Outkast Snags Two Grammy Awards

Outkast beat out heavy competition at the 44th annual Grammy Awards last night. Despite going up against huge records by Jay-Z and Ja Rule, Outkast’s Stankonia took home the gold for Best Rap Album Of The Year. The group also snagged the gold for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. Lil Kim was elated as she held her first Grammy up to show off, as she walked around in a red leather biker outfit complete with a helmet. . “Everybody thought it was going to be non-stop catfights. But we were all really supportive of each other, and there’s a lot of talk about working together again. We get along like sisters, and I mean sisters who love each other.” "Lady Marmalade" snagged an award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Lil Kim was also hyped up to be working with Patti Labelle. "I was on the phone with my mother the whole time we were rehearsing – ‘Mom, guess what she’s wearing now?!” Kim said. Missy Elliot, who also shared the Grammy for "Lady Marmalade" also won a Grammy for her song, "Get Ur Freak On," which won an award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "I need to get back to the crib and get a shot of something to make sense of all this,” she said about winning two Grammy’s.

Roots Member Scratch Explain Vocal Scratching

Scratch, the member of the Philadelphia based Roots crew, is preparing to drop his solo debut, The Embodiment of Instrumentation. According to the human beatbox, or in his words, vocal percussionist, he is rooted in hip-hop’s past, but attempting to raise the art. Distinguishing himself from other vocalists, Scratch is best known for his ability to simulate a DJ scratching a record. “I got practically every sound that you could do with a record as far as it being scratched on a turntable,” he said. “From scratching words to scratching drums to scratching any sound imaginable.” According to Scratch, born Kyle Jones, his formative teen years were spent in Philly listening to shows like Power 99’s Street Beat on Sunday morning. There, he says, he heard the various styles of beatboxing from legends like Dougie Fresh, The Fat Boys’ Buffy and Biz Markie. In 1990, after honing his own beatboxing skills for several years, he met what would later become The Roots in, his current crew. When he became a member of The Roots, recording became a particularly odd issue because Scratch’s voice sounds so uncannily like real song that they had to be cleared legally for him to use them. Many of them were never cleared, ultimately due to issues related to publishing. Those issues never bothered Scratch, he said. “I’m cool with that,” he said. “When you see me, I want you to be like, ‘It’s like the boy had turntables on stage.’” Scratch said he aims to take beatboxing to the forefront, similar to Rahzel, another Roots affiliate. “I did my album because I am tired of the beatboxer always being on the sideline.” The Embodiment of Instrumentation features Jill Scott, Black Thought, Dice Raw, Malik B and a host of others.

Suge Knight Sued By Former Drug Dealers Wife

Lydia Harris has filed a lawsuit against Death Row Records [now called Tha Row] and several other co-conspirators, including lawyer David Kenner, stating that she was deprived her of early Death Row profits and publicly slandered throughout the music industry. Harris, who operates and owns Lifestyle Records, says she was a co-founder of Death Row, but Knight and David Kenner, her former attorney, altered the legal structure of the record label to exclude her completely. “I was cool with [Suge] and Kenner, but they identified my loyalty to Mike [Harris, her husband,] and tried to get rid of me,” Lydia Harris said. Harris is best known as the spouse of incarcerated Michael “Harry O” Harris, former drug dealer. According to Harry O, he provided $1.5 million dollars in start up capital for Death Row to launch. Harry O claims to have made up to $15 million selling illegal drugs. In 1991, Lydia Harris began working with Death Row as a 50 percent shareholder in a company called GFP Inc., (also known as Godfather Entertainment), which was the parent company to Death Row, according to Harris’ attorney. The lawsuit against Knight and the other alleged coconspirators says that he has called Harris several derogatory names since early 2001 on radio and in interviews. According to documents, Harris said her suit was “in order to restore my good name and reputation, which [Suge] has callously attacked in recent months.” Harris executive produced a recently released documentary film called “Welcome to Death Row” via Zenon Pictures. Michael “Harry O” Harris has been incarcerated since 1988 and is currently in Lancaster State Penitentiary in San Quentin, California.

Above The Law’s Total K’Oss Pleads Guilty

Above The Law group member Anthony Gregory Stewart, 32 and better known in rap as Total K-Oss, pleaded guilty Friday (February 22) to drug and child-endangerment charges. Stewart was arrested a year ago after Riverside, California police found rock cocaine in his Sport Utility Vehicle. He plead guilty to possessing rock cocaine for sale, transporting the drug and endangering his girlfriends two children. His girlfriend, Arnika Harris, 29, pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment. She entered a plea and will serve 120 days in jail on the weekends and her drug charges will be dismissed. K-Oss isn’t getting off so easy- he is facing nine years in prison when he is sentenced April 12th. Court transcripts gave the following account: Acting on an informant’s tip, Riverside police stopped Stewart’s sport utility vehicle in the area of Highway 91 and La Sierra Avenue on Feb. 15, 2001. Officers found about 3 ounces of rock cocaine in a plastic bag under the driver’s seat. Police then went to the defendants’ apartment in Corona, where they found 4.2 pounds of rock cocaine in a backpack, along with drug paraphernalia, cash and guns. Riverside police said the seizure was one of the department’s largest seizures. During the police search, Harris’ two young children were asleep in the apartment. The presence of guns and drugs resulted in the child-endangerment charges. Several gold records and recording equipment also were inside the apartment. Above The Law are one of the pioneers of West Coast rap, releasing their first classic album Living Like Hustlers on Ruthless Records, with all of the production done by Dr. Dre. The group recently signed to Suge Knight’s Tha Row records and are preparing to release their 5th album Diary of a Drug Dealer

Sista Souljah Sparks Controversy At University Of Memphis

Sister Souljah recently spoke at the University Of Memphis, where controversy raged on campus about her appearance. The problems started when Souljah’s visit was sponsored by the Black Student Associations Black History Month Committee. The president of The College Republican’s, sophomore Andrew McGarrity protested Souljah’s appearance, due to statements she made to the Washington Post in 1992. "If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?" she ten years ago. "It’s black history month and they’re trying to unify the campus. This seems to be in direct opposition to what they’re trying to do," McGarrity told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "This lady spouting off all these racial comments and anger or whatever the case may be, just seems to be working against themselves. As Americans, we all should be offended," McGarrity said in an interview Friday from Washington, where he is interning at the White House. Sista Souljah did make her appearance last Wednesday and responded to her critics. "Dishonest people are afraid to dialog,” Souljah said. During her lecture, she explained how growing up in the projects in New York helped her build her character. She also spoke on the importance of learning African philosophy and history. the importance of family relationships and criticized the penal institutions. Currently, Sista Souljah is the Executive Director of Daddy’s House Social Programs, which is a non profit organization for urban youth financed by Puffy.

Better Than The Original

The h######### nature of hip-hop. WTF? This is something that I have taken well over a year to come to terms with writing. Why, because gayness and homosexuality is met with such a negative force when it pertains to hip-hop music. Now, before we move along, understand, this has nothing to do with my viewpoints on homosexuality nor am trying to yank anybody out of the closet. Conversely, this is merely a discussion on the rather loud, yet unspoken h######### undertone of current hip-hop. While it has hit me several times in the razor sharp cutting edge lyrical legacy of rap, it all exploded when I finally took time to pay attention to Puffy’s “I Need a Girl.” In the song, he says, “you were more than my girl, we were like brothers…” (Or something to that effect.) Nevertheless, it struck a chord with me. I wondered if that really meant something else. I have had some down-ass chicks and damn-near been in love, BUT never could I liken one to my brother. But, by the same token, is brotherly love akin to homosexual love? I think not. But, brotherly love is far from the “love” I have for all my dimes out there either. To my knowledge, Puff ain’t gay, despite the crazy Wendy Williams-fueled rumors. I just saw him with a tall, luscious dime model chick at the Trump building in Manhattan. But that line has a definite homosexual suggestion to it. Puffy might seem like an easy target so me go against my own grain. Some of my favorites have said some things that just didn’t seem to sound right for a heterosexual male to say. For example, Redman – certainly in my top 5 emcees ever – once said, “Male groupies get shakey when I come up from the rear.” For me, I chalked (and still chalk) it up the zaniness of Redman, who is really all about b######, birds and chicks with nice toes. On Dare Iz a Darkside he also said, he’d allow an emcee’s mother to “suck his d**k from the back” and “put cornrows on his crack.” So, one line is fully heterosexual and the other is really strange. Alas, like Puff, Reggie is a straight arrow. On his Walking With A Panther CD, LL Cool J once said, he was so fly, “he could suck his own d**k.” Whoa. Now, I am assuming that LL was trying to say some real cocky (pardon the pun), arrogant s### but it just sounded…ghoulishly gayish. Even the late, great Notorious B.I.G. said, in “Me and My B####,” that his gurl was so fly, he’d “suck her Daddy’s d**k.” One of my faves, Big Daddy Kane, actually made me cry as a youth when he said, "There’s no hair on my chest, but I’m one tough cookie…who said you have to be 100% masculine in order to be in?" As Jay-Z said, “the answer was too dark for the user” so I declined to ask any questions. But, Kane was an infamous ladies’ man who had hit off every body from Madonna on down the long line. There were times when his choices in clothes were odd, but never did I question his manhood. That’s one of the gods of rap right there. But we all know that ladies love cool J and Big Poppa, right? There are a few other examples of shaky lyrics from heterosexual men, but you catch the drift. They aren’t gay, but honestly, if Redman, BDK, LL, or Puffy were to emerge out of the closet, I would be shocked, but I would still be checking for them as artists in one way or another. The videos in hip-hopalso seem to have some oddly h#########/ gayish activity going on. Now for example, if you have ever seen one of Tupac’s fun filled romp videos, you would see him having all sorts of fun with the sexy ladies. Now that was in the mid/ early 90’s, but thangs done changed more recently. Videos now are far more provocative than “I Get Around,” yet the guys seem to not notice the ass cheeks less and less. Not always, or course, because we saw Mystikal getting his grind on is “Shake Ya Ass” and, in “Oochie Wally,” Nas and the Bravehearts were all over the girls like wall-to-wall carpet. Nevertheless, a lot of rappers are all about the homiez. Perhaps, they want to seem cool and in control of their hoes in front of the camera. Well, maybe they gay? Nah, lets say gayish. Because, more often than not, they are hanging on some of their boys rappin’ about, “I’ll die for my n####, ride for my n####.” All the while, these chicks to kill for are on the sidelines, mere props in the testosterone party. In “Big Pimpin,’” when Jay-Z said, “Me give my heart to a women – Never,” I just never got it. In the context of the song, I guess it makes sense, but…he didn’t say – b####, ho, h#####, prostitute. He said women and rappers are always clear on the massive difference between a b####/ho/s### and a woman. And then, all jiggas aside, it’s just common for rap dudes, to just HATE (not hatin’ – loathing) chicks. Why? I don’t know, but I do know this, if you hate women, who you lovin’? Misogyny isn’t the same as being gay though, so most likely that’s all that is. Jay is my nuh though and you know this because I may be one of 10 in the continental US that thinks he won the battle with Nas. How did these gayish h######### undertones manifest in hip-hop? While some people think cats are just GAY (which they might), I think it’s a case of cats trying to hard – so hard they are inhumane. For example with Puff, it seems that dun feels the loyalty he has from his homies is stronger than a chick. And with Jay, you know […]

Manny Fresh Reveals His Secret To Production

Cash Money resident producer Mannie Fresh recently revealed to the Associated Press how he continues to create fresh new ideas for the stable of Cash Money artists. The secret to his formula he said, was returning to his block and simply watching the streets in New Orleans. "If you’ve got a block, just go to the hood for a little while and just sit around," he said. "You could sit out there for a day and you’ll see some things that you ain’t seen, and you’ve got a whole lot to write about. When I get there, I’ve just got to go back down to earth or whatever. Just go back to my old ‘hood. Chill for a little while or whatever." In related news, BG’s Chopper City Records, which is distributed by Cash Money is preparing to release BG’s younger brother, Hakim. Hakim’s debut album, titled Street Poetry will hit the stores later this year. Lil Wayne is also preparing to release his album, Block Burna in July.

Exclusive Update: Master P Saves Recording Studio

A lawyer for Master P contacted AllHipHop.com to state that Master P have saved his unfinished recording studio, after reaching an agreement to pay a Baton Rogue based construction company. The problems started when a judge refused to annul a $190,165 dollar judgment awarded to Charles Carter Construction, which was overseeing the construction of Master P’s $10 million dollar recording complex. The property was scheduled to be auctioned off at a sheriff’s sale on Wednesday February 20th by The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office. According to P’s lawyer, James Holliday, Master P’s company agreed to pay the construction company $137,000 to prevent the Sheriff’s sale. "It’s done-over with," Holliday told AllHipHop Wednesday. "Master P has invested several million dollars in this property, so it made no sense to lose it for this amount of money." When asked what P planned to do with the massive complex, his lawyer wasn’t exactly sure. In more positive news, Master P will visit a Baton Rogue elementary school and spread his wealth around. Earlier in the year P agreed to give 300 hundred children fresh one hundred dollar bills if they maintained honor roll status. P will be giving the money to the students next month.

Nas’ Baby’s Mama Steps Forward To Clear The Air

Just when it seemed that the controversy surrounding the dying Nas/Jay-Z feud was winding down, a new spark seemed to be lit. Instead of a record coming from Jay-Z or Nas, the record was allegedly recorded by none other than Nas’ baby’s mama, who goes by the name of Carmen. The song, "Carmen’s Got A Gun" was recorded as a response to Jay Z’s "Super Ugly." Apparently that was a hoax and the real Carmen has stepped forward to speak her mind. In a press release Carmen said the following: “I understand that there is a new song receiving airplay titled “Carmen’s Got a Gun”. While I can appreciate that someone felt the need to respond to this controversy on my behalf, I would like to state for the record that I am not a rapper and I did not record this song. I also do not own a gun nor am I supporter of violence. It becomes increasingly difficult for my daughter and I to have a personal life when individuals use my private life for their own benefit. And while I’m all for any woman taking a stand and making one listen to what they have to say, It is NOT appreciated when it’s done at mine or my daughter’s expense. That said, I would like to wish this new artist, whoever she may be, the best of luck. But again, she is Not me. I would also like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support that I have been receiving. Very soon, the world will hear what I have to say.” -The Real Carmen.

UGK Finishing 5th LP, Pimp C Locked Down

Texas rap vets UGK are finishing their 5th LP, “UGK V (Five).” Originally, UGK planned to release an LP titled “Riding Platinum,” but decided to wait until 1996’s “Riding Dirty” reaches platinum status. “‘Five’ is the definitive southern rap album – the culmination of 10 years spent rap hustling,” Bun B. said. UGK appeared on Jay-Z’s 1999 hit “Big Pimpin.” There is no release date on “UGK V,” and according to sources, one of the reasons is that Pimp C. is locked down for parole violations and must serve out the duration of his sentence, although the amount of time he must serve isn’t clear at press time. Bun B. is finishing up his third independent release with his group MDDLFNGZ (Middle Fingers). The group, which dropped two albums in 2001 is working on their latest effort, titled “No Apologies.” The album features Bun B., I.T., Sean Wee, Bad Ass Bam Young Lo and Big Mon. The album will drop through Perfecto Entertainment later this year.

Ice Cube Breaks Down Hollywood, Puts Music On Hold

In a recent interview with Filmcritic, rapper turned director/actor/producer Ice Cube said that he was putting music on the back burner for movies. Cube, who’s company Cubevision is preparing to release All About The Benjamin, broke down the Hollywood game. "In Hollywood, you can become a guy who’s just waiting for the phone to ring all the time. It’s never how I’ve done it, never how I’ve handled my career. I wanted to have a company that was dedicated to putting together things that I’m interested in. Not only on an acting level, but on a producer level… or whatever." Cube explained that his career hasn’t permitted him to focus on music lately. "Music, in a way, is on the back burner," he said. "Right now it’s easy because I ain’t doing no music. I’m just doing movies." All About The Benjamin’s is a comedy starring Ice Cube as a bounty hunter named Bucum Jackson. The plot centers around stolen diamonds and a lost lottery ticket worth millions.
