(AllHipHop News) Embattled Wikileaks CEO Julian Assange has gone Hip-Hop in a new viral video circulating on the Internet featuring him rapping. Assange drops rhymes in a cameo appearance on episode five of the popular Australian political satire “Rap News.” In the latest episode, titled “News World Order: War on Journalism.”The clip, which was recorded prior to Assange’s website Wikileaks released 250,000 classified cables sent from U.S. Embassies all across the world, has already garnered over 400,000 views. The Melbourne-based Rap News skits are produced by University researcher Giordano Nanni and English teacher Hugo Farrant. “He was full of creative ideas for how to act and time the entrance, and he really enjoyed lampooning his own image,” Farrant told the AFP. Meanwhile Assange faces serious charges. He was recently jailed for nine days in Britain and is fighting extradition from Britain to Sweden, where he is being accused of sexual misconduct with two Swedish women.
Shocking Moments of 2010 2010 was the year full of Twitter beef, “swag” overuse, “the dougie” taking the nation by storm and Kanye West escaping away to exile in Hawaii. Nicki reported record sales, Ricky Rozay got his gangster tested by the real “Freeway” Ricky Ross and Drake continued to shut it down as Wayne and T.I. served prison sentences. Eminem went triple platinum and Dre’s Detox still didn’t fully come out. Instead he gave us the headphones and the song “Kush”. Take a look at some of the most shocking moments in Hip Hop in 2010 as we take a look at the year in review. Guru Dying So many times we hear rumors that an artist has passed, has been shot, or is locked up from a gun charge, but most of the time it is expected or reasonable to believe given an individuals previous actions. But Guru’s passing was unexpected and unbelievable when the news came out. It rocked the Hip-Hop community to its core in April, especially with the alleged shady tactics of Solar in the wings. The whole drama kicked off with the shady initial letter to Guru’s fans, supposedly written by Guru himself. Then it came out that Solar wrote the letter, and was getting in between Guru and his family and friends in his last days and hours of the MC’s life, even refusing to let Premier see Guru. The whole thing smelled of foul play. From the F**K Solar campaign to Guru’s nephew speaking out about how Solar wouldn’t let the family see Guru, the end of Guru’s life was unfortunately marred in controversy. Initially to many, this was the end of the king of monotone, the end of carrying the torch in the underground for one of hip-hops legends. But then at a certain point as a community we began to listen to all the Jazzmatazz projects again, “Moment of Truth” , “Mass Appeal”, “You Know My Steez”, “Above the Clouds”, “Full Clip”, “Work” and so many others. Guru will always be a part of hip hop and its legacy and will never be forgotten. Its just unfortunate that Guru’s death was surrounded by so much controversy with Solar. RIP GURU. TI Going Back to Jail – First question with this is shocking moment is, why T.I.? While reportedly working with Remi Martin on a deal, building up the buzz with his Akoo Clothing line and gearing up to release his most recent project “No Mercy”, this was probably the worst time for him to get locked up. He had just been released from jail. While his damage control tactics are admirable, with charity events, TV programs about staying out of trouble and other projects to guide the youth in the right direction, its still upsetting to see the example set for young kids and the waste of talent. As T.I. sits in his jail cell for this 11 month sentence, it brings up the question of whether or not rappers should even be considered role models. Some maybe should be given that consideration, but with this arrest, its questionable if he should be a role model for the kids of our communities. Nas Dissing “LA” Reid In an email entitled, “Put My S### Out”, that leaked across the web, Nas put Antonio “L.A.” Reid on blast. The Queensbridge, rapper was supposed to drop a new CD, the sequel to his album, The Lost Tapes on Dec. 17 but for some unknown reason Def Jam Records “LA” Reid didn’t want to put the album out. Angry and never one to hold his tongue, Nas went in on Twitter, and shortly thereafter, the email leaked online. As Nas broke it down, its clear who he had in his cross-hairs. “The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You arent . not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didnt work out so you took a desk job,” Nas stated in an excerpt from the letter. Its rare that an employee goes in on the boss in that way, and even more rare that its taken up in a public forum. But hey, it leaked. Shyne Signs to Def Jam The last time we heard from Shyne, Diddy was dating J-Lo and the game was way different than it is today. Signed by “L.A.” Reid in Belize after his recent deportation, Shyne reportedly signed a deal worth between 1 and 5 million dollars and will receive distribution for his imprint Gangland Records. ‘It is an honor and a pleasure, not just for me but for Belize,” Shyne was quoted as saying around the time of the signing. According to Miss Info, Def Jam won a bidding war between Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and other labels, for the rights to release Shyne’s highly anticipated album, his first since 2004. Shyne later explained that, “L.A Reid was there when I was locked, a few feet away from death row and the Black Panthers. L.A. was on the visit floor on Rikers Island looking at me through them blinding bars, showing me he believed in that gang boy revolutionary music I make.” Shyne is also reportedly being managed by HipHopSince1978, the same company that manages the careers of Drake, Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne. Various Kooky Issues Ja Rule got a couple years in jail for a gun. Magnolia Shorty, a rapper once signed by Cash Money, was shot 26 times. DMX goes back to jail after testing positve for cocaine. Gucci arrested and released. Waka’s house raided and Gucci cuffed , by police. Charles Hamilton in a mental ward. At times, the news read like a police blotter and most times, we were shocked at the news.
In 2010, Rick Ross transcended. The heated beefs were in the rear view and the self-proclaimed Boss took on Sean Diddy Combs as his manager. Then there was the crazy Nike ‘Boom’ commercial with the ill new talking chain. Comedic skits with Chelsea Handler. A dope album in Teflon Don and a few collaborations later, Rick Ross was back on top. To put it short, Rick Ross became a brand in 2010. In homage of Rick Ross the brand, we assembled a few ways Mr. Rozay could potentially leverage his Hip-Hop identity to even greater heights. [Note: this is a satire, meant explicitly to be light and humorous fare.] RICK ROSS RESORTS Winter is here. Wouldn’t you love to get away? TEFLON DON POTS AND PANS John Gotti may not approve if he were alive. Since he isn’t, Rick Ross may be able to make this happen. ACE OF ROZAY A liqueur? Why not! BAWSE WEAR SUITS BY HUGO BAWSE A line for big men is mandatory. Bawse. BAWSE BBQ SAUCE When it is time to chow down on steak, accept no imitations. A1, please! Bawse Sauce!

Historically, beef and battling in as Hip-Hop as good ol fashioned apple pie is to America. But, will that continue as a new decade begins in 2011? Salt-N-Pepa did it. KRS-One did it. Roxanne Shante did it. 50 Cent did it. They all came up through the ranks of Hip-Hop, getting their true opportunity through battle/beef with another well-established entity in Hip-Hop. The rap battle is truly tied to Hip-Hop culture in a way that is unique and special. Ultimately, it is a sport. In fact, from the beginning, the artistic battle served as a tool of culture that prevented people from fighting and killing each other in real life. The metaphor soon changed as people were being slain via hammering metaphors and viscous bars. KRS-One once boasted, “I don’t battle to win or lose/ I battle to ruin your whole career.” And, that he did to a number of emcees. But, a curious thing has started to occur in recent history and the trend changed in 2010. Rapper’s stopped replying and began to ignore their competition, even those that had legitimacy in the rap space. Jay-Z has ignored The Game, Beanie Sigel, Peedi Crakk and even MC Hammer. He has barely made mention of them even though they all hold some serious weight in the game. He schooled Drake on “Light Up,” where he said other rappers were merely starting “silly rap feuds trying to distract you.” Even Nicki Minja subliminally dissed Lil Kim to death on songs like “Roman’s Revenge” with nary a mention of Kim’s name. And, now that Kim has returned fire with “Black Friday,” Nicki still has nary a mention. I suspect Sun Tzu would be proud. What is this new phenomena? Is lyrical battling dead or is this something a new? As rap has grown up a bit, it appears that the rappers have opted not to engage in the ways of old. Jay-Z is 41 now, Nicki Minaj is pushing her brand to a pop audience and frankly, cats just don’t want to give their haters a stage to stand on. So, it is highly unlikely that there will be any more 50 Cent’s birthed in our lifetimes. This new Jay-Z isn’t going to say, “I’m about a dollar, what the f**k is 50 Cent” to his millions of minions. He’ll certainly sublime them, but engage directly nah. Perhaps these backdoor wranglings are good for the game. Once upon a time, rap battles were a genuine clash of titans, not a vital point in somebody’s marketing plan. When Nas and Jay-Z’s beef came to the surface, there were soft jabs and subliminals in a number of songs before it bubbled over. KRS-One’s war against MC Shan and The Juice Crew was established in a real place, in a real time. Nowadays, every silly thing sets somebody off into a war of words and the public sees it as silly and juvenile. The Hip-Hop lover sees it as another act of immaturity from people that are probably too old and too established to be acting this way. Speaking of the Hip-Hop Lover, when was the last time there was a beef that actually had anything to do with Hip-Hop? You, know – lyrics. Rick Ross vs 50 Cent was entertaining, but the rap phase of the beef fizzled out after round one. After that, it went into a whole new level of debauchery and controversy with 50 throwing everything at Ross, but the kitchen sink. 50 vs Kanye was a war of sales. Jay-Z vs Beanie was so personal, it pained fans of Rocafella Records. And Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim would be so much better if the two simply collaborated on a record. And, then there are the underground beefs that nobody seems to care about too much. The point of this entire piece is to say that it is definitely time for unity. Sure, it sounds corny, but I believe this year has been a strong indication that this is the path that will lead us to the Hip-Hop Promise Land. UNITY! Its already here in many ways. Kanye working with Drake, who works with Jay-Z, who works with Nicki who works with Lil Wayne, who…just got out of jail. But, it isn’t limited to the commercial rappers. Look at Big K.R.I.T., Curren$y, Yelawolf and Wiz Khalifa. They are all working together in their own way, which has galvanized their base of fans without murdering each other’s career. Slaughterhouse is further proof of this. Joe Budden and Royce Da 5’9″ had a beef at one point and, in joining forces with Joell Ortiz and Crooked I, they got Eminem’s attention. Eminem and Royce, once best of friends, had one of the worst beefs. (At press time, that Slaughterhouse/Eminem deal had yet to be signed, but insiders swear it will happen.) Kanye, Camron and Jim Jones were at odds earlier this year, but they just got together on a Christmas song. Hopefully, the point is understood. I love where Hip-Hop is headed. Yes, I loved the Kanye West G.O.O.D. Friday series for its display of solidarity between the elite, all the while ushering new acts like CyHi Da Pryce in. 50 Cent won’t be linking back with The Game no matter how much the Compton rapper pleads, but he’s still shed a lot of his old angst towards cats like Kanye. Lloyd Banks wins in the end. I suspect even 50 knows that beef has run its course. Hes on everybodys songs these days. The Game certainly knows and, to be honest, he made some solid points in his effort to rejoin G-Unit. Truth is, a lot o acts have an even bigger battle ahead of them the battle for a career in music. Clique up and lets do it. Beef for the sake of beef is dead stinkin and rotten.
(AllHipHop News) Attempted murder charges have been reinstated against the managers of Hip-Hop label Trill Entertainment, home to rappers like Lil Boosie, Webbie and others. The Louisiana Supreme Court issued the ruling yesterday (December 22nd) in relation to the shooting of local rapper Bruce “Beelow” Moore in 2005. According to sources, Below was shot in the face at point blank range, for allegedly bootlegging artists on the Trill Entertainment label. Two managers of the imprint, which was founded by the late rapper Pimp C., are accused of shooting Below in front of his record store Shop Smart Music and Fashion on July 4th. Marcus Roach and Melvin Vernell Jr. have both been hit with attempted murder and armed robbery charges over the shooting. The pair were originally charged in September of 2005, but they were dismissed in 2006, because prosecutors waited too long to to try the men on the charges. Yesterday, a Baton Rouge court reversed the 2006 decision to dismiss the original charges against the men. We thought thats the way the court should rule,” said District Attorney Hillar Moore III, who is also leading the investigation into Lil Boosie, who is accused of 1st degree murder in a separate case. Both Vernell and Roach maintain their innocence in the shooting and have vowed to take the case to the Supreme Court.
