Review: Cee-Lo -“The Lady Killer”

Rating – 8/10 Whether he’s rapping with Goodie Mob, furthering his solo career, or blessing other artists with features (such as the recent cameo appearance on Rick Ross’ “Tears of Joy”), there’s no denying the fact that Cee-Lo Green has a great ear for making all types of music. Somehow, he manages to remain lyrically sound, musically catchy, and steadfastly true to his eclectic style without sacrificing any of those elements. With his first solo album since his 2004 release of Cee-lo Green… Is The Soul Machine, and not including the Gnarls Barkley experiment, his new album The Lady Killer is posed to make yet another memorable impression and effectively establish himself once again as one of the most diverse musicians out. The Lady Killer gives away the meaning of what the main topics of the album include, but it has moments where the true meaning of the songs are cleverly hidden inside double entendres. In the track “Wildflower”, Cee-Lo sings about finding himself a wildflower to take home in full bloom. He continues to make the witty comparisons through the verses and the hook, and it becomes subliminally clear that a “wildflower” is another name for a beautiful female. The same clever method is somewhat used in the very next track, “Bodies”, where he resorts to a more sinister way to recruit his next cooperative “murder victim.” The genius moments extend through the lyrics and construction of each song, and combined together with the way the album flows smoothly from each track, there’s not much here to dislike if you enjoy Cee-Lo’s eccentric style. The one thing that stands out about The Lady Killer above all else is its unique sound. If you’re big into the soulful, instrumental, Big Band sound, then the instruments here will sound familiar, although it’s constructed together in new ways. As stated earlier, Cee-Lo has a great ear for music, and the way he delivers his vocals for each track fits the production almost picture-perfect. Regardless if you like the R&B/Soul version of Cee-Lo or not, you cannot take away the fact that he has made one of the most complete albums to come out this year, and that The Lady Killer will appeal to more than just R&B fans. The old-school sound that resonates throughout the project mixed with the ingenious writing and song construction makes almost every song catchy and enjoyable to listen to making this yet another great album for Green.

ALLHIPHOP CONTESTS! AllHipHop.com had a contest for the new GLC single “My First Model” and guess what the winning design looked like? See below. A female named COITOY won! Maybe she can help me with my site. LOL! A SNITCH DID KAT STACKS IN. Did you know a snitch did it to Kat Stacks? I don’t mean screwed her, I mean, like…snitched on her. Yeah. That.   Rumor has it, Kat Stacks has found God in jail. LOL! Why is God always there in jail, but not there when you are turning tricks? KANYE WEST CHANGED HIS MIND…DOING THE TODAY SHOW! Good for, Kanye. I don’t know why this is good, but he’s changed his mind and now will perform on the “Today’s Show.” You really cannot pay for these press hits. JAY-Z ADDRESSES G.W. BUSH! No, Kanye should not have apologized to that dude Bush and Jay-Z agreed. “Like, all you saw on the news was black people on the news with help signs and all this stuff, and then you have this picture of the commander in chief, who we all rely on, just flying by,” the rapper continued. “It’s like, ‘What is that?’ If that had happened anywhere else besides New Orleans, would the response (have) been so slow? Would Bush (have) been on the ground? You have to ask these sort of questions. Just the fact that he thinks that the worst thing that happened to him is Kanye saying something about him. Like, what? That alone shows you where his mind is. Are you kidding me?” He said all of this at the New York Public Library event recently. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE NEW CONTROVERSY? Sheek Louch has an album coming out, but all the talk is about the album over, not the music. what do you think of this? RICK ROSS ADDRESSES YOUNG JEEZY Here is the quote, but you should listen: Yeah, he played himself. You gotta come cross the bridge to Carol City, Lil’ Haiti, that’s where you get your issues. I mean, Washington Ave? Give me a break…..what’s crazy about that, you can see on that same footage, when they asked about my name, they still don’t really have a direct answer. And that ain’t gangster at all. If you really have an issue put it on the table and handle it like a G. Walking down Collins Ave…You played yourself, you’ll get that took from you.” Just when I thought the beef was done this pops up. Shoutout to Miss Info WAS WENDY TRYING TO DISS? Now, I may be picking, but I peeped the interview of Wendy Williams and Nicki Minaj. Very early in and she said “The Monsters are all here!” Man, everybody knows that’s Lady Gaga’s thing for her fans! I don’t know. Peep it here. For Hip Hop News & Entertainment at DimeWars.Com NELLY IS STILL MAD. Nelly recently spoke to his local St. Louis paper and ranted about missing the spot on BET’s Top 10 Rappers of the Century. Here are some of the quotes: “It’s a weird feeling. For some reason, people want to overlook the things I’ve accomplished from 1999 to now.” “We busted our a####, just to have people overlook it and downplay it. After so much success in the beginning, they wait for you to not succeed.” “You can’t sit up there and tell us we didn’t stand up together for ‘Country Grammar. We got talent here. Don’t denounce the things we accomplished.” That show was like over a month ago, right? Its over. Source: The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ILLSEED’S QUICKIES I’m hearing that Nicki left Diddy again. But there was never any paperwork between them. Even Diddy said that. Not sure how she could leave. Playboy offered Rihanna the opportunity to pose nude. You know what she said. A girl emailed me and said that she was a long lost daughter of Michael Jackson with her version of proof. I’m too tired to add the images she sent. Maybe I will later. Why do people fall for Diddy’s antics? He called off his “wedding.” SMH. MORE NICKI PIX! Here are the pics from Nicki at Wendy. Jedi Mind Tricks Outrage Gays In Amsterdam

(AllHipHop News) Underground Hip-Hop group Jedi Mind Tricks are causing controversy in Amsterdam, as a large group of gay rights activists are planning to protest the group’s performance slated for tonight. Gay rights organization Centre for Culture and Leisure (COC) are planning to protest Jedi Mind Trick’s show, which is slated to take place at a venue named De Melkweg. Activists have scrutinized the group’s lyrics, which they say openly promotes violence against homosexuals. “In a city like Amsterdam, where we are cracking down on discrimination and homophobia, a statement must be made against this kind of music,” said the COC’s Amsterdam branch in a statement. “The so-called apologies made on Wednesday are the band’s apologies to the Melkweg for the commotion they caused. It was neither a gesture of goodwill towards the city of Amsterdam, nor to its many LGBT citizens.”The managers of De Melkweg have refused to cancel the show by Jedi Mind Tricks, stating the that the group was will within the “limits of free speech.””Another consideration is that some lyrics date from their early days and have not been sung by the band for years,” management for De Melkweg said in a statement. Activists will gather at the group’s show tonight to hand out rainbow posters and pink bracelets in protest of their appearance and performance. Jedi Mind Tricks are working on a new album titled Violence Begets Violence, which is due in stores in 2011 on Enemy Soil Records.

Travis Porter: Independence Is Bliss

Not afraid to be outside, inside, or on top of the box, Travis Porter has been representing Atlanta in a major way without a major deal. AllHipHop got a word with the hottest unsigned group on the radio, made up of members Quez, Strap, and Ali. Travis Porter has been stirring up commotion in The A for some time, and they caught up with us to talk about their latest single “Make It Rain,” and their upcoming mixtape.  The track just hit number 50 on the urban radio charts and debuted on the Billboard top 100 charts at number 97.In just over a year, Travis Porter has made longer strides as an independent trio than some signed acts. The young phenoms have taken the support from their 25 million Youtube views and strapped up, locked and loaded for the release of their video on MTV Jams and a tour in Germany.  MySpace’s #1 unsigned group is Proud 2 Be A Problem. See what really went down with Roscoe Dash on “Turnt Up,” and  take a closer look at where Travis Porter is planning to take Hip-Hop.VIDEOSTravis Porter – iM a DifFerEntER DVD [FULL LENGTH]Travis Porter | Myspace Music Videos AllHipHop.com: Tell us about your name, Travis Porter?Travis Porter: Travis Porter is our alter ego really. It’s like a lifestyle: Travis Porter doesn’t care about what anyone thinks, Travis just does whatever Travis wants to do. Really though we had come up with the name to be real marketable. We didn’t want a name just like any other Atlanta group… Dem Swag Boyz or sumn like that… you feel me? So it’s like when you say Travis Porter and you find out it’s three black guys, you start talking about it and telling other people about it. Really its a conversation piece.AllHipHop.com: The topic of conversation. How old were ya’ll when you got together? How’d this happen?Travis Porter: Well we’re all 20 except for Strap. Me (Quez) and Ali are stepbrothers so we met when we was young and our parents hooked up. We met Strap in middle school and we hooked up because we all was the different ones out of all the people we hung out wit. We been rappin since we was in middle school., and I used to make all the beats. Then Strap joined the group and it took off from there. AllHipHop.com: And from there has come exclusives with DJ Drama, performing on the Mo’ Nique Show, house mixes with DJ Paradime in Raleigh. How is the transition from being teens in Atlanta to being noticed in hip hop? What was it like to ditch school for the studio?Travis Porter: Really we’ve been ready for this. We grind it out each day and we made ourselves. No label made us, and money didn’t buy our way in the game.. We worked our way onto the scene so really none of this is a surprise. We’re grateful for the success we’ve had so far, but we got a long ways to go too. We had to make a decision after high school that this is what we were gonna drop everything for…and we gonna take it all the way to the top. Shoutout to all my old teachers who said I wasn’t gonna be sh*t… [Laughter]..AllHipHop.com: Most popular rappers have you beat with age, they’ve lived years of experience and thus bring a totally different vibe than Travis Porter. Some call you “hipsters”. What do you call yourselves?Travis Porter: We call ourselves “differenters”… we ain’t like these other folks out here. We’re different by the way we talk, by our actions, even our business decisions. We plan to lay the new foundation for how this music s### goes, everyone is already starting to follow our moves. Its like…..we do this, then everyone else starts doing it..AllHipHop.com: Is Travis Porter reppin a new kind of Hip-Hop?Travis Porter: Yea, we’re changing the game. Some say we’re the biggest independent act in the world, but all I know is that we have signed artists opening up for us at our shows.AllHipHop.com: Do you see yourselves as similar to an act Hip-Hop has had a glimpse of before? Where does Travis Porter fit in or stand out?Travis Porter: We are really ourselves. A lot of people say we’re kinda like The Beastie Boys and 2 Live Crew. We’re just out here creating and developing in the studio, making fun music. You know everyone else is out here tryna be tough all the time. We just wanna party and f### hoes. [Laughter].AllHipHop.com: The allure of the game. So there was the YouTube beef with Young Dro, there’s the Roscoe Dash situation that left you off of the hit “Turnt Up,” but everybody doesn’t know exactly how it went down. Roscoe originally had you on the song right? Clear the air!!Travis Porter: Shoutout to Young Dro… that’s patna dem. But with the Roscoe situation,  basically he came to us to do the song “All The Way Turnt Up“ with him. We did the song with him and put it on our mix-tape. The fans and the people thought it was our song because we had a bigger brand than ATL  (Roscoe’s name before he was Roscoe). The song started taking off and we pushed it all the way to radio. Then once the song took all the way off.… Roscoe took off… Lol. But that s### is old now. Everyone has moved on with their career. There’s enough room for everyone. AllHipHop.com: Politics. How is Travis Porter adjusting to the industry?Travis Porter: We aren’t. The industry is adjusting to us.. We coming in this b#### and shakin it up!AllHipHop.com: And is it everything you thought it would be?Travis Porter: Hell yea. We traveling the whole world, from Germany to Hawaii to Alaska, we all over the place. Girls screaming… but the best feeling was seeing ourselves on T.V.AllHipHop.com: So now you’re the biggest unsigned hype with Porter House Music. You hooked up […]

Internet Decides New Dr. Dre Single

[AllHipHop News] The internet forced Dr. Dre’s new single and the renown producer is running with the song “Kush” even though he’s not particularly fond of the tune’s marijuana-themed content. Dr. Dre recently told radio host Big Boy that he was going to continue to promote the song even though it wasn’t the preferred move. “It’s a little bit unfortunate with the technology today. [“Kush”] got leaked and it was a version of it that I really wasn’t happy about,” Dre. said, “[but] we’re going to go ahead and push it and put it out because everybody seems to like it. I just thought the content, it’s about weed smoking, and I don’t want people to think that that’s what my album is about. This is actually the only song with that type of content.” Dr. Dre, real name Andre Young, has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on the long awaited Detox album, which is 10 years in the making. As of right now he is aiming for a February 2011 release date. “I see the finish line right now,” he admitted. “I’m wrapping it up. I need about two or three more songs and then hopefully I’ll start the mixing process at the end of next month. And then from that point I’m about thirty-days out.” He explained, as he has in the past, the reasons for the lengthy delay on the highly anticipated project. He continued, “I’m seriously excited about it. It’s feeling good now. One of the reasons it was taking so long is because I felt like I was doing it more out of obligation as opposed to really feeling it. As of last year, I’ve been really feeling where it’s going and it feels good and I think I’m ready.” In the meantime Dr. Dre is working on other endeavors. He has a line of bestselling high-performance headphones entitled Beats by Dr. Dre. Additionally he has teamed up with the computer manufacturer HP to include the headphones with the sale of their laptops.

ChartWatch: Kid Cudi Sells! Cee-Lo Enters Award!

Chartwatch for November 17, 2010 I missed last week but not too much happened.  Sorry.  Did anything really happen?  Jay Electronica signed with Jay-Z and Diddy got his feelings hurt.  Chrisette Michele gave up on Hip Hop because she found out rappers were (newsflash) egotistic.  Hammer squashed the one-sided beef between him and Jay-Z which means Shawn Carter can finally breathe a sigh of relief.  (That was sarcasm….no need to inform me that Jay wasn’t scared in the comments.)  Oh, and Jay came out with a book, which means some fans out there are walking into a Barnes & Noble for the second time in two years (Since 48 Laws of Power by 50 Cent).  So I didn’t miss too much.  We do have some Hip H—Well, we have a couple of dudes that are talented rappers but have had much more success singing (more power to them) entering the charts this week. Kid Cudi enters the charts at number 3 with his second album Man on the Moon 2: Legend of Mr. Rager.  I guess that’s not bad for somebody that is on his second album and already talking about retiring.  This week the G.O.O.D Music artist moves 169,298 copies of his sophomore album. Cee Lo Green takes the number 9 spot with his third solo studio album, The Lady Killer.  The Goodie Mob MC enters the charts this week selling 41,000 copies.  Cee Lo is doing a lot of singing on this album but there’s a Goodie Mob album coming out soon for those that want to hear some rapping from the Atlanta MC. He is followed by Lil Wayne, who drops from 5 to 10, with his EP I Am Not A Human Being, but still manages to sell 34,868 copies.  So far the Young Money CEO has sold 446,000 copies. Eminem also takes a dip, falling from 7 to 11, with his seventh studio album, Recovery.  This week Em puts up 34,535 copies bringing his estimated totals to 2,971,000.  At the rate he’s going Eminem should hit 3X platinum within the next two weeks. Finally, Twista enters the charts at number 38 with his latest album, Perfect Strom.  The rapidfire wordsmith moves 14,939 copies of his eighth studio album. Dropping This Week I have been saying that a lot of Hip Hop albums are coming out in the upcoming weeks….but this week ain’t the week.  Kanye and Nicki drop next week and, hate it or love it, they will garner some sales in Hip Hop.  This week the only thing really dropping is Nelly.  Yeah…Nelly.  He drops his sixth studio album this week entitled 5.0.  The album features T.I., Birdman, DJ Khaled, Chris Brown, Plies, T-Pain, Akon, Kelly Rowland, Yo Gotti, and Keri Hilson.  Let’s be real….is anyone out there really looking for the Nelly album? Really?  Hey, I might be wrong.  He might put up some numbers next week, and if he does I’ll take my statement back…but c’mon son.  (And to those of you that feel bad for Nelly – don’t.  He sleeps in a big mansion on a pile of money next to Ashanti so he pretty much already won.) I’m sure most of you have already heard the Kanye and Nicki album but both will be here next week.  That’s the charts. www.twitter.com/drdougla
