AHH Year In Review: Who Was King Of the East In ’09?

There’s one life/One love/So there can only be one king –Nas “The Message”   Last year, AllHipHop.com held the first annual Kings of Hip-Hop. The purpose of the 4 part series was to select an artist from each region (East, West, South, and Midwest) that made the most lasting impact in 2009. While other factors such as business-savvy and promotional campaigns were considered, above all the quality of the music was the deciding factor for each winner. Without further adieu, let’s kick off matters with the region the originated the art form we all love, the East.   Inaugural 2008 Winner-Nas   As in 2008, it was the veterans who remained at the mainstream forefront of East Coast Hip-Hop. Jay-Z, Nas, and 50 Cent kept their names buzzing throughout the year; sometimes for great reasons (Blueprint 3, Distant Relatives), and other times for issues beyond the music (Nas-Kelis Divorce, 50-Rick Ross beef).   Unlike last year, this region had strong, critically-acclaimed music being offered for those who were wise enough to turn off the radio. Artists like Skyzoo (The Salvation), Marco Polo and Torae (Double Barrel), Wale (Attention Deficit), and The Clipse (Til the Casket Drops) are just some of the acts that showed the East has the talent and music quality to compete with any other region.     Jay-Z After a lukewarm 2008 reception to the single “Jockin’ Jay-Z,” and worry amongst fans about the quality of Blueprint 3, Jay-Z delivered a solid effort with BP3’s September release.   The Roc-Nation lead-off album was one of the most anticipated projects of the year, and its #1 Billboard debut gave Jay his 11th #1 album, shattering the previous solo act record held by Elvis Presley. The album has spawned 5 charting singles, 2 of which in the top 3 (“Empire State of Mind,” “Run This Town”).   Award-wise, Jay cleaned up in 2009 at the American Music Awards (Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album), the BET Hip-Hop Music Awards (Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, MVP of the Year, and Hustler of the Year), and was named Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Artist of the Decade.   Outside the booth, the Brooklyn mogul kept in brand visible through smart marketing such as a taking Oprah to his old Marcy Projects stomping grounds, and performing “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys during the World Series. Additionally, Jay joined Will Smith in backing the $11 million dollar Broadway production on the life of Afro-Beat founder and music legend Fela Kuti.   Despite a trio of vocal detractors (The Game, 50 Cent, Beanie Sigel) throughout the year, Jay-Z chose to ignore the shots outside of a few interview comments.   In 2010, look for him to build the Roc-Nation around new protégé J Cole.   Standout Songs: “What We Talkin’ About,” “Thank You,” “Empire State of Mind”     50 Cent With Before I Self-Destruct being plagued by pushbacks, 50 Cent utilized beefs with Rick Ross and Jay-Z to keep his name afloat throughout 2009.   The Rick Ross battle, ignited by the Miami emcees barbs on “Mafia Music,” spiraled away from traditional diss tracks to cartoon clips, video stalking of DJ Khaled’s mother, and Ross’ son’s mother joining forces with 50.   In June and July, 50 returned to his mixtape stomping grounds with the well-received War Angel, and the 90’s R&B throwback project Forever King.   When the Ross feud’s luster began to wane by summer’s end, 50 turned attention to Jay-Z, prompted by the Brooklynite’s declaration that “no one was afraid of 50 Cent.” Recruiting Beanie Sigel, 50 turned heads by unleashing the former Roc enforcer on his former mentor (“I Go Off”).   The Queens native capped his year with the release of his fourth studio album, Before I Self-Destruct. Due to the combination of numerous pushbacks, a month early leak, and mixed reviews, the project yielded him his lowest opening week sales ever (160,000, #5 on Billboard). For the first time, the perceived flop opened up the G Unit mogul to ridicule in an area he previously dominated.   Still, with a memorable beef and successful extracurricular activities like the Robert Greene assisted book The 50th Law, 50 Cent remained a visible fixture throughout Hip-Hop in 2009.   Standout Songs: “Psycho,” “Death to My Enemies,” “Get the Message”     Joe Budden Internet antics aside, Joe Budden put together a strong ledger of music in 2009.   In January, the Jersey City lyricist’s mouth got him in trouble with another emcee, this time Saigon. The two impressed fans with a gradual but distinct increase in lyrical potency with their series of disses, most notable Budden’s “Pain In His Life” and Saigon’s “Pushing Buddens.” Unfortunately, a truce rendered an anticlimactic cease-fire before a clear winner emerged.   The encounter served Budden well in promoting February’s Padded Room album. Despite questionable production choices, the LP’s earned solid marks for the honest, raw emotion of tracks like “In My Sleep” and “I Couldn’t Help It.”   A few months later, Budden challenged Method Man’s skills under the guise of their placements on Vibe’s Greatest Emcees of All Time list. After a few instigative interviews, Budden’s mouth would have dire consequences when a Wu-Tang entourage member assaulted him during a Raekwon interrogation at a Rock the Bells concert.   That same month, Joe Budden put the focus back on music. He gave his devoted fans another full-length LP in Escape Route, and his integral participation in the critically acclaimed Slaughterhouse debut.   The embarrassing blog soap opera saga with ex Tahiry and assault at the hands of Raekwon can’t be ignored, but these incidents are not enough to overshadow the work Budden put in behind the mic.   For 2010, let’s hope they hope the talk of Internet will be quality of the forthcoming The Great Escape, and not Budden’s latest over the top video blog.   Standout Songs: “Pain In His Life,” “I Couldn’t Help It,” “Escape Route Intro”   […]

BREEDING GROUND Spotlight: T Will

Money Bounce Entertainment artist, Terrick Williams, has been making moves since picking up the mic in November of 2005. Opening up for major record artists such as Yo Gotti, Nikki Minaj and Gucci Mane, T-Will, has mastered his skills and talent on the level to one of an artist with a major recording deal. Producing and writing his own material while working in house with others on the label, the St. Louis rapped just dropped his first mix-tape and is currently working on ways to become a house hold name. Just wrapping up his first video shoot for his first single “Moolah”, T-Will took time out to sit with AllHipHop to set the record straight and let everyone know that he has his own style and sound; he is not to be compared to anyone except him! AllHipHop.com: So tell me about yourself, where are you from exactly? T-Will: Ohh, I’m from St. Louis. Born and raised in St. Louis. AllHipHop.com: Coming up, living in St. Louis, who influenced you musically? T-Will: People that influenced me were people like Run DMC, Kanye West. You know, I look up to a lot of those people. AllHipHop.com: Who would you say your sound is influenced by? Who do you sound like? T-Will: I mean, I have my own style. I don’t think I sound like anyone but myself. I don’t sound like nobody else. So you know, I feel like I am original. I am defiantly placed in a hip-hop category. AllHipHop.com: How long have you been rapping? T-Will: I’ve been rapping for three years and I’ve covered a lot of ground in the three years I’ve been rapping. I’ve done a lot of stuff and opened up for a lot of people such as Gucci Mane, Jada Kiss, Young LA, Soulja Boy, Spice 1, Twista, Mike Jones; a lot of people. AllHipHop.com: You recently dropped a mix-tape, what is the name of your current single you’re pushing? T-Will: I just dropped my mix-tape on December 6th called, “Follow the Arch”. The mix-tape party was a success; a lot of people came out for it to show love. The mix-tape can be found online for people to download. It’s not in stores or anything. The first single is “Moolah”; it’s featuring Shorty and La-Li. AllHipHop.com: You recently shot your first video for “Moolah”, tell me about that. Who directed it? T-Will: My video to my single “Moolah” was shot at The Venue night club in downtown St. Louis. The project was done by John at Focus Film where he brought all lights, camera, action and tour bus on the site. It was a long day of shooting, took 16 hours of hard work but was worth it, I received a lot of love and support from our local residents of St. Louis. AllHipHop.com: What are your plans for dropping an album? Will we see one in 2010? T-Will: Not really working on an album right now, I want to do a few more mix-tapes before I work on the album. AllHipHop.com: So you have a plan mapped out as far as what you’re trying to do? T-Will: Yes, I have a plan all mapped out. I’m working with artists that are on the label. I’m working with my in-house producer on some stuff, out of St. Louis. I’m not willing to work with anyone else – not just yet. I’m trying to build my name up. AllHipHop.com: Are you hitting the road anytime soon? Plans to hit other markets and get them familiar with you? T-Will: Yes. I do plan on doing that. Like I said, I have a lot of plans I’m trying to do. We’re going to do shows in Atlanta and New York and LA. They show me a lot of love out there. AllHipHop.com: How did you promote your mix-tape? What avenues did you use? T-Will: I used a street team, radio advertisement, Digiwaxx. We have a lot of people helping out. Digiwaxx has been very helpful to me. AllHipHop.com: 2010 coming up. What are some of your goals for the year as far as your project? T-Will: I just want to make sure I touch a lot of people that I haven’t touched yet. Make them feel my music. I want to share it with them. AllHipHop.com: Any closing remarks and/or anything you would like people to know about you? T-Will: Nothing personal but we’ve been grinding for a minute and we’ll see what the deal is. I mean, I’m good! I’m good! Like, I just want people to know that I’m different from a lot of rappers. I hate to be compared to other rappers. For real! AllHipHop.com: Thank you for you time! video platform video management video solutions free video player

Teddy Riley Accused Of Beating 18-Year-Old Daughter

TMZ.com reports that R&B/Hip-Hop producer Teddy Riley is accused of violently attacking one of his daughters during an altercation on December 23rd.   Riley, who has worked with artists like Kool Moe Dee, Heavy D. & The Boyz, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, Michael Jackson and Madonna, is also credited with creating the “New Jack Swing” style of music in the 1990’s.   He is accused of striking his 18-year-old daughter Taja Riley and her older sister in their Los Angeles home on December 23.   According to TMZ, a restraining order was filed and granted in Los Angeles Superior Court. Taja claims that the 43-year-old Blackstreet member abused her and her sister by “stomping, punching and bashing” them causing “contusions” and other injuries.   She claims that at one point during the altercation Teddy Riley lifted a Rock Band guitar and threatened to kill “someone” with it.   Teddy Riley has been ordered to stay 100 yards or away from Taja and he is due in court next in January in relation to the incident.

Skillz Chronicles Year With “2009 Rap Up”

Virginia emcee Skillz continued his annual tradition this week with the 2009 edition of his yearly “Rap Up.”   This year, Skillz had many events to cover, such as Michael Jackson’s sudden passing, the Nas-Kelis divorce, and the Rick Ross-50 Cent beef.   The rapper took aim at Chris Brown for his assault of Rihanna, but criticized both parties for how they handled the media fallout.   “Chris Brown, now that’s my guy/But how he do an interview/And all y’all notice was the bow tie?” Skillz rapped. “The media went hard/Chris you want us to forget just say what really happened in the car/Rihanna, she kept quiet/Until she had an album to sell but we still ain’t buy it.”   Skillz also teased Lil Mama for stage-crashing Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ MTV set, and Tiger Woods’ infidelity exposures.   “The idiot of the year is Tiger Woods/Can you say fail?/Who else is named Tiger/Why would you leave your name on the voicemail?,” he inquired. “And we was all shaking our heads at Lil Mama/Like, why was you on stage?/Nobody gave you a que/And with a head that big/You should have thought that through…”   In addition, Skillz recapped events this year from Drake, Lil Wayne, T.I., Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas-Perez Hilton, and Jay-Z.   The entire song can be heard below.

The NFL Wrap-Up Week 16: Dallas Vs Eagles! “Get Yo’ Hand Outta My Pocket!”

A wise man, ok, my boss, once told me to NEVER bet money on an NFL game. He continued on that I’d have an 85% chance of losing the bet. I scratched my head and he told me to stop thinking so hard; that there are far too many variables that go into betting “Straight-UP” or “Against the Spread” on any given game. Let’s just say that I didn’t listen. I couldn’t turn down the $40 bet at H###### that came from a total stranger. I’m not a punk! Long story short, over the years I probably helped a few strangers put their Halo playing youngsters through college before I gently pulled that cold hand out of my pocket. I am telling you this story because of NFL weekends like this past one. On Alicia Keys’ green Earth, can somebody please tell me what’s going on with the Saints and Vikings? Really, is this how we take an explosive season into the playoffs? Who lost money on ‘dem Saints? And is Adrian Peterson as talented as he is suspect? I don’t want to believe that dude isn’t elite. See, those were the type of games that I would’ve lost my watch over. On the other end of all that, the Chicago Bears and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed some grit, some promise. Carrying this performance over to next season, I can’t call it. The Indianapolis Colts finally joined the rest of the losers in the league. The New York Jets, yes, the same team that its own coach said their season was over a little over 2 weeks ago, rose to the occasion to beat a soon dejected squad. Did you see the sad mugs on those Colt faces? Didn’t you want to buy Peyton Manning a drink and tell him that everything would be ok? I don’t believe in teams that rest their players before a playoff run. To tell you the truth, I don’t believe that 2009 is almost over, well until I heard Skillz do the 2009 wrap-up. My suggestion to the Colts staff would be to, “Play to Win the Game,” in your regular season finale, or your season finale will come sooner than the Superbowl. And I just want to go on record saying that Indianapolis is one Manning injury away from becoming the Kansas City Chiefs. The only ‘Painter’ I believe in is Amanda Diva… shots fired!  The Playoff Picture has become even clearer this past weekend, especially in the NFC. The NFC has its six teams, New Orleans, Minnesota, Arizona, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Green Bay. New Orleans is a lock for the #1 seed after Minnesota sputtered last night. Every seed after is wide open. A team like the Philadelphia Eagles controls their own destiny. If they beat the Dallas Cowboys in their regular season finale, the Eagles could move up to the 3 seed and as high as the 2 seed. And the interesting part about this finale is that the Eagles, although the 4 seed at this time, hasn’t won the division yet. So we have our “AHH Game of the Week”. Dallas vs. Philadelphia, I feel a fight coming on; sorry Mayweather and Pacquiao.  In the AFC, only division champions are locked, Indianapolis, San Diego, New England and Cincinnati. Both Baltimore and the Jets are in control of their Wild Card destiny. A victory this coming weekend would clinch their Playoff position. A loss by either team would open up the flood gates to Denver, Houston, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville and Miami to slide into the picture. If your team is hanging on by a thread, what are their chances of grabbing up one of the final spots? As always, I can’t talk about every team in these wrap-ups. Once again, I appreciate all our loyal readers that follow this column. People are OWNING UP, every week. And it is clear that we have diehard fans being realistic about their squads and showing respect to different views. So if your team has already clinched their playoff spot, is there a team in your conference that you hope you don’t face in the playoffs; a team that you want to see in the playoffs? Giants fans, c’mon son, talk to us; y’all never should had called me out at the beginning of the season saying that I don’t cover your team. OWN UP, how did you feel about your teams’ showing in closing down Giants Stadium? In closing, I’ll never bet on an NFL game again. But there is something I know for sure… AllHipHop.com being the best site in 2010 for all of your information needs is something that you can bet on and win tenfold! Chicago 36, Minnesota 30 Atlanta 31, Buffalo 3 Houston 27, Miami 20 Green Bay 48, Seattle 10 Carolina 41, NY Giants 9 Pittsburgh 23, Baltimore 20 Tampa Bay 20, New Orleans 17 Cleveland 23, Oakland 9 Cincinnati 17, Kansas City 10 New England 35, Jacksonville 7 San Francisco 20, Detroit 6 Arizona 31, St. Louis 10 NY Jets 29, Indianapolis 15 Philadelphia 30, Denver 27 Dallas 17, Washington 0 San Diego 42, Tennessee 17

Rappers Homes and Creations Help Market Expensive Hotel

They may have engaged in friendly competition to promote their respective albums in 2007, but an established hotel is utilizing nonmusic-related possessions from Kanye West and 50 Cent to help market itself to wealthy clientele.   According to Bloomberg.com the Hollywood home of the G-Unit leader has been used to train staff members at the Cheval Blanc hotel in the French ski town of Courcheve.   The rooms cost $67,466.00 per-night.   The hotel, co-owned by LVMH Moet Hennessy and Belgian billionaire Albert Frere, is noted for its grand style and pricey array of services that include a Michelin three-star chef, bedtime chocolates delivered to your room aboard a gondola and “Hair Room Service” by famed barber John Nollet.   Rooms range from a basic single room with a maxibar full of Krug Champagne to a 650-square-meter duplex sky ranch to a master bedroom on a fifth-floor super suite that features a gym, private elevator, massage room, sauna, steam room, grand piano, Jacuzzi and a dressing room with eight closets and 84 drawers and shelves.   The home of 50 Cent is used by Cheval Blanc chief protocol officer Marie-Claude Metrot to prepare the hotel’s 115 staff members (or “players” as they’re called) to help bring the venue and its assets to life, while catering to their guests every need.   In her eyes, the ability for workers to fulfill the fantasies of guests is important in making a stay at the Cheval Blanc more of an experience than anything else.   “We deliver dreams,” Metrot said. “We don’t let guests think. We anticipate their desires.”   In addition to 50 Cent, Cheval Blanc has drawn support from Kanye West. The Chicago hitmaker created bronze teddy bears to display at the 34-room venue.   West and 50 Cent’s contributions to Cheval Blanc serve as a contrast to the competitive nature displayed by the rappers in 2007.   That year, 50 Cent’s Curtis album went head-to-head with West’s Graduation to see who could sell the most copies of their respective projects on September 11.   West ultimately won the battle, selling 957,000 copies of Graduation on its first week of release. The Curtis album, which included the hit “I Get Money,” came up short during the competition, with 691,000 copies sold in its first week.

2010 Hip – Hop Predictions and Beyond

Doesn’t it seem like every year there’s always a Best and Worst list to cap of every year end? Well, I couldn’t stand by and let these lists go on without adding my own list of “predictions” for the New Year. They say I’m a Drama Queen, but it’s not my fault I have the tendency to tell the truth and be a little extra heat with it. I guess you can say, I have the tendency to drop knowledge as well as expose some of the cancers in Hip-Hop. I’ve been making artists joyful or uncomfortable for a few years now, whether on radio, online or in my “hot seat” interviews. I’ll admit I’m a problem, but what’s new?  My family has been saying that for years.   So for the New Year, it looks like this problem will be around for a little bit longer as I align with a new different family. This Drama Queen, aka Ms. Drama, will join AllHipHop Radio in 2010. If you haven’t seen me in action, you should probably check out my site, http://www.msdramatv.com, to get a glimpse of my duplicity.
