The 39-year-old won the prize for his directorial debut “Get Out,” becoming the first black person to triumph in the category, and confessed to reporters backstage that he almost didn’t become a writer/director because there were so few African-American role models to inspire him. He hopes that young people watching at home will see his win and feel like they can achieve anything – just like he did when he saw Whoopi Goldberg pick up the Best Supporting Actress gong for Ghost in 1991. “When the nominations for this came out I had this amazing feeling of looking at the 12-year-old that had this burning in my guts for this type of validation, and I instantly realized that an award like this is much bigger than me,” he said. “This is about paying it forward to the young people who might not believe they could achieve the highest honor in whatever craft they want to push for. You’re not a failure if you don’t get this, but I almost didn’t do it because I didn’t believe there was a place for me.” He said he called Whoopi after receiving nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture to thank her for inspiring someone who doubted himself to feel like they could achieve the honor, and added, “I hope that this does the same and inspires more people to use their voices.” Peele added he feels proud to be a part of the achievements African-American filmmakers are making in Hollywood right now. “We had Spike (Lee), we had John Singleton (before)… but they felt like the exception to the rule,” he said. “I’m so proud to be part of a time, the beginning of a movement, where I feel like the best films in every genre are being brought to me by my fellow black directors. The two artists, in addition with Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Luol Deng, are part of a number of investors working with The Confluent Group CEO David Gross and Donahue Peebles, of real estate investment firm The Peebles Corporation, who are planning to take over ownership of the luxury Viceroy Santa Monica hotel. “The Viceroy is one of my favorite hotels in the Los Angeles area,” Gross shares in a statement. “It has an incredible location and an understated, cool vibe. “My partners and I are uniquely capable of repositioning the property as the luxury, boutique hotel with the most dynamic hospitality experience.” The Viceroy was put up for sale last August by owners at LaSalle Hotel Properties.

(AllHipHop News) Miami rapper Rick Ross is back home and recovering, after spending four days in the hospital. According to reports, Rick Ross left the hospital earlier this morning, after emergency crews were called to his home in Florida last Thursday morning, after an assistant found the rap boss breathing heavily and unresponsive. The “Purple Lamborghini” hitmaker fell ill overnight on Wednesday (February 28) and an aide called emergency services before dawn on Thursday, to report Ross couldn’t be roused, was struggling to breathe, and “slobbing out the mouth.” Davie Police Department insiders said they were called to aid first responders when the rapper became combative as he was being treated. It’s not clear if Rick was hospitalized – family members insist he wasn’t, but one source said the rap star was asked to make an appearance on Thursday night and pulled out after a representative told venue bosses he was in the hospital. This is the latest in a long line of medical emergencies for Ross – he suffered two seizures in October 2011 and was hospitalized, but later insisted exhaustion was to blame for the health scare and committed to change his diet and lifestyle. Ross subsequently lost over 100 pounds. The rapper has no doubt been considering his own mortality in recent weeks following the death of his manager, Nadrian ‘Black Bo’ James, in December.

The rapper, who alongside singer Andra Day appears on the original song from the movie Marshall, called out President Trump’s “hate” and the powerful gun lobby in a song from the 2017 biopic which urges people to take a stand. Common, real name Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr., dressed entirely in black, prefaced the song with an incendiary spoken word performance before giving way to the vocals of the Rise Up songstress. “These days we dance between love and hate,” he said. “A president that chose with hate, he don’t control our fate. The rap star marched into court in late February, and asked a judge to slap sanctions on Bryan “Birdman” Williams and his brother Ronald “Slim” Williams, the founder of the legendary label. According to new documents, Lil Wayne claims Cash Money is refusing to turn over valuable documents related to Nicki Minaj and Drake’s contracts. The two artists, who are arguably the best-known pop stars in the world, are signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Records. While Cash Money has produced 121,000 documents, Lil Wayne’s lawyers says those documents were from Universal records, which distributes the labels. According to a document obtained by TheBlast.com, Lil Wayne claims Cash Money has over $200 million dollars in cash flow, yet the label keeps “no accounting records, no general ledger, no bank account records and no tax returns at all.” “Unless Cash Money admits to criminal failure to file tax returns for 2011 to present, Cash Money must produce these returns.” Lil Wayne alleges Bryan “Birdman” Williams squandered nearly 70% of a $100 million advance intended to subsidize their Young Money/Cash Money venture.
