Ice Cube Explains How Chicago Violence Influenced ‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’

ICE CUBE ADDRESSES CHICAGO IN NEW BARBERSHOP FILM

(AllHipHop News)  As Ice Cube preps for Barbershop: The Next Cut and the movie’s April 15th release, the West-Coast OG sat down with the Tom Joyner Morning Show to speak on how the fourth movie in the Barbershop series came together.

To date Ice Cube has four movies in the Barbershop film series; Barbershop, Barbershop 2: Back In Business, Beauty Shop a 2005 spin-off of the series and now Barbershop: The Next Cut.

In the new film, Cube maintains the comedy theme, but also adds a touch of seriousness to the film as well, addressing the violence in Chicago.

“Yea that’s why we did the movie, we haven’t done an installment for 12 years, and it was like we needed to have a great reason to do the movie —  other than just talking about everyone in the barbershop,” Cube said laughing. “But we wanted to wrap it around a serious subject – everybody knows whats going on in Chicago with the youth, you know with the murders.”

In the movie Ice Cube’s character (Calvin) is trying to keep his son safe and out of the streets, so there is struggle in the movie between father and son that many families will relate to across the world.

“Calvin has 14-year-old son now, who has dreads and he could give a damn about a barbershop. So it’s about a father trying to keep his son out of the streets, so I think everyone from all walks of life can relate to that,” Ice Cube said.

Chicago native Lamorne Morris also stars in the movie and says that he was moved to “tears” during one of Ice Cube’s monologues in the film.

Throughout the interview Cube throws in his classic West Coast “yaay yaay” as he describes the film that also includes a handful of rappers, including obviously Cube himself.

Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Common and Eve all make their appearance in the fourth installment of Cube’s classic film series that follows up Cube’s highly successful Straight Out of Compton.

Most recently Ice Cube was quoted as saying he is working on having his own movie studio and he was also rumored to have a Marvel movie in the works although he quickly shot that idea down on Twitter.
