ChartWatch: Bruno Mars Tops Charts! Eminem Stays In Top 10!

ChartWatch for the week of October 13, 2010 Welcome back to ChartWatch where we countdown the top 50 in Hip Hop and show you the new releases for the week.  We start things off with an R&B act by the name of Bruno Mars.  Normally I  don’t include R&B acts unless they crack the top ten and this week Mr. Mars’ debut album Doo-Wopps and Hooligans comes in at number three selling 55,083 copies.  Did you know that Bruno Mars was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and is the son of Sheila E and Michael DeLorenzo (of New York Undercover fame)?  Only one of those facts is true but I just want to see how far the internet takes it. First up in Hip Hop is Eminem with his seventh album, Recovery.  This week the album moves another 52,782 copies, bringing the Detroit rapper’s total to 2,784,006, and securing him the number four spot. He is followed by Waka Flocka Flame who enters the charts at number seven with his debut album Flockaveli.  The Atlanta MC sells 36,424 copies this week. Trey Songz stays in the top ten again this week, moving another 32,901 copies of his fourth studio album Passion, Pain & Pleasure.  This week he takes the number nine spot and so far the album has sold 381,433 copies. I’m going to include the next artist just because I can.  Faith Evan’s released her sixth album, Something About Faith, last week and she now takes the number 12 spot selling 25,119. Lil Wayne’s, I Am Not A Human Being, plunges from 2 to 17 this week selling 23,293 copies, but that should change because the physical copy of the album is being released in stores this week.  Do you think the actual copy will really boost sales?  I mean, do that many people really still buy actual cds?  We’ll see.  So far the Young Money rapper has sold 132,084 copies of the EP. John Legend and The Roots continue to move copies of their collaborative effort, Wake Up.  This week they come in at number 19 and sell 20,384 copies.  So far the album has sold 110,705. Gucci Mane also takes a drop from, 4 to 20, with his third studio release, The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted.  Gucci adds 20,142 to his sales bringing the total to 81,592. The late, great Pimp C enters the charts at number 25, selling 16,313 copies of the posthumous album The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones. Drake rises four spots to number 32 with his debut album Thank Me Later.  This week the Canadian MC sells 12,128 copies bringing the albums totals to 1,124,290. Lil Boosie takes the 37th spot with his latest album, Incarcerated.  The 10,294 copies sold by the Louisiana rapper this week brings his totals to 39,001. Rick Ross moves up a spot to 43 with his fourth album Teflon Don.  The Florida rapper sells 9,125 copies bringing his total 424,901. Finally, Ice Cube falls from 22 to 50 with his latest album I Am West.  The Westcoast MC moves 7,832 copies bringing his total to 29,268. Dropping This Week Not too much coming out this week but I do have a couple of albums from the Dipset and G.O.O.D Music camps. This isn’t a release from Kanye’s label but it does come from an artist that is heavily associated with the brands.  GLC releases his debut album Love, Life & Loyalty this week.  The album features Bun B Sir Mix-A-Lot, John Legend, Twista, Byrd Dre, Kanye West, T-Pain, BJ The Chicago Kid, Christian Rich, Manfred Mann, and Legendary Traxster.  Last, but not least, is Harlem’s own Vado who releases Slime Flu.  A few of the guest on the album are Griff, Jae Millz, and Cam’ron so fans of braggadocios Harlem Hip Hop should take a listen to this one. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill Sues Philly Police For $1 Million Over Harrassment

(AllHipHop News) Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, a Hip-Hop intellectual and associate college professor, has filed a $1 million dollar lawsuit against the Philadelphia police, claiming officers are harassing him.Dr. Hill, an Associate Professor at Columbia University at Teachers College, filed the lawsuit in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, claiming that two officers harassed him. Dr. Hill, who is currently a political contributor for Fox News Channel, regularly appears on programs such as The O’Reilly Factor, Huckabee, and Hannity in addition to being featured on other channels like CNN, MSNBC, and CourtTV. According to the lawsuit, the incident unfolded on June 17th in the city of Philadelphia, when Dr. Hill to produce his vehicle registration, to which Hill complied. After questioning why he was being stopped, Officer Decoatsworth allegedly yanked Hill out of the car by his arm, pushed his fist into his back and asked Hill if he “could afford” his vehicle. As this occurred, another unnamed officer searched through Hill’s vehicle without his consent. Officer DeCoatsworth then told Hill to “get out of this neighborhood and go home” and never charged the professor with a crime. Dr. Hill, who is a resident of Philadelphia, earned his P.H.D from the University of Pennsylvania. He claims the officers violated his First, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.”The Constitutional violations suffered by Plaintiff were the result of the City’s policies, procedures, customs and practices of allowing its officers to make stops without reasonable suspicion, and to use unreasonable and excessive force thereby violating the civil rights of those with whom they come into contact,” Hill’s lawyer Leonard K. Hill said in court papers.Dr. Marc Lamont-Hill recently made headlines when he responded to an editorial Slim Thug wrote about his opinion on relationships with black women, in Vibe Magazine. Dr. Hill has also been featured on television on a regular basis, where he has discussed a variety of topics, including Hip-Hop culture.He is seeking a trial by jury, suing the Philadelphia Police Department for at least $1 million dollars.

T.I. Explains Talking Down Suicidal Man

(AllHipHop News) Rap star T.I. explained what happened during an incident in which he helped prevent a 22-year-old man from jumping off a building in Downtown Atlanta yesterday (October 13th). In an interview with BET.com, T.I. stated that he was heading to his video shoot, when he turned on his radio and heard the breaking news about the man, who said he was “tired of living” and wanted to end it. “Something in my heart tells me to go down there. I’m thinking, ‘what can I do to help?’ The building is where V103 is at so I start calling people from the radio station who work there, Ryan Cameron, asking them to tell dude I want to talk to him. Everyone is like, ‘I don’t know if you can help,’” T.I. told BET.com. The rapper said he went to the scene of the incident and told police officers of his desire to help resolve the situation. Officers told the lead negotiator, who had T.I. record a video message to play the distraught man, to convince him that T.I. was really in the lobby and wanted to speak to him.”I was at the elevator to greet him. I spoke first,” T.I. said. “He was kind of, not distraught, but just looked tired. I asked what’s wrong and he shook his head. I said, ‘it’s never as bad as it seems and if you know me, know what I’ve been through, you know I know it.’”Ironically, tomorrow (October 15th), T.I.’s life could be substantially altered, when he stands in front of Judge Charles Pannell Jr., for violating the terms of his federal probation. The rapper and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested on September 1st in Los Angeles, after T.I. made an illegal U-turn on the Sunset Strip. When police searched the car’s occupants, they found T.I. and Tiny to be in possession of a controlled substance that turned out to be ecstasy. T.I. also failed a drug test the next day. According to reports, T.I. could be sentenced to up to 14 months in prison, for violating the terms of his probation for attempting to purchase machine guns and silencers before the BET Awards in October of 2007. The rapper, who served a year in prison for the crime, was released from federal custody in March. Despite these challenges, T.I. has vowed to keep in touch with the man until he gets better.
