DMC Announces US Champ

The DMC (short for Disco Mix Club) has announced their U.S. Champion Saturday in front of a crowd of over 1,000 Hip-Hop heads. 20 year old DJ Craze from Miami won the championship, and he now has to go to Paris, where he will battle 30 DJs from all over the world for the world championship. Judges for the show were Grand Master Flash, Cash Money (the one-time world champ..do any of yall remember Cash Money and Marvelous?), and Grandwizard Theodore.

MC Lyte Back On The Scene

MC Lyte is back with a new video, and production help from Missy Elliott, and LL Cool J. LL produced a song on the album, called Play Girls Play. He not only produced the song, but he wrote Lyte’s Lyrics ( wack). Lyte’s album is going to be called Seven & Seven, and if the current commercial radio trend of playing anything with Missy on it, I am sure these will be another group of songs we will be sick of. Peeps down in the VA Beach area (PLO160!) told me that Missy had a convention of some sorts, and no one, including Missy showed. She had a celebrity basketball game, and the only celebs that were there were Magoo and his bodyguard!!

Play Attempts Suicide

On a sadder note for the Hip-Hop community, it was brought to ourattention that pioneering group member, Play, of Kid-n-Play recently attempted suicide. Apparently he was bitter over a divorce, and the way his career was going. Best known for his Raps, and his acting, play is also a fashion designer, and did the groups clothes. His latest endeavor was on a mixtape for Christian Rap label Grapetree Records. If you have seen any of the House Party’s (minus 3, that was wack, except for the appearance of TLC…ummmmm), or Class Act, you know that the brother has acting Skills. Kid-N-Play may seem corny now, but any of you old heads reading this remember how bumpin their s### was. It fit with the times. They truly opened doors for such acts as Puff Daddy, Mase, and Coolio to name a few.

Mack 10 And Fat Joe: Long Lost Brothers

Mack 10 and Fat Joe are the latest Hip-Hop heads to become actors in the newest straight to video flick (which is becoming the thang amongst Hip-Hoppers), Thicker Than Water, which is due out early next year. The shooting starts next week on location in LA. The story line is about two cats who don’t know they are brothers, meet up, and begin hustling people. The movie will be released by Hoo Bangin/Priority Films, and a soundtrack that will include tracks by Big Pun, Fat Joe and Mack 10 among others will be released with it. Other rappers to do the straight to video thing are of course, Master P, Jay-Z, upcoming s### from E-40, Mack 10, and a new one coming up from Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq.

Dirty Leaves Hospital

ODB left the hospital last week after being treated a superficial gun shot wound. Ol Dirty, one of the founders and member of The Wu-Tang Clan, was wounded Tuesday when two men barged into his girls apartment and shot him. The rapper, whose real name is Russell Jones, was in stable condition at Interfaith Medical Center’s intensive care unit, said hospital spokesman Lars Larmon. ODB walked into the hospital’s emergency department after the 5:30 p.m. shooting at the Brooklyn apartment, and left against the hospitals advice, whom wanted to keep him overnight to make sure everything was alright.

Rza Signs Deal With Red Ant

The RZA has signed an exclusive production and distribution agreement with Red Ant Records, to distribute the superstar producer/label CEO’s latest label. This one, Threat Records is co-owned with the RZA by manager/promoter Cath Jones. The first release off the label is the highly anticpated Sunz Of Man LP, The Last Shall Be The First.Red Ant Entertainment has signed an exclusive production and distribution agreement with Threat Records, the label formed in 1997 by Wu-Tang Clan member RZA and manager/concert promoter Cathy Jones. Add this to the entrepenuers holdings that include Wu-Tang Records, which is handled by Priority, Razor Sharp, which is handled by Epic, and numerous Wu-Wear stores, and Wu-Nails.

Eightball Debuts Strong

Eightball hit number 2 on the Billboard Rap charts last week, with his release Lost. The album is already certified Platinum (1,000,000 sold) and is a Triple CD. The release is on Tony Draper’s Suave House Records, based out of Houston Texas. Lost has guest appearances by Master P, Mystikal, Redman, Busta Rhymes and Too $hort. The next single from the album is My Homeboy’s Girlfriend, and it features Supermodel, Tyson Beckford, who loses his girl to Eightball (yeah right..haah).
