted to re-record the album, because the first version of the album was "too dark." "It’s a completely different album," Chino told AllHipHop.com. "This album is my actual expression about how much hip-hop really means to me. You might only get into this mode once in your lifetime, so I figured let me just do it." Chino said that the album is being created in a four month span and during the time he is recording, he has scaled back his budding acting career to focus on the music. Chino will also make a guest appearance on one of the most anticipated collaborations albums, between four of the most gifted rappers in hip-hop. Despite Canibus being in the Army and Ras Kass being locked down, The Four Horsemen album, which also includes Killah Priest and Kurupt, will be finally see the light of day. "It was an inevitable thing," Chino said. "Priest is featured on my album, me and Canibus have wanted to rock together for awhile and I got a crazy respect for him and you know me and Ras go way back. I am going to be on two songs so far." With Ras being locked down and Canibus in the Army, the obstacle of getting the rappers recorded is currently being worked out. "I would love for us to all get in the same room. You can send tracks back and forth and have correspondence and communication, but when you get artists in the room who have love and admiration for each other and the art, the cohesion between the artists and what they right becomes something, even if they don’t talk to each other. I would like to record some of the songs in the studio together." Recording is slated to start at the end of the month, when Canibus finishes his Army duties. There is no release date for the Four Horsemen project. The group is currently negotiating a deal. Chino XL’s Poison Pen hit’s stores next year on Activate Records.

Foxy Brown No Longer With Def Jam

Rapper Foxy Brown is no longer with Def Jam Records after publicly butting heads with the CEO of the Island Def Jam Music Group, Lyor Cohen. Brown’s management confirmed with AllHipHop.com that she was no longer with Def Jam, but would not provide details on her release from the label. In April, Brown appeared on Wendy William’s WBLS radio show and made it clear that she wished to sever ties with the label, after her album Ill Na Na Part 2: The Fever, was shelved indefinitely. "[Cohen’s] response was, ‘Over my dead body am I letting you go. You’re stuck.’ Verbatim," Foxy said. During that interview Foxy expressed a desire to work with Dre’s Aftermath label, citing the creative freedom his artists seem to enjoy. Def Jam refused to comment. Def Jam and Bad Boy announced that they would jointly release albums by 112 and Foxy Brown in February of 2003, after 112 jumped ship from Bad Boy to Def Jam. Not to be outdone, Combs filed an injunction against the label and announced that he would executive produce Brown’s album. The two resolved the dispute out of court by agreeing to split the profits on both Brown and 112’s future releases and feature both label’s logos on the releases. It is not clear how Brown’s departure from Def Jam will effect that agreement.

Roy Jones Jr. Preparing New Album

WBA Heavyweight Boxing champ Roy Jones Jr. is finishing up recording his second album, Round Two, I’m Ready. The album will be released on Jones’ own Pensacola, Florida based Body Head Entertainment and will feature appearances from Pastor Troy and Lil Jon as well as production from platinum producer LT Hutton. "I want to develop talent right here in Pensacola," Jones said. "Our goal is to build Body Head [to compete] among the elite, independent record labels." Jones recently returned from a four day visit to Nairobi, Kenya, promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and education. The trip was sponsored by Africans Unite Against AIDS Globally. Jones met with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and visited local hospitals, public schools, slums and boxing facilities. Jones also served food to hungry citizens and treated enthusiastic fans to a live performance and showcase featuring artists from the Body Head label. Going to Africa was one of the most incredible experiences in my life," Jones continued. "Not only was I able to give help and hope to people who are really in need. But I was able to experience Africa. Going there, for me, was the start of a new beginning, it was like a new book in my life." Jones next scheduled bout in the ring will be November 8, against Antonio Tarver.

Big V’s Chicken Chain Stolen

Big V from platinum selling rap group Nappy Roots now shares more in common with Lil’ Kim than just their Atlantic Records recording home. On Wednesday, October 7th the elaborate chicken claw piece Big V can be spotted wearing around his neck turned up missing upon arrival in Indianapolis, Indiana, after Nappy Roots had flown in from Los Angeles, California. Southwest Airlines officials in Los Angeles asked him to check in the charm, citing that it could be used as a weapon. "It’s too sharp and too rigid I guess for me to have it on the plane, so they made me check it," Big V told AllHipHop.com. He discovered it was missing after examining his luggage upon arrival in Indianapolis. "As soon as the plane lands I get out to check my luggage to make sure…cause you know, motherf*ckers go through sh*t working at the airport. They human too, they might have habits or some sh*t. And this time my chain happened to be gone." The charm, which is made of white gold, combined with its accompanying chain, is worth in the neighborhood of $20,000. According to Southwest Airlines’ website, "unless excess value is declared and charges paid at the time of checkin, Southwest Airlines’ liability for lost, damaged or delayed baggage is limited to $2,500.00 per fare-paying customer." But, airlines officials were hesitant to claim responsibility. "Man, motherf*ckers talking about they ain’t responsible for lost jewelry. How the hell can that be when they make you check it? This is jewelry and you explain that when you check it in. You seen it and I seen it. If we don’t see, it then you responsible," added a frustrated Big V. To make matters worse, Big V didn’t have his expensive neckwear insured. "I filed a report at the airport and my lawyers are on it cause something got to be done. Other than that man I’ll take the bullet to the face and learn to get my s### insured. When you don’t do wrong sh*t, you don’t think of wrong sh*t coming back to you. You learn. I got one under construction now. I’m going to come back stronger than Scottie Pippen." When AllHipHop.com spoke with Big V, the Nappy Roots were in Pensacola, FL for a show that evening. In his own words, "the show must go on."

Jadakiss Signs On As Spokesman For New Cognac

Rapper Jadakiss has signed on to be spokesman for a new brand of cognac, Nyak (pronounced nigh-yak). The liquor, which spokespeople call "the first drink specifically for the hip hop generation," comes in a variety of sizes including a 50 ML cigar tube which was designed by the CEO of the company, Patrick Charpentier. Charpentier started the company in 2002 and with Jadakiss as the spokesman, the company is aiming for the urban market. "They just started a national campaign," a spokesperson told AllHipHop.com. "They have a whole street team that’s gonna put up posters, t-shirts, all of that. They are pushing it like it’s a hip-hop record. Barbershops, car washes and any place that people will be listening to hip-hop." In addition, an exclusive Nyak mixtape featuring Jadakiss and the D-Block crew, along with a tour is in the works.

The Bootleg of the Bootleg EP

Artist: Jean GraeTitle: The Bootleg of the Bootleg EPRating: 4 StarsReviewed by: Alvin aqua boogie Blanco Jean Grae will smack the average rapper with a lyrical two-piece and a biscuit (that’s slang for a smack down for all you squares reading this). The femme fatale has the rhyme chops to hang with the big boys like Jay and Nas. Word. Her debut full length, Attack of the Attacking Things was heralded by pencil pushing, keyboard tapping music critics and underground rap fans. Her new effort, The Bootleg of the Bootleg EP, (what is it with these double word titles?) is more of the same thought provoking and technically precise lyricism with even stronger beats. Thank you Jean. Before Jean was out of her teens she was a member of the heralded but now defunct underground group Natural Resource. No disrespect to the other members, Meat Pie and Ocean, but Jean, then known as What? What?, was the star of the trifecta. The same way Lauryn Hill initially stood out from her Fugees partners, Jean was the lyricist heads were checking for. On top of her skills with words, her production credits (as producer alias Run Run Shaw) were top shelf beat spirits as well. The album is kicked off by its lead single, the incendiary “Haters Anthem” where she spits one liners like, “I’m more necessary than violence on the Amistad,” over an intense four-note key loop that has it’s tension released by the chorus’ refrain, “F### you, f### you, f### you!” On “Chapter One: Destiny” she molds her lyrical clay into a vivid Bonnie minus the Clyde tale that would make Ghostface give her a pound. Meanwhile, relationships and friendships are expounded on over airy vocal snippets and sharp snares on “My Crew.” Nice collaborative assists are accepted from Cannibal Ox on “Swing Blade” and from Block McCloud and Pumpkinhead on “Code Red.” The problem with this disc is that being an EP, and only six songs deep at that, you can’t help but asking, “That’s it, that’s all?” Grae tries to make amends by tagging a “megamix” of freestyles and older material at the end of the album. Beginning the bonus cuts with a blistering freestyle over Jay-Z’s own hidden gem “Breathe Easy” is a nice touch. She hold her own over a few Jigga instrumentals including the “You Don’t Know Remix” where she sums up the reason for her relative obscurity: “Not a thug, not a drug seller, not a gun shooter, not a stripper sex symbol…or anything your used ta/Marketing nightmare, I don’t fit into categories/I just rap, make beats and s### and sleep all these stories/All I want is the voice, all the people need is a choice, if there’s no competition, then what is the f###### point?!” Two tracks from her neophyte emcee days with Natural Resource, “Negro League Baseball” and “Bum Deal,” will make rap historians grin. Maybe it’s the general public’s snail pace in checking for her that has frustrated Grae; and perhaps that frustration is why her lyrics are so venomous. It’s just a theory but if it makes her keep making superior hip-hop music (no need to addendum her being a chick, please refer to KRS, “A dope emcee is a emcee.”), then let’s hope she can keep finding s### to p### her off. Though, more overdue recognition will be welcomed and is sure to come.

Jigga, Diddy Interested In Basketball Team

According to reports, Roc-A-Fella CEO Jay-Z and Bad Boy’s head honcho P.Diddy have both expressed interest in buying New York’s Glens Falls Wild Cats basketball team. The U.S. Basketball League franchise is up for grabs for a cool $300,000. Realtors who are representing the team said that both moguls are seriously interested and have signed confidentiality agreements. The representatives said that Bad Boy was especially interested, because of a nonprofit organization that was created the company created to bring urban youth to the Glen Falls area. The team is expected to be sold in a matter of weeks.

Kanye West: The Producer That Could Pt. 2

AllHipHop.com: What about other artists that are considered wack for doing something different? No I.D. had an album that was considered wack and it wasn’t…. KW: No I.D. and I are cool but don’t compare us on albums. He taught me how to make beats…you gotta hear my album. When you hear it, you’ll think of Midnight Marauders and Pharcyde in the same breath. AllHipHop.com: Did you drop out of school because you were ahead of the education you were receiving? KW: I don’t know about that exactly, but that’s what some magazine printed. I had home schooling for a year and ever since then I’ve been a grade up and I graduated from high school a year early. AllHipHop.com: You have all your albums titled already? What are the other titles? KW: I used to have a very good vocabulary, but in rap there’s only three sentences you need to know. What time is the studio, where’s the check and…I forget cause those are the only two I use. AllHipHop.com: You didn’t tell me the name of your albums though… KW: Oh, the first album is the College Dropout, the next is Late Registration, the third one is Graduation and the fourth is what you get out of all those…..A Good Ass Job. AllHipHop.com: Beat biters! You ever get upset… KW: Yeah, but that was stupid of me cause my whole style is off of other people. I took Marley Marl’s drums…so how can I get mad at someone biting me? AllHipHop.com: What kind of equipment do you use? KW: I don’t give a f*ck about equipment, that’s equipment. I use it just how people in real life be trying to use me. They don’t have feelings. AllHipHop.com: So do people use you for beats or for money? KW: I can say this…I think life is about people using each other. Just don’t try to misuse and don’t allow people to misuse you. AllHipHop.com: Can you get in the club? I see some rappers who cant even get in the club and you obviously don’t have the attire of a rapper….. KW: There be times I can’t get in the club and there’s time I can, but can’t get my people in the club. So I don’t go in either way. I don’t really go to the club that often. I’m in the studio. These interviews be fun where I can talk how I really talk. I gotta get my jaw rebroken in a couple of weeks and I’m going on tour with Twista with a wire in my mouth. AllHipHop.com: Is it imperative that you go through some kind of crazy situation to promote your album? KW: Or just get a real crazy record…but like I told you before my songs are wack AllHipHop.com: Did that change your flow? KW: I rap real good through the wire I know that.

Kanye West: The Producer That Could Pt. 1

Renowned producer Kanye West is no stranger to the rap game. He knows rap lyrics very well, even appearing on 1999’s “What You Do To Me,” where he dumped a rhyme with the Infamous Syndicate (group consisting of Disturbing The Peace’s first lady Shawnna and now-Chicago DJ Teefa and). Not much to say about Kanye’s production and his talent as a producer, the works speak for themselves. After a near fatal accident that nearly took his life, Mr. West has bounced back and proved that adversity is something he can conquer. But why in the world does the super producer think his debut, College Dropout, is wack? The rapper/producer gives AllHipHop a lesson in double-talk. AllHipHop.com: Can you speak on the album and what exactly your fans and listeners going to get out of this album? KW: I mean just wack basically, just some bullsh*t! I tried my best. I focused on making it as wack as possible. A lot of hours went into it. Especially after the accident. I went in and recorded that wack ass song with my mouth wired shut. It had to be wack because the studio time for me to record it wasn’t even paid for. I had to say I was doing something else. I made the wack ass video with the performance shot in it. I just feel like its really wack because a lot of n*ggas rap about jerseys. What I’m doing is wack obviously because it hasn’t sold any records and it’s all based on record sales and your first week numbers. It’s not about whether or not people like the music and it catches on, it’s about how many spins you get. So you have to make a record that’s gonna get them spins. I haven’t got any spins so its wack. AllHipHop.com: Is there a lack of push? KW: I wouldn’t say that, I would say it’s just cause I’m wack. I just think it’s some wack sh*t, there’s not so many features on it and I’m a producer slash wack rapper. Put that on top of it, it’s like I’m swimming in wack juice. AllHipHop.com: You haven’t started to get some of the people you made beats for to lend a helping hand? KW: Nah, I heard this one rapper I was working on who was like…I’m wack, I’m wack, I’m wack, I’m wack, I’m wack! AllHipHop.com: What about maybe talking more about shooting people? KW: I don’t want to talk more about shooting people, I just want to be wack. I just want to talk about making it out of an accident and how I feel about that and my relationship with God. How I’m self conscious and how nobody will admit to that or how the temptations I have as a man, when really I should be pointing at myself instead of pointing at everybody else…basically I’m wack. AllHipHop.com: So how can we get rid of this wackness for you to get that push? KW: It’s like the people have to go and tell the labels…yo what he’s doing is not wack…..and I guess they haven’t done that yet cause it is wack, still today. Obvious everybody else is hot but I’m still wack. I’m sure after my album comes out, people might start saying that it’s not wack, but I’m not expecting people to say that, I’m expecting people to say that it’s wack. Once people say that, then I’ll be stupid enough to go out and find other wack sh*t to do. AllHipHop.com: We put you on a mixtape once……… KW: Don’t do that, don’t let them get into my rhymes or whatever. I just want to be wack. I said I don’t know what’s better, getting paid or getting laid. I just know when I’m getting one the other’s getting away. I said in an interview I don’t spit lines in convo’s and XXL gave me a "Negro Please." So what I’m saying must be wack. I said I’m not competing with producers, I’m competing with rappers. If I want to be a rapper it seems like just to me in my own wack mind, that’s what I should do, If I want to be a rapper. I want to mean something to the hip-hop community, but they gave me a "Negro Please" for that too so I guess that’s not what I should have been doing. I guess when I rap, I should try to fit into what ever style the artists are using and see how similar I can be to that. To try and be different and give my point of view to the world is wack, but I’m just cool being wack! AllHipHop.com: What about a boycott? Maybe we should boycott the magazines… KW: Nah I don’t want a boycott, I wouldn’t want anybody to lose money! AllHipHop.com: You losing money? KW: Nah I got a lot of money. I make a sh*t load of money, but not from rap though. I actually lose money trying to rap. If your wack and you try to rap of course your going to lose money…..put money to your wack ass video, your wack ass T-shirts, the wack ass logo you designed yourself, the concepts you came up with, your wack ass mixtapes? You’re gonna lose money, but hopefully it flips and it’s not wack anymore and you’ll make some of that money back. The greatest accomplishments of this year other than making beats for Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, working on Jigga’s album, 50 getting a beat and working with Dre, the greatest accomplishment is this artist from Germany gave me $10,000 to do a verse. I used to tell people "you’ll pay less right now, but you’ll see in a year from now you’ll have to pay more to get me to rap on it." Their like "whatever your wack" and now I charge more for a verse. Another stupid thing I did was I didn’t really go for any club […]

Tupac Shakur’s Hummer Back On Ebay

Tupac Shakur’s Hummer will once again be placed for sale on Ebay.com, after 95,000 people bid on the Hummer in August. Bidding reached $1,000,000, but the winner of the auction did not honor his bid, thus placing the Hummer back up for sale. "They weren’t serious about completing it," the owner of the Hummer told AllHipHop.com. "I offered it to the next bidder and they weren’t serious either, I don’t know why people bid and then not be serious about purchasing." The current owner of the souped up SUV won the vehicle from BET in a contest titled "Picture Me Rollin’." The near mint condition H1 Hummer has been in storage since Shakur was shot and killed in 1996 and has only 5,465 original miles. The vehicle also features a 6.5 Liter Turbo Diesel engine, 12 Disc Clarion CD Changer, GPS Navigation System, PA system with three different sirens, full motion spotlight, 12,000 lb. winch, diamond plate bumpers, and beige leather interior with burlwood trim. Also included in the auction are several personal items found in the Hummer, including an invitation for Tupac to a Labor Day Party at the Opium Den in Miami dated September 1 st, 1996, his hand towel, a cassette tape holder, and a hand-drawn map on a piece of cardboard. The owner said photos and official ownership papers are available to the lucky winner of the auction. Proceeds from the auction will go to an educational fund for the current owner’s two children. Bidding starts at $500,000 with no reserve and will end Thursday, November 20th.

Defense Attorney’s Seeking New Trial For C-Murder

Defense attorney’s for convicted rapper C-Murder will make a motion for a new trial in a matter of weeks, after the rapper was convicted of murdering a 16-year-old teen in a Jefferson Parish, Louisiana night club. The jury that convicted the rapper was called back into the court house to meet behind closed doors with the attorneys on both sides and Judge Martha Sassone. Attorney’s nor jurors are allowed to speak about the case because of a court imposed gag order. The move is unusual because after a conviction, jurors and attorneys are allowed to speak to reporters and attorneys. For some reason, Sassone has yet to lift the gag order pertaining to the case. Miller was unanimously convicted by the jury on September 30 of shooting 16-year-old Steve Thomas to death inside of Club Platinum. Miller is facing a mandatory life sentence.

Police On Heightened Alert For 50 Cent Concert

Police providing security to a 50 Cent concert tonight are on high alert in the U.K., fearing violence in the crowd may erupt during his concert at the Manchester Evening News Arena. According to sources, the reason for the heightened security is a drug war taking place in the surrounding area of south Manchester between the G#### and Doddington gangs. Police will search every patron of the concert for weapons and while they said the chance of violence erupting in the arena is slim, they are worried about violence outside of the arena. Police will be on patrol throughout the areas of known violence outside of the arena, while undercover police will mix with the crowd to prevent any violence inside of the sold out concert. In addition to the escalating tensions between the two gangs, gun violence in the U.K. has become a serious problem. Manchester has had issues with gang-related violence since the 1990’s. Last week when 50 arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport, authorities detained him and questioned the rapper for almost four hours. Officials wouldn’t clarify why he was questioned, but was granted entry into the U.K.

8 Million Stories

Artist: Soul PostionTitle: 8 Million Stories Rating: 2 1/2 StarsReviewed by: Jason Newman When Columbus, Ohio’s RJD2 released Dead Ringer, his first major label record, in July of last year, the album became an immediate critical success and had many instrumental hip-hop lovers putting him on par with the grand poobah of the genre: DJ Shadow. Drawing on similar-sounding rare funk and soul samples, Dead Ringer was in the same league as Shadow, but remained unique, both among songs and compared to other records. While mainly instrumental, the album was not without its guest emcees. Cleveland’s Blueprint, the emcee heard on Ringer’s “Final Frontier,” serves as the Guru to RJD2’s DJ Premier on 8,000,000 Stories. With his confrontational voice and long sentences, it’s not hard to see why Blueprint joined up with Atmosphere on the Godlovesugly tour. At times, Blueprint’s voice sounds eerily similar to Slug’s (or is it the other way around?), and with every head having some opinion on Slug, I’ll leave it up to you whether that’s a positive or negative when listening to Stories. Lyrically though, Blueprint mainly eschews talks of relationships, but manages to run the gamut of topics ranging from the shittiness of a 9-to-5 job (The less-than-cleverly titled “Fuckajob”) to the joys of temporarily escaping reality (“Just Think”) to social commentary. The latter, the lyrical standout track “Run,” is one of the more powerful ideas presented in hip-hop recently. Starting with the chorus of “Look before you leap, walk before you run/run from anything that threatens peaceful existence…We’ve been running from day one/Never even thought to ask why or what from?,” Blueprint goes on at length about the concept of running away from the negative, a thought often overshadowed by others who emphasize confrontation. His words sound emotional and heartfelt without coming off as cheesy. While social consciousness can be found all over the album, he balances the scales nicely by borrowing a page from the Book of Blackalicious, Verses A-Z (Check Gift of Gab’s nothing-short-of-brilliant “Alphabet Aerobics” on the 1999 A2G EP if you don’t get it). Using the same Primo-esque strings-dominated beat on three tracks, (“Candyland Part 1, 2 and 3”) the emcee reminisces about cartoons, grade school events and candy, respectively. Nothing that will redefine hip-hop, but they do serve as fun, “Ahhh, remember that s###?,” breaks between the more serious songs. Musically, the overwhelming, yet incredible, “Share This” should be given to every aspiring hip-hop producer. No, not to copy the sound and dilute the already watered-down state of hip-hop. But to show that with a little creativity, the beat and instrumentation can constantly switch up yet always sound hot. On a five-and-a-half minute song, virtually no two 8-bar sections are ever the same! How can you not respect that? Starting with a dark piano loop and stuttered drumbeat, the beat morphs into a minor symphony of Earth, Wind and Fire-sounding horns, harps and guitar samples, calming down to just bass and cymbal before ending on a skittered electronica beat. Oh, did I mention the bongo solo? And the synths?? And the…you get the idea. Sadly, “Share This” is the exception to the norm on beats. It’s not like the other beats are bad; fans of Dead Ringer will still enjoy the mix of horror movie-sounding organ, soul vocal and guitar funk samples and old-school funky drum beats heard on Stories. But knowing what RJD2 is capable of, you wish he took more chances as on “Share.” Overall, 8,000,000 Stories definitely has its high points on both the lyrical and musical front. But the whole is weaker than the sum of its parts. Blueprint’s style, while hot as one track of a diverse album, feels incongruous with RJD2’s style over the course of an entire record. It feels as if RJD2 and Blueprint had both worked separately on their respective parts for a while to make it nice, and while both succeeded individually, listeners will probably be drawn to one part or the other. Whether this is enough to make the album successful, only time will tell.
