Suge Knight Arrested

Suge Knight was arrested Monday for allegedly violating terms of his parole, a charge that Knight’s attorney has denied. The violations involve his alleged association with gang members. Authorities said they learned of the violations when they raided his office and home on November 14 in relation to several gang related homicides, the result of an on going beef between rival factions of L.A. blood gangs. "He hasn’t done anything but try to obey the law and work hard since his release,” attorney David Chesnoff told The Associated Press. "I’m hopeful that when this is all thoroughly analyzed that he’ll be permitted to be released.” Knight has been on probation since 1995. Knight allegedly pistol whipped producers George and Lynwood Stanley during an altercation. Knight was arrested after meeting with his parole officer. Knight has been free since August 2001, after serving 5 years for violation of probation on assault charges. On September 7, 1996, Knight was involved in the infamous altercation in the lobby of the MGM Grand. Knight assaulted Compton Crip Orlando Anderson, which many believe led to the murder of Tupac Shakur later that evening.

Cam’ron Strikes Platinum

Roc-A-Fella rapper Cam’ron’s Come Home With Me was certified platinum this week, by the Recording Industry Association Of America (RIAA). The album’s success has been fueled by two major singles, "Oh Boy," and "Hey Ma." Cam recently dropped a single and video for "Daydreaming," both receiving rotation on MTV and BET. "We felt Roc-A-Fella would be a better place," Cam told AllHipHop.com. "I recorded a third album on Epic and they said they didn’t hear any songs they liked and me and Dame were like “ya’ll are buggin.” So, I just became a problem to the point where they didn’t want to work with me anymore. I didn’t go to the studio, radio or nothing. I was a total a**hole. I made it so it was cheaper to get rid of me." Cam and his crew the Diplomats, which feature Freekey Zekey, Jimmy Jones and Juelz Santana, are working to drop their debut album Diplomatic Immunity March 4. The release will be the first on Cam’s Diplomat Records imprint. "I’ve got Juelz Santana and Jimmy Jones coming out," Cam continued. "Everybody wanted to sign [Juelz] but Rocafella came with the right paper. He was on my last album, SDE, too. Epic didn’t want to sign him so I’m sure they feel like sh*t." "Everything’s finally coming together," Cam’ron said. "Basically it makes me realize that I’ve been on the wrong team with the right music, so I’m just happy to have the right music be on the right team."

Feds Focus Investigation On Former Crack Dealer In Queens

According to the New York Daily News, a federal investigation over the past year investigating crime in the rap music business is focusing on a former crack kingpin from Queens, New York. Kenneth (Supreme) McGriff, who headed up a $10 million dollar a year crack operation in the 1980’s, is the central figure in the probe. McGriff, along with Lorenzo "Fat Cat" Nichols and Howard "Pappy" Mason, led the Supreme Team. The Team controlled the Baisley Park Houses in Queens, peddling an estimated 25,000 vials of crack a week. Mason is serving life in prison. He was convicted of ordering the 1988 murder of police officer Edward Byrne. Four members of the drug gang shot the 22 year old rookie, who was guarding the home of a citizen who complained about the drug gang’s open air market. David McClary pumped 5 bullets into Byrne’s head. All four drug dealers involved in the murder were apprehended and convicted. Nichols turned informer when he was sent to prison for murder and racketeering. He entered the witness protection program. "We were very aggressive with them — including arresting both of their mothers," Federal task force head Leslie Caldwell Caldwell told the Houston Chronicle, adding that the mothers were "intimately involved in their drug operations." Caldwell is now heading up the investigation into the collapse of Enron. McGriff was hit with drug and weapons charges by the city’s special narcotics prosecutor in 1985. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years to life. Due to a technicality with the search warrant, McGriff only served 22 months in prison before his case was thrown out. McGriff is about to serve 5 years for a July 2001 weapons charge. "He became a player in the hip hop entertainment industry after he got out of prison," a law enforcement source told the Daily News. McGriff is listed in the credits of the movie, "Crime Partners 2000," starring Ja Rule, Snoop Dogg and Ice T. He is described as co-author of the screenplay and executive producer of the DVD only release. Ja Rule thanks "Preme" in the shout out’s on his latest album, The Last Temptation. "My n#### Preme you said it ‘we will not die until history records our greatness,’ the notes read. 50 Cent also pays homage to Preme on his song "Ghetto Qua’Ran," which names the main players of the Queen’s crack scene in the 1980’s. "Yo, when you hear talk of the south side, you hear talk of the Team / See n*ggas feared Prince and respected ‘Preme… When 50 mentions Prince, he is referring to Gerald "Prince" Miller, who took over as leader of the 200 strong Supreme Team. Miller was known for his violence and is now serving a life in federal prison. On "Look Who’s Back," 50 also asks, "50 who shot ya?/You think it was Preme, Freeze or Tah Tah?" Nas also pays homage to the Supreme Team on his debut album Illmatic. "Hung around the older crews while they sling smack to dingbats/ They spoke of Fat Cat, that n####’s name made bell rings/Black Some fiends scream, about Supreme Team, a Jamaica Queens thing.."

DJ Shadow was responsible for editing together the soundtrack of the film, and also composed the theme. Brian Cross (B+), a Los Angeles-based photographer, and author of "It’s Not About A Salary: Rap, Race and Resistance in Los Angeles," organized the project with backing from Tokion magazine. "There hasn’t been the right space for this dialogue," Cross told AllHipHop.com. "Where DJ’s and drummers can actually interact and not just play on top of each other. The film explains the possibility and creates the chance to have a live performance. The intention is to do a series with hip-hop producers and the musicians who influence them." MC Hammer Starring In New Reality Show

MC Hammer will star in a new WB Network television series, "The Surreal Life." The series puts fallen stars back into the spotlight as they share the former mansion of Country music legend Glen Campbell in San Fernando Valley, California, for ten days and nights. The show will cram seven stars from every genre of the entertainment industry including rap, heavy metal, movies, sitcom, drama and reality television, into one household. Emmanuel Lewis, Brande Roderick, Corey Feldman, Gabrielle Carteris, Vince Neil, and Jerri Manthey all join Hammer as they share bedrooms, bathrooms, go grocery shopping, do household chores and prepare their own meals. "The Surreal Life was a project we jumped at as soon as we heard the concept.," WB President Jordan Levin said in a statement. "The only thing that remained was to see if the cast participated in the spirit that was intended, and they did not disappoint." The stars have no transportation, cell phones or personal assistants and according to the WB Network, the cameras never stop rolling, capturing power struggles and personality clashes. The group goes on a camping trip, indulge in "Naked Sushi" night, a softball game, a backyard talent show and attend Corey Feldman’s Hollywood style wedding. "Picture Emmanuel Lewis and MC Hammer sharing bunk beds," Survivor II star Jerri Manthey told TV Guide Online. "MC Hammer was on top!"

Lil Kim And Russell Simmons Challenged Due To Magazine Cover

Lil Kim and Russell Simmons are being challenged by the National Director of Project Islamic H.O.P.E., Najee Ali, for the December/January 2003 cover of Simmons’ One World Magazine. The cover features Lil Kim wearing a Maroon burka-like head piece, the traditional head covering for Muslim women. “That this magazine ran with Lil Kim on the cover like this, is totally unacceptable” Ali told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “Russell Simmons has stood with Louis Farrakhan and had him host Hip Hop Meetings for peace. Does he want to build bridges with the men of Islam, but disrespect the women? I don’t think so. It is part of every Muslim man’s duty to defend the integrity of the women in our community. They need to apologize immediately, as there is no justification for this whatsoever.” Kim is also quoted as saying "F*ck Afghanistan," by photographer Alexei Hay in the issue. Kim is gearing up to release her latest album, Hollyhood.

Loud Record’s Founder Launches New Label

Loud Records founder Steve Rifkind inked a deal with Universal Records Wednesday Dec. 18 and will officially launch SRC Records. "It’s a joint venture with Universal," Rifkind told AllHipHop.com. We are gonna keep it grimy and to the street. The formula for the label is not the far from Loud. " The label has signed rappers Ricochet from Detroit, Michigan and Grand Daddy Souf from Orlando, Florida. Grand Daddy Souf has moved over 30,000 units independently, Rifkind said. The label will have offices in the Universal building in New York and will open the doors January 6. Rifkind, who also heads up the influential marketing company also named SRC, said that he hopes to duplicate Loud’s impressive success, but with a smaller, more concentrated focus. "We are not going to have as big of a staff at SRC Records as we did at Loud," Rifkind said. "I want to thank the fans and everyone that supported Loud the past ten years. I hope that we can have the same success we had with Loud." SRC’s first release will drop March 25. In related news, Rifkind announced earlier this year that he would launch a cable television hip-hop lifestyle channel. The channel will focus on underground hip-hop music and urban entertainment that cannot be found on other cable channels.

Queen Latifah is in talks to star in "F*ckin A," a new play by Topdog/Underdog playwright and Pulitzer Prize winner, Suzan-Lori Parks. The play is Park’s reworking of the classic "The Scarlet Letter." "I would love to do it, there’s nothing greater than doing a play," Latifah told industry trade Playbill. Fellow rapper Mos Def already has a lead role in the play, which starts performances Feb. 25, 2003 at the Public’s Anspacher Theater. "So I was like ‘For real, George, how much time would you need me?’ He said ‘Seven weeks, seven weeks.’ ‘Okay, how about rehearsals?’ ‘Okay, two months, two months. ‘So okay, you need me for three or four months of my life. I think I might be able to do that. As long as it’s juicy enough, let me get something juicy, I might do it.’" Latifah currently will star as Mama Morton in the upcoming film, "Chicago." The Broadway musical-turned movie received 8 Golden Globe nominations Thursday morning (Dec 19).

Puff To Open Sean John Store

Once again following in the footsteps of Russell Simmons, the ubiquitous Sean “P.Diddy” Combs has plans to open a Sean John retail store, much like Simmons own Phat Farm store located in New York City. Jeffrey Tweedy, executive vice president of the clothing line, told the New York Post on Wednesday that he and Diddy hope to have the store open by March or April of 2003. In addition to a New York location, Tweedy said plans are in place to discuss retail stores in several Malls across the nation. “Malls welcome new excitement,” he asserted. Though boutiques are usually opened with the aim of distinguishing brand recognition, Tweedy stated the purpose of the Sean John venture is to generate sales. By keeping the size of the store to “a certain square footage,” as Tweedy suggested, the business will be able to earn “decent sales per square foot.” For the past three years, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has nominated Combs for the prestigious Perry Ellis men’s wear award. The Sean John collection debuted in 2000 to rave reviews posting sales over $100 million.

Man Sentenced In Will Smith Identity Theft

A man who charged over $30,000 on various credit cards using rapper/actor Will Smith’s identity was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison. Carol Lomax, 42, of Duquesne, PA. pleaded guilty to one count of using unauthorized credit cards in September. Lomax illegally opened 14 accounts under the name Willard Smith, Smith’s full name. Lomax used his home address when he opened each account. Authorities found receipts and documents in Smith’s name, as well as a computer that Lomax used to search the internet with to find personal information on various celebrity figures. Lomax has been ordered to pay $64,076 in restitution. Lomax also made purchases in the name of another celebrity, not made to the public. In 1999 Lomax pulled the same scan in the name of Atlanta Hawks basketball star Steve Smith. Lomax was caught only after he racked up $81,000. In that case, a federal judge ordered Lomax to pay $81,000 back to American Express. He was also ordered to pay another $190,000 that he charged to other people’s cards. In related news, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have signed on with UPN to develop a sitcom based on their household. The will be fiction, not a reality show, and Smith and Pinkett will not star in the show. The power duo will also executive produce the show.

The show will be cross-promoted by MTV by airing music videos from the series on the MTV network. MTV will also rebroadcast each episode 8-10 days following the original broadcast on UPN. "Platinum taps into the growing popularity of the hip-hop culture with young adults, making it the perfect fit with UPN’s core 18-34-year-old audience," UPN Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff told AllHipHop.com in a statement "By forming this incredible partnership with MTV, which has helped bring hip-hop into the mainstream, we will be able to explore a whole array of different potential crossovers and tie-ins." The show centers around the two brothers who built their record label, Platinum from the bottom up. The series is set in New York. The show is a production of Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope Television and The Greenblatt Janollari Studio in association with CBS Productions.

Moby Ducks Eminem

Fearing he would “get stomped by Obie,” techno artist Moby chose to lodge at a different hotel once he found out his nemesis Eminem was filming a video in the same hotel in Los Angeles, according to a journal entry from his Web site. A noted pacifist, Moby was recently attacked outside of a nightclub in Boston by assailants who were alleged to be Slim Shady fans. Upon hearing that Em and company would be engaging in a party after the video shoot was over, Moby decided getting beat up by drunkards at 2 a.m. while taking a walk was not something he looked forward to. “In the interest of personal safety and what not,” he wrote. “I’ve moved hotels, just to be on the safe side.” The feud between Eminem and Moby began amidst the 2000 Grammy Awards, in which demonstrators protested the rapper being nominated for the coveted Album of The Year. During a press conference for the awards, Moby criticized the rapper for the misogyny and hate immersed in his lyrics.

Shure Introduces New Needle For DJ’s

Shure has released the Whitelabel, the latest addition to the Record Needlz family. The name refers to the pre-released or unauthorized records that crate-diggers treasure. The Whitelabel sonic signature features a solid drop bass, flat mids, and accented highs. The ergonomic industrial design features adjustable stylus overhang, reliable electrical contact, and improved stylus visibility. Whitelabel also features the high skip resistance and low record associated with Shure needles. Whitelabel is not a direct replacement for the M44-7 and according to company representatives, Whitelabel is optimized for sound and convenience. Whitelabel provides exceptionally good skip resistance, but may not meet the needs of extreme scratching and beat juggling. "Heads will turn," says Greg Needlz, Phonograph Product Manager. " Whitelabel combines 65 years of Shure audiophile technology with innovative features that meet the needs of today’s DJs and turntables." Shure Whitelabel Feature Specs: Industrial, ergonomic, and plays to the cartridge’s technological benefits of headshell mounted cartridges. Forward-Mass Design: Center of gravity is displaced closer to the cantilever for optimal performance. Forward-mass produces higher trackability, lower tone-arm resonance, better skip resistance and requires lower tracking forces. Adjustable overhang (50mm – 54mm): Unique to Shure products, adjustable overhang retains the forward and backward adjustment of a standard-mount headshell, providing maximum flexible adjustment between S-arm and straight-arm turntables. Electrical Contact: Engineered for optimized compatibility with most professional turntables, a rubber tension gasket and rounded gold plated pins limit possible damage caused by over-tightening cartridge to the tone-arm. Stylus Visibility: DJs can see exactly where they drop the needle. The Shure Whitelabel phono cartridge, retailing for ($175.00 MSRP), began shipping on November 12, 2002. For more information regarding Shure, visit www.needlz.com.

San Bernardino Officials Opposed To Hip-Hop Concert

Officials in San Bernardino county are opposed to "The Night Hip-Hop Stole Christmas," a concert that is to take place Saturday (Dec. 21) at the National Orange Show Events Center. "Some artists draw a criminal element,’ Mayor Judith Valles told the San Bernardino Sun. "I recognize that young people like (hip-hop) and young people need a place to listen to their music.’ The event, which may draw up to as many as 5,000 people, was to host a graffiti art battle during the concert and that also has the police concerned. "Unfortunately, taggers leave a trail when they come and when they go," Chief Garrett Zimmon added. Zimmons’ was concerned that the surrounding buildings in the area may be vandalized. The graffiti battles were dropped because of the expense of the murals, not because of city pressure organizer Peter Varady said. Varady publishes the L.A. based Subterranean Periodical. Varady said that he hoped to attract real artists and not taggers, saying there was a distinct difference between the two. Zimmons’ admitted that acts of violence at hip-hop concerts in San Bernardino were rare. Still, the Events Center is considering boosting security from one guard per 100 attendees to two. That would be in addition to the police presence. "When they think of hip-hop, they think of weed and fighting and the bad stuff," Varady said. "We promote positive hip-hop. We have a certain crowd, people who are intellectuals, people who go to (hear) spoken word and poetry."

Judge Considers Punitive Damages Against Master P

A Judge is considering a request by a 79 year old woman seeking punitive damages against Master P. Geneva Burger sued Master P in 1999, after a song appeared on a song about marijuana without her permission. The incident started when Burger’s phone conversation was taped by musician Johnny Lupo in 1997. Lupo asked her questions about marijuana use. Burger didn’t know she was being taped and the song appeared on the introduction to "No Limit,’ the 13th song on Magic’s 1998 album, Sky’s the Limit. Master P executive produced the album. P’s net worth came up frequently in the trial. Minto found that Master P admitted to having assets worth at least $200 million, including the $6.2 million that he earned this year from his success with his son Lil Romeo, who records for Universal. Master P’s lawyer, Donald Wilson Jr., disputed P’s worth, saying that Master P leads people to believe he is worth more than it actually is, so he can complete larger business deals. Snoop Dogg, who appears on the song with C-Murder, settled out of court for $75,000. Priority records also gave her $300,000 before the trial begin. Priority is also suing Master P., seeking to be reimbursed for the settlement.
