Houston is home to many legends, from Scarface to Trae Tha Truth to Travis Scott to now Megan Thee Stallion.
From the Southside of the city also hails Yung Al, putting on for the ghetto the only way he knows how.
When asked to describe his sound, he answers, “One of a kind, unique. It’s a genuine sound. I just do me man, I’m not scared. I say what they’re scared to say.”
This means instead of mainstream rapper flexing and spitting about being rich, he brings it back to humble beginnings: the struggle.
While he’s born in New Iberia, Louisiana, it’s H-town he calls home.
Most recently, he teamed up with DJ Swamp Izzo for his new mixtape called “Borrowed Time,” a 10-track project laced with beats from GNB, Quay Global, Wassup Bans, CedDidIt, Blonded Dread, and G-Money Made It.

AllHipHop: What’s it mean to be from Houston?
Yung Al: Houston is the trendsetters of the world. We’re the trendsetters because everybody comes there. Some of them just come there, they run with our style. No offense.
AllHipHop: What were you seeing growing up?
Yung Al: All kinds of stuff: deaths, crime, everything you can think of that goes on in the hood. I’ve seen it all.
AllHipHop: Were you in the streets?
Yung Al: So-so, but that’s what made me. When it’s right there, when you grow up in the neighborhood where it goes down like that, you’re kind of forced to venture off over there.
AllHipHop: Why are you the ghetto influencer?
Yung Al: Because in my city, I’m one of the faces of the ghetto. Not even kind of, they look up to me. I’m a big influencer over there. I got more love at home than anywhere.
AllHipHop: You stay in the hood still?
Yung Al: Nah I stay outside the hood, I go to the hood every day though. I moved.
AllHipHop: What is it like seeing Meg kill it out of H-Town?
Yung Al: It’s pretty interesting. Because before I got shot in August, I was one of the mains. It was me, a guy named Fast Lane, then it was Meg. That’s the order it was. Then I got shot. This happened last year. You know, Megan blew up like this [snaps]. Meg was already working, she was climbing to the top. She blew up.
AllHipHop: What’s your relationship like with her?
Yung Al: I don’t think she knows me. I speak to her, I done met her.
AllHipHop: What are the pros and cons of being independent?
Yung Al: The good part is the money. When it’s rolling, it’s rolling. The bad part is you’ll run into a lot of people that’ll f##k you over if you’re not paying attention. For the most part, just pay attention.
AllHipHop: What can we expect next?
Yung Al: A lot more music. I have my album dropping called Yung Talk, might drop November. It’s a bunch of heat. My last project I dropped, I didn’t have no features. f##k it, I might do some this time though.
