KANYE JUST WANTS YOUR EAR THIS SUMMER!
With New York’s annual mega-festival, Governors Ball, kicking off today at Randall’s Island amidst the rain, AllHipHop.com has chosen 10 must-see acts to highlight for this weekend’s tens of thousands of concert-goers. Amidst the eclectic collection of artists like Kanye West, Guns N’ Roses, Kings of Leon, The XX and Nas that will be performing there are always some hidden gems that may not be on your radar. With that in mind, here are 8 acts that need to be seen and heard at this weekends festival: 8. The Knocks [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYkv2O1Wyuw&w=560&h=315] The Knocks ARE one of the hottest producing duos in music right now. B-Roc and J Patt have been wowing festival audiences for several years and as they’re brand and fanbase continues to grow, what better way to get introduced to the future of electronic dance music then seeing them live? Where: Friday 6/7 – Skyy Vodka Tent @ 2:15 [Follow The Knocks on Twitter: @TheKnocks] 7. Azealia Banks [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdCGptVzqVU&w=560&h=315] Amidst the never-ending beefs and feuds that Ms. Banks seems to find herself a part of, the 22 year-old Harlem native is known best for her energetic performances at festivals ranging from Coachella to Bonnaroo to this weekends Governors Ball. With her debut studio album, Broke With Expensive Taste, set to drop later this summer, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to decide whether or not you buy into the “hype” and more importantly the girl herself. Where: Saturday 6/8 – Skyy Vodka Tent @ 5:45 [Follow Azealia Banks on Twitter: @AzealiaBanks] 6. Freddie Gibbs [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qgtQBXTI0s&w=560&h=315] Since parting ways with Young Jeezy’s CTE imprint last year, Señor Gibbs has ramped up his musical offerings in the form of his critically-acclamied mixtape, Baby Face Killa, countless songs and numerous guest appearances. With Gibbs’ next release, ESGN, set to drop on July 9th, this weekend will be a good gauge for the level of interest that New York fans have for the Indiana-native in the years to come. Where: Sunday 6/9 – Skyy Vodka Tent @ 2:15 [Follow Freddie Gibbs on Twitter: @FreddieGibbs] 5. Erykah Badu and the Cannabinoids [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hVp47f5YZg&w=560&h=315] The 4-time Grammy Award-winning singer will be gracing one of the four stages at this weekend’s festival backed by her very unique group The Cannabinoids. This is not the R&B-centric set that you’re probably expecting since Erykah and her band go for a more experimentative angle during their performances but no question this will not be a set that you want to miss! Where: Friday 6/7 – Skyy Vodka Tent @ 8:00 [Follow Erykah Badu on Twitter: @FatBellyBella] 4. Kendrick Lamar [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF8aaTu2kg0&w=560&h=315] Name a festival this summer that Kendrick isn’t a part of. Seriously give it a shot because the kid from Compton has leveled up from being one of the most applauded up-and-coming rappers to THE biggest new name in music. Following a short yet historic set at last weekends Hot 97 Summer Jam, fans can look forward to seeing a complete hour-long performance from the games hottest MC right now with plenty of surprises in-store. And although we don’t expect Papoose to crash two Kendrick sets in a 7-day span, it is New York City, so you never know what to expect. Where: Saturday 6/8 – Honda Stage @ 6:45 [Follow Kendrick Lamar on Twitter: @KendrickLamar] 3. Gary Clark Jr. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFjMeOnqAPI&w=560&h=315] There’s a reason that everyone from Jay-Z to The Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton and beyond have called Gary Clark Jr. “the future of music.” After sweeping the Austin Music Awards recently and releasing one of the years most praised albums in the form of Blak and Blu, Gary is a talent and act that needs to be witnessed to be believed. Whether you’re a fan of Hip-Hop or Rock or Jazz or whatever your taste may be, there is no doubt that Gary Clark Jr. has something to offer listeners no matter what they’re initial judgement of him is. The man who has done such historic things as bring out Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, AZ, DJ Premier and Pete Rock at past NYC events will no doubt have all eyes on him to see what exactly he has up his sleeve this time. With a catalog of classics that will make the island shake, there is no doubt that life is still good for the Queensbridge native and Hip-Hop icon. Where: Saturday 6/8 – Honda Stage @ 9:30 [Follow Nas on Twitter: @Nas] 1. Kanye West [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuhl6Ji5zHM&w=560&h=315] What really needs to be said that hasn’t been said before? It’s Kanye West, performing live, on his birthday of all times, in New York City. Oh and in case you’ve been living under a rock, one of the biggest entertainers in music will be dropping his highly-anticipated new album, Yeezus, in two weeks. Could we be getting the best preview to date of his new material? I say yes! It’s official ladies and gentlemen, DJ JayCeeOh is SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX! The champ battled his way past 18 other DJ’s over the course of 10 challenges this season and outlasted, outworked and out-DJed the competition as he fought for the grand prize of $250,000, becoming an official Smirnoff DJ and being crowned the Master of the Mix. After a finale that saw JayCeeOh go up against his close friends and the show’s finalists, Incrediboi and DJ Chris Karns, the opportunities for the future have opened up. JayCeeOh’s work schedule is quite crazy as the Pittsburgh native finishes up work on the next installment of his “Super 7” series, prepares to release a mixtape, and continues crafting original production for the masses. Check out our exclusive interview with the Master of the Mix himself, DJ JayCeeOh, where he speaks on keeping the win a secret, the show’s hardest challenge, putting Wiz Khalifa on his first mixtape and much more below: The man of the hour! Congratulations on the win, how does it feel? DJ JayCeeOh: F*cking amazing! As someone who has been tracking your progress throughout the season I have to ask how long ago the show actually wrapped and how you kept such a big secret to yourself the whole time? DJ JayCeeOh: It was pretty much impossible. I knew by the end of January, like January 25th is when I found out. Even though you were touring, was it difficult to be more lowkey and out of the scene while you waited for the season to play out? DJ JayCeeOh: Yeah I would definitely try and be systematic about where I was and making sure I wasn’t every at once. When people would ask me questions about the show and other contestants would comment on certain things, I wanted to stay out of the conversation cause I didn’t want to say something that would allude to my win. I was trying to just be careful. Would you say that the final challenge was the toughest for you? DJ JayCeeOh: The finale was the best one for me cause I got to do everything that I wanted to do. The “Bend the Ten” challenge was probably the hardest cause we had to do the ten songs from ten genres at ten different BPMs in four minutes and we only had a couple of hours to work on it. I love challenges like that but having to do that in such a short period of time was really tough. I know from watching that Incrediboi, [DJ Chris Karns] and yourself were really supportive of each other during the show. How have those relationships grown since you guys wrapped? DJ JayCeeOh: It’s gotten even better man. We’ve all kept in touch and I actually threw a finale party in L.A. and they both stayed at my house. I feel like we’re a family now. That whole experience was just so crazy to go through together and we all have a lot of love for each other. The two of them can still hold their heads high. It’s not an injustice where they got jerked and were beat by some bum. They both respect me a lot and I feel like I deserved to win. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3K0vo5LkPg0&w=560&h=315] I saw on your Twitter that you were doing an interview at Power 105.1 with Kid Capri yesterday. How is it having him as more of a mentor and companion now than a judge? DJ JayCeeOh: It’s great man. When I started DJing I was watching him on Def Comedy Jam in awe of what he did so he’s been an icon and an idol that I looked up to my whole career as a DJ. Just having him walk around and vouch for me, that means a lot. Let me backtrack real quick. When we spoke last month you were touring with rapper Sam Adams. How did the rest of the tour go for you? DJ JayCeeOh: That tour was amazing man. We had a blast and I got to do like 15-20 minute sets before he came out in every city so I got to really show his fan base, which isn’t really like mine from the jump, what a real DJ does. A lot of these kids, especially his fans, have grown up in an age where they think Deadmau5 is a great DJ when they’re really just producers playing music. So when I play that kind of set or that kind of music the way I play it, they’re blown away and a lot of those kids after seeing me live say that JayCeeOh is there favorite DJ. It was really beneficial and just a great tour to be on. In addition to doing more remixes like the one you dropped last week for French Montana’s “What Happens Tonight” what are your plans as far as producing original stuff? Is that more of a focus for you now? DJ JayCeeOh: Yeah, honestly that’s my number one focus right now. Like every second that I’m not on tour, I’m working on production and that’s because I just proved to the world that I’m one of the best DJs around but I can’t stop there. The guys making the most money are the producing DJs so since I’ve gotten back from filming, all I’ve done is produce. I have a ton of records ready to come out, I’ve just been waiting for this win to happen and with all eyes on me now when I release something people are actually going to pay attention to it. I plan on releasing a lot of my own stuff, a lot of […]
And then there were three! The third season of SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX DJ competition aired its penultimate episode last night as the remaining DJs battle for a grand prize of $250,000. On this weeks episode, the remaining DJs which include JayCeeOh, Incrediboi, DJ Chris Karns and Loczi, were tasked with creating an original remix to Grammy Award-winning singer Estelle’s new single, “Do My Thing” featuring Janelle Monae. Not only was Estelle’s track the key ingredient in this weeks challenge, the beauty from Britain was a guest judge on the panel as well. The episode began with the DJs arriving at a Miami mansion that was later revealed to be the famous Circle House Studios. SMIRNOFF’s MOTM host Amanda Seales greeted the DJs and filled them in on their task for the episode. “Today you are all producers,” she said following the instructions for the challenge. Each DJ was given three hours to work with an engineer and create an original, creative and Estelle-centric remix to the singers’ new song. Loczi began crafting a more dubstep-centered remix, while Incrediboi was leaning heavily on the influences of trap music. Chris Karns on the other hand went straight for the soul as he used a classic Marvin Gaye instrumental as the backdrop for his remix while JayCeeOh built his remix from scratch. Estelle then stopped by the studio as the guys were working to check out what they had accomplished so far. With the second-to-last challenge ready to being, JayCeeOh took the stage first to premiere his remix to Estelle’s “Do My Thing.” JayCeeOh immediately worked on pumping up the crowd and proclaimed, “I’m about to show you how a real DJ flips a remix!” Amidst the pounding drums and bass drops, JayCeeOh went to work scratching live in areas that he had let blank so that he could showcase his DJ’ing skills in addition to what he was capable of as a producer. With all three judges on their feet following the song, Kid Capri spoke first. “I didn’t want it to stop,” he said. “You set the bar very very high.” [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qNVxGr9t8w&w=560&h=315] DJ Loczi was up next. “This record goes out to everyone who isn’t afraid to be themselves,” he said. His dubstep-laced remix roared through the speakers. Despite Loczi’s lack of actual DJing during his set, he made one heck of an impression on the judges. “That was like a tsunami!” Capri shouted. “I wish I would have seen some more turn-tabling but that beat was absolutely crazy.” Even Estelle came out and said that while it wasn’t exactly her cup of tea, she absolutely loved what Loczi had done with the song however his lack of actually touching the turntables would not be forgotten. Incrediboi followed with a more soulful and bouncy remix that allowed him to showcase the strength of such technical skills as scratching and live mixing. His blend of reggae, doo-wop and trap helped create a truly unique sound that was adored by all the judges.”You’re an incredible DJ and your scratching is amazing,” judge Ben Maddahi said following the set. “Your production ability is a lot better than I thought it would be.” Last up was Chris Karns who won Estelle’s heart the second he dropped the instrumental for Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t That Peculiar” behind her vocals. Throughout his set, Karns showcased his scratching skills over a double-timed beat and undoubtedly had more DJ skills on display during this challenge than any of the other DJs. “It was super creative and flawless,” said Ben. Judge Mia Moretti also had some kind words for Karns when she said, “that was the perfect marriage of turntablism and production!” Following the four sets showcasing each DJs remix to “Do My Thing,” the judges gathered to deliberate and decide who was the challenge’s winner and who would ultimately be getting their “record scratched” this week. The unanimous champion of the challenge was revealed to be JayCeeOh while DJ Loczi was sent home for not actually using any live DJ skills during his set. Next weeks season finale will find the final three DJs battling it out for a grand prize of $250,000 and the official title of SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX! Check back next week for another episode recap!
With only three episodes left, SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX is officially heating up as the remaining five DJs face their most demanding challenge yet: “bending the ten.” After a brief meeting with MOTM judge Ben Maddahi at the top of the episode about long-term goals and branding, the “final five” were brought to Miami’s Club Frequency where show host Amanda Seales filled them in on their challenge for the week. The “final five” DJs, which include Chris Karns, Incrediboi, JayCeeOh, Dynamix and Locszi, were tasked with incorporating ten songs, with varied BPM’s from multiple genres, into one cohesive set and play it for a packed house of club-goers and judges After spending a few hours in the workshop crafting their sets, Kid Capri stopped by to help offer some wise words to the DJs. While the overall vibe of the DJs was uplifting, it was very clear that this would not be an easy challenge by any means. DJ JayCeeOh, who has been one of the shows standout competitors this season, got things started during the showcase with Wilco’s “California Stars” that transitioned into Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and Method Man’s “Bring the Pain.” Throughout his transitions JayCeeOh showcased his scratching skills as he moved through records from Mister Magic, Dennis Ferrer and Jessie J. Despite the judges mostly straight faces, JayCeeOh knew he had to go out with a bang and that’s just what he did. Over Muddy Waters’s “Hoochie Coochie Man” he belted out a few lines of his own: “My name is JayCeeOh and I got all the tricks, after this show, I’m going to be Master of the Mix!” The judges ate it up and even Kid Capri was on his feet. “That set deserves a round of applause,” said judge Mia Moretti. “I didn’t hear one mess up.” However Ben Maddahi felt a little differently. “Some of your best and worst work was in this set tonight,” he said. “But you saved your ass when you got on the mic with Muddy Waters” –ben Chris Karns was up next and kicked things off with Melanie Fiona’s “4 a.m.” record which went into Cham’s “Ghetto Story” and Ciclon Cubano’s “Echale Salsa.” The highlight came when Karns broke down and chopped up the guitar from Wilco’s “California Stars” and re-created his own version of the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.” Moments after his set was complete Kid Capri exclaimed, “It’s not about feeling the music it’s about being a scientist with it and that’s what you did. It was dope!” DJ Locszi got right into the swing of things when he launched the iconic Hip-Hop record “Bring the Pain” and he continued to move seamlessly between the challenge’s other nine records. “You impressed me incredibly,” exclaimed judge Ben Maddahi. Kid Capri felt similarly when he said, “to be able to manipulate records and make them your own and get the crowd feeling you is what you did so congratulations.” Up next was DJ Dynamix who began scratching through Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” which he blended with Muddy Waters. Although the overall tone of his set began slow, he turned things up with some heavy drums once he got into tracks from Dennis Ferrer and Baby Cham. “I think some of the transitions were off and you lost the crowd at points in the set,” said Ben. ” But your scratches were clean and you made a great attempt.” Incrediboi began his set with a blend of “Ghetto Story” and “Hoochie Coochie Man” and continued to scratch superbly through records from Queen, Grover Washington Jr. and Method Man. Incrediboi clearly met the challenge’s tasks better than any of the other DJs that night despite ending his set 12 seconds early yet his fate was ultimately in the hands of the judges. Luckily they felt a similar way. “You caught my attention off the top,” said Kid Capri. “That was a good set my G!” Following the five sets the judges deliberated and discussed who they thought did the best and who did the worst. While there was no clear-cut loser there was certainly a unanimous winner in the form of DJ Locszi who prevailed at this week’s challenge and crafted a solid ten-song mix. Unfortunately for DJ Dynamix, his set just wasn’t up to par with that of his competition this week and he ultimately had his “record scratched.” Next weeks challenge will find the “final four” battling it out with their own original remixes to a new single by Grammy Award-winning singer Estelle who will also be a guest judge. JUICY J: STAYED TRIPPIN’ IN NYC!
Multi-platinum recording artist, DJ and producer Lil Jon brought the crunk to this week’s episode of SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX competition as a guest judge while the remaining six DJ’s fought for the title in their most creative challenge yet. Following an initial battle that saw Tina T, who was eliminated last week’s, try to get a spot back on the show (she didn’t), host Amanda Seales filled the DJ’s in on there challenge for the week which was dubbed “the most technical.” “Invent or Get Sent” required the six remaining DJ’s to piece together a creative set using all the possible DJ tools like Serato, scratch drumming, cues and other inventive DJ tricks. After some short time working on their sets in the lab, Lil Jon surprised the competitors and dropped some knowledge on them about his transition to DJ’ing and EDM. Most importantly though Jon shared his most important piece of information when he said, “you cant lose if you’ve got the whole place going nuts. Its all about the crowd.” JayCeeOh, who tied for first place last week alongside Chris Karns, kickd things off first during the challenge with M.O.P’s “Ante Up,” Ol Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and 2 Chainz’s “I’m Different.” Off of those three tracks alone he had the entire place rocking with him. Soon after he changed up the tempo and began mixing several other tracks together. “I thought you chose great samples to loop and switch up,” said Kid Capri. He continued, “You slipped up a few times but covered yourself up with a good scratch or good blend.” Lil Jon had much more priase for Jayceeoh. “That was creative as a motherf*cker! You did a great job,” Lil Jon shouted. Jayceeoh responded to the praise by simply stating that he just wanted to have some fun. DJ Locszi was up next and immediately got into mixing tracks from Kanye West, Carl Douglas, 2 Chainz and Deadmau5. Unfortunately his execution wasn’t nearly as on-point as he would have hoped. “Creating your own beat is one thing but making it sound flawless is another and that’s not what you were doing at all,” said Kid Capri. The Bronx-born Incrediboi followed Locszi with a genius mix of Daft Punk’s “One More Time” that he blended with Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl.” Incrediboi also took 2 Chainz’s “I’m Different” to heart when he called out each of his competitiors following the line “middle finger up to the competition.” While most of the judges seemed entertained, Kid Capri didn’t share the same sentiment. “Today was your weakest set,” he criticized. However Lil Jon came back and gave Incrediboi an ego boost by stating, “Overall you entertained the crowd and that’s what’s really important.” DJ Flyguy, who has seen his fair share of the bottom all season long, set out to prove that he still had skills and deserved to be in the running for the title. Unfortuantly, the DJ’s didn’t get to see any of them. Overall Flyguy’s set was sloppy and inventive-less. Ben Maddahi said point-blank, “that was one of the sloppiest mixes I’ve heard on the entire show.” “This is not the way I wanted to leave the show,” Flyguy cried backstage, knowing that he was at the top of the list of competitors to get sent home this week. The show’s early favorite to take SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX title, Chris Karns, was up last yet managed to still wow the DJ’s following the five sets that played before him. Between all the scratching, mixing, cues, and blending, Karns officially won the crowd over when he dropped Dead Prez’s classic track “Hip-Hop” that had all of the judges on their feet. “Whenever I stand up, that means you were the s###,” shouted Kid Capri. Both Ben and Lil Jon felt the same way when they said “that was a flawless victory” and “you just killed it!” There was little doubt that Flyguy, who was his own worst enemy during throughout the show, would be this week’s casualty, despite having to fight for his spot earloier on the show versus Tina T. The judges had a tougher time crowning the challenge’s victor. “Chris definitely did what was asked,” said Lil Jon. “But JayCeeOh made it fun for everybody from beginning to end.” Ultimatley, Chris Karns was celebrated for the most inventive set of the night and was crowned the challenges victor. Next week’s challenge will find the remaining five competitors “bending the ten” as they are tasked with mixing ten tracks all of which have completely different song structures. Following last week’s Miami-centric episode of SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX DJ competition, the remaining eight turntable maestros were tasked with creating a five-minute mega mix showcasing the EDM genre. With more than half of the third season behind us, this week’s cleverly dubbed “Half & Half” episode featured a number of twists, the first being that the competitors would be pairing up in teams of two and the second being that the least-liked set would send both DJ’s on a team packing. With last week’s victory under his belt, DJ Chris Karnes was given the authority to not just choose his partner for this weeks challenge; he would be assigning the other three teams partners as well. Karnes, without hesitation, chose DJ Jayceeoh, creator of the acclaimed “Super 7” series, who he felt is the best DJ in the competition beside himself. “Put us together and we’re like the dream team,” Chris proclaimed. “We should be able to beat any two DJ’s they throw at us.” After selecting Jayceeoh as his teammate, Karnes paired up the other remaining DJ’s starting with Tina T and Brian Dawe, then Incrediboi and DJ Locszi, and lastly DJ Flyguy and Dynamix. Each pair was given ten minutes to meet privately and create a game plan that was followed by three hours in the workshop to craft and create their EDM-inspired sets. Despite their confidence being at an all-time high, Jayceeoh and Karnes knew that there was a lot of room for error because they were taking a lot of risks with their set. “That practice run through that we did was horrible,” Karnes said. “We made a ton of mistakes that we usually wouldn’t.” Luckily for them, what went wrong for them during practice, went very right for them during their showcase. DJ Locszi and Flyguy on the other hand took a more simplistic approach by sticking to what they know. “I’ve never done a set with another DJ at the same exact time, “ Locszi revealed. “This is the first.” Before long the night’s challenge, which was held at Miami hotspot Frequency, was upon us. SMIRNOFF’s MOTM host Amanda Seales was joined by judges Kid Capri, DJ Mia Moretti, Ben Maddahi and guests the EC Twins. The first duo to unleash their set was the former weeks champion Chris Karnes with his partner for the challenge, DJ Jayceeoh. After some light scratching to a Lil Jon sample, the EDM music dropped and rotated back and forth between heavy mixing and scratching. As the set went on, you could see both DJ’s becoming more comfortable, not just with each other, but with the challenge as a whole. Their energy was up, and both the crowd and judges loved it. “That was very entertaining and very clean,” said Kid Capri. “I thought it was remarkable.” Tina T, who was the show’s only remaining female, and Brian Dawe were next. They immediately started trying out some more unconventional techniques like having Tina stand behind Brian and scratch with her hands without seeing the turntables. Despite the lack of mixing early in their set and DJ Capri’s initial look of disappointment, he began nodding his head. “I thought the chemistry was great and the performance was theatrical,” Capri explained. Ben Maddahi on the other hand was not as impressed, hitting the duo hard for their use of Aviici’s “Levels” which has been way overused during this seasons sets. Following the “married couple” was Dynamix and Flyguy who dubbed themselves “FlyNamix” for the challenge. Starting off with Lil Jon and Sidney Samson’s “Mutate,” the DJing duo mixed a number of songs including Basement Jaxx’s “Where’s Your Head At.” The team worked very well together and had a great energy and sense of humor behind their turntables. “I congratulate you for addressing the crowd cause there the most important,” Capri exclaimed. “I like the way you complement each other.” Last up was Incrediboi and DJ Locszi who explored the past and present of EDM music, or what they called the “history of house,” during their set. Although the crowd wasn’t really moving the pair still gave the set their all until things began to fall apart in. They pair did try to salvage their set in the end with simpler mixing and scratching. Incrediboi absolutely murdered (in a good way) the scratching and made the judges and crowd forget about everything that had happened earlier. “That took it to another level at the end,” Ben shouted. After an intense deliberation that was dubbed “the most difficult decision of the season, hands down,” the judges ultimately decided that there would have to be a tie for first place since Ben Maddahi felt Karnes and Jayceeoh were the best,” while guest judges the EC Twins felt that Incredibioi and Locszi were #1. Despite there being a tie for first between the competing tandems of DJ Chris Karnes/DJ Jayceeoh and DJ Locszi/Incrediboi, there was no doubt about who this weeks weakest duo was. The lovebirds known as DJ Tina T and Brian Dawe had their “records scratched” as they were sent packing (although a preview for next week hints that one of the eliminated DJ’s may be returning). Next week’s episode will feature multi-platinum rapper, DJ and producer Lil Jon as a guest judge when SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX hits episode nine of its third season! [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOK70kDPQfY&w=560&h=315] Check back next week for another episode recap! SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX Airs Tuesday’s at 12am on VH1.
The halfway mark for this season of SMIRNOFF’s MASTER OF THE MIX has officially arrived and out of 19 DJ’s from across the country who started the competition, only 9 “fighters” remain. This week’s Miami-centric episode featured Mr. 2 Rings himself, DJ Irie of the Miami Heat, who helped guide the nine remaining DJ’s through the challenge of creating an “Ode to Miami.” The challenge this week specifically asked the competitors to blend together all the local flavors of the South Florida city using genres like Miami Bass, Hip-Hop, and the many forms of both Club and Latin music. Following an inspired group trip to some of the city’s local musical landmarks the competitors hit the practice room to craft their sets for the night’s competition. First to hit the stage was radio personality and host of SMIRNOFF’s MOTM, Amanda Seales, who was joined by judges DJ Mia Moretti, Grammy Award-winning producer and DJ Kid Capri, and “triple threat” Ben Maddahi. DJ Dynamix, who kicked things off with an impressive set blending tracks like “Tootsie Roll” by the 69 Boyz, Pitbull’s “Culo,” Nicki Minaj’s “Pound the Alarm,” and “Miami” by LMFAO, was applauded by DJ Irie for crafting “a superior Miami set.” He was followed by DJ Loczi, whose goal was to pay homage to the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) scene in Miami. His up-tempo set featured Flo Rida, Pitbull, Daft Punk and Technotronic among others. DJ Tina T was next and was heavily criticized for her transitions, or lack thereof, by Ben Maddahi who said, “Appearance wise, you killed it but with the transitions, you failed.” Even Kid Capri scolded Tina T: “You could have done that set in Vegas.” Chris Karns on the other hand blazed through tracks from Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias and The 69 Boyz before he was joined on stage briefly by Luther Campbell Jr., son of the legendary 2 Live Crew member Luther Campbell. He received a well-deserved standing ovation from the judges who praised Karns’ skills. “Now that’s how you DJ,” exclaimed Kid Capri. “You played a perfect set. You did your thing tonight.” Following Karns was Los Angeles native DJ Jayceeoh who said early on in the episode that he was going to take some risks with his set and see how it went from there. Although he blended and cut together a good number of tracks from the likes of J.T. Money, Drake, Lil Jon and Trick Daddy, the judges didn’t seem overly thrilled with what they had heard. “That was a little underwhelming,” said Ben Maddahi. Even Irie had a few words for Jayceeoh; “I know your talented and technically sound but I cannot say that you captured Miami.” DJ Mia Moretti on the other hand said she loved it and she knows the crowd loved it too so there was definitely a difference of opinion between the three judges. The episode began to wind down as the shows two Miami natives, DJ Brian Dawes and DJ Fly Guy, respectively hit the stage. While Dawes impressed the judges, Fly Guy fell short. “I feel like you let your city down tonight,” said judge Ben. “Nothing was on point, no one should have represented this city better than you,” professed Capri. Incrediboi was next at bat and started right off with the latin tracks, one of which he broke down on an MPC machine, and then moved into tracks by Trick Daddy and Iconz. Guest judge DJ Irie applauded Incrediboi’s skills and ability to incorporate the genre of Bachata from the Dominican Republic into his frantic (in a good way) set. “Today you made me wish I was Spanish. That’s a game changer,” said Kid Capri. “The Mixing Vixen” DJ Dimepiece closed out the episode with her set which featured LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” Luther Campbell’s “I Wanna Rock,” and “Shut Up” by Trick Daddy. Unfortunately for Dimepiece, who was almost eliminated in two previous episodes, the DJ’s still weren’t feeling her. “It wasn’t Miami,” said Kid Capri. Dimepiece, who consistently let the judges down this season eventually had her “record scratched” at the end of the episode and was sent home. DJ Chris Karn won the episodes “Ode to Miami” challenge that saw the likes of DJ Loczi, DJ Flyguy and DJ Tina T all in the bottom yet ultimately safe this week and eager to step their game up for next weeks challenge which will find the remaining 8 DJ’s pairing up for what is being dubbed “the season’s biggest challenge.” Check out our interview with DJ Jayceeoh below: How does it feel to see yourself on TV competing for notoriety among things? Is it still surreal for you? DJ Jayceeoh: It’s pretty crazy especially after going through the process of filming the show and knowing how things play out and seeing how things are edited and the packages they put together for TV. It is crazy to see myself on TV in this light and know that people all across the country are watching it play out. What’s the relationship like between you and the other competitors? Is it straight competition or was there more of a more supportive vibe throughout the end of the season? DJ Jayceeoh: It’s actually pretty supportive, surprisingly. Everyone is really cool with each other and there’s no real beef that goes on. There’s of course a couple little things between people but in general it’s a very good spirited and competitive vibe. Of course everyone is trying to support one another and me, I mean at the end of the day, I’m just trying to win. We’re all cool and everything but when it comes down to it, I’m trying to crush everyone. Who do you think is the toughest judge or harshest critic on the show? DJ Jayceeoh: It varies. Honestly it’s either Kid Capri or Ben Maddahi, but I’d probably say Ben is the harshest critic because he’s coming form more of an executive standpoint so I feel his whole mindset coming into it is a little […]
The successes of Kyle Lucas have not come overnight and he’ll be the first to admit it. As not just a solo artist but also the frontman for Alternative Hip-Hop group Vonnegutt, Lucas has had his fair share of ups and downs over the years. Things do however seem to finally be falling into place and with the recent release of his new solo project, It’s Always Sunny In Marietta 2, Lucas has a fresh outlook on the industry and the things he needs to do to conquer it. AllHipHop.com spoke to the Marietta, Georgia native about his most recent offering to the fans, the status of his relationship with Purple Ribbon founder Big Boi, what he’s working on currently and much more. Check out our exclusive interview with Kyle Lucas below: How do you find the time to juggle all the projects you’re a part of and prioritize one over the other? Kyle Lucas: Well honestly from the outside looking in it looks way more hectic and crazier than it really is. You know Vonnegutt just released a project in December so I’ve had some time and while I was touring with the group and recording our album for the past few years I had been doing a track here and there so [It’s Always Sunny In Marietta 2] is just a collection of songs and emotions from the past year and a half. I didn’t just sit down and bang out 17 songs for the project. It was just something I was doing on the side and turned out to be way iller than I thought it would be. So right now that’s kind of been the focus. Congrats by the way on releasing the Vonnegutt album last year. How does it feel to finally have that out in the fans’ hands? Kyle Lucas: Man it’s been incredible because as a band, like four members of a band, that album was everything to us. We spent like four years on it doing different pieces here and there on tour and doing stuff with [Big Boi] and just piecing together that album. Unfortunately it didn’t do well but to us it’s such a milestone because behind the scenes and the amount of struggle that we all went through to get an album out, it’s just a labor of love. The day that it came out was just like a four-year weight off my shoulders. You said it didn’t do that well which I assume means sales wise. How does that affect the process of working on a follow-up to Falling Up the Stairs? Kyle Lucas: I mean to be honest we haven’t really worked on anything new. Two of the guys got other gigs so they can’t tour as much so me and Taylor, the drummer, just started doing my solo stuff and touring on that. So it was never like we broke up or anything, we just financially and emotionally were kind of drained by the time it came out. I know Neil who plays guitar in the group sent me a bunch of demos so when the time comes we’ll be at a better place to release another album. [Falling Up the Stairs] just kind of drained us to get it out there. What about your association with Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon imprint? Is that just a deal that was struck with Vonnegutt or are you signed as a solo artist as well? Kyle Lucas: No I never signed a solo deal with Big Boi, that was just a deal for Vonnegutt, which was a joint venture with Average Joe’s. So the Vonnegutt album only came out under Purple Ribbon/AVJ. I’m kind of just being independent right now. How hands-on was Big Boi during the process of creating that album and what’s your current relationship with him like? Kyle Lucas: Oh yeah he was very hands-on. He told us what he liked and what he didn’t like and he definitely gave his two cents. I haven’t really spoken to him in a couple months to be honest. I know he’s doing his thing, but there is definitely no bad blood. That’s the homie for life and he’s my favorite artist. If I ever need anything he’s got me and vice-versa. Recently you released a new solo project, It’s Always Sunny In Marietta 2. For someone who might just be discovering Kyle Lucas, what would you say is the definitive track that they should be checking for on that? Kyle Lucas: I think musically I’m at my best on that project. I think “Red Wine and Xanax” would be the track because it represents a true story and I’m very big on being super honest and you can tell when you listen to my music that I’m super self-deprecating and super honest. Lyrically, I think “Coffee Break” flow-wise is pretty on-point and then “Worth It,” the song I did with Johnny Craig kind of set off the whole vibe for our project so I’d probably say those three. You can definitely bounce around though too. Specifically on It’s Always Sunny 2 you worked with someone like STS who I am a huge fan of as well as people like Pretty Lights, GLC and Boi-1da. What other collaborations have you done recently that people should get excited for? Kyle Lucas: Man this stuff I’m doing with Johnny Craig… We’re about to light s### up right now with this one. I haven’t really worked with anyone else recently aside from being in the studio with him recently ‘cause that’s my main focus and then I’m probably going to work on a solo EP to sell on iTunes sometime during Warped Tour this summer. That’s dope you like STS though, he’s like my family and homie. I saw him open for Travis Barker and Mix Master Mike a couple years ago in New York and the crowd didn’t really get into him for whatever reason but that was the moment I became a fan […]
