Mystikal Sued Over Cajun Sayings

Louisiana inventor Steve Winn is suing Mystikal for copyright infringement for over $1 million dollars. According to MTV, Mystikal is being sued by Steve Winn, the inventor of Cajun in Your Pocket, which is a key battery operated key chain that says six Cajun phrases when pressed. According to the lawsuit, Mystikal used the phrases on his hit song "Shake Ya Ass" without proper permission. The phrases, "You gotta suck da head on dem der crawfish, " "I love you like a pig loves corn,” "Laissez les bon temps rouler” (“Let the good times roll”), and "We gon’ pass good time, yeah, cher," will land the rapper in court defending himself in September. "It really stands out in the song," Winn’s lawyer Greg Eveline told MTV. "We’re not asking for the world. We just want our share. Mystikal is from [Louisiana], so it’s obvious where [the phrases] came from." Mystikal’s lawyer Roy Maughan Jr. refutes the claims and dismisses the lawsuit, claiming the phrases are common in the Cajun language and that Winn cannot copyright them. Maughan said that they will dispute the claim entirely. "On their own Web site, it claims those are ‘authentic Cajun expressions,’" Maughan told MTV. "Well if that’s the case, you didn’t make them up! The expressions haven’t been modified in such a way that gives them uniqueness or protection." Cajun In Your Pocket has gone after another musician, Ani Difranco. Her case was different because she used the actual recordings contained in the Cajun In Your Pocket key chain in her song "Angel Food." That recording cost her around $20,000 when the lawsuit was settled.

The Death Of A Legend, Eric Wright: 1963-1995

Today (March 26) marks the 7 year anniversary of the passing of the legendary Eric "Eazy E" Wright. Eazy E passed away from complications due to advanced HIV. Eazy E, who is credited by many for bringing what the mainstream media has called "Gangsta Rap" to commercial acclaim was just 31 years old when he died. A rapper, father and business man, Eazy E’s legend is well published. According to popular legend, Eazy-E grew up in the gang life in California and sold drugs, which later allegedly financed his record label, Ruthless. The original N##### With Aptitudes consisted of Ice-Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, D.O.C., M.C. Ren and Eazy E himself. The group released the classic NWA and the Posse in 1987 and never looked back. Ruthless landed a distribution deal with Priority in early 1987 and the label released Eazy’s first solo album, Eazy Duz It in 1988. "We Want Eazy" was played on Yo! MTV Raps consistently and brought the NWA members to national prominence. The following year, NWA released one of the most influential records ever recorded, Straight Outta Compton. In addition having the theme song’s video banned from television, the group managed to sell over one million records, by word of mouth. After months of financial turmoil, Ice-Cube left the group in 1989 to pursue a successful solo career. In 1990, NWA released the successful 100 Miles And Running EP, followed by Efil4zaggin (N##### 4 Life). The group fell apart, while Eazy released his second solo album, 5150 – Home 4 Tha Sick. After allegedly being threatened by Suge Knight and pipe wielding cronies, Dr. Dre left to start Death Row and everyone knows the story from that point forward. Eazy still released records, including 187Um Killa, in which he took the time to answer Dr. Dre’s dis records aimed at him. Eazy signed Bone Thug N Harmony in 1994 continuing the success of his Ruthless Records empire. The following year the Godfather Of Gangsta Rap was diagnosed with HIV and shortly afterwards passed away. Eazy’s label continues to release material from the late great veteran, including Eternal E, and Str8 Off Tha Streetz Of Muthaphukkin Compton. Today March 26th, to commemorate his passing, The Real Godfather Of Gangsta Rap has been released, which contains unreleased songs from the legend. Rap must also run in his family’s blood line. According to sources, his son who goes by the rap name of Lil E, is currently recording tracks with veteran West Coast producer Daz Dillinger.

Cormega Explains The True Meaning

Queensbridge rapper Cormega is in New York finishing his second solo album, The True Meaning. Cormega said his sophomore effort would be a departure from his first, The Realness. “It’s a reflection of myself. Like this album I’m trying to intensify my respect as a lyricist as opposed to just screaming QB or being labeled a thug rapper,” he said to AllHipHop.com. At press time, Cormega said that, aside from the featured producers he wouldn’t be featuring any other rappers on the new album. “I don’t have any guest appearances at this point. I really hate albums like that. I just want people to feel me for me,” he said to AllHiphop.com On The Realness, his first official release, he dissed fellow QB native Nas several times, but Mega said that wouldn’t be the case on The True Meaning. “I’m not focusing on Nas, but I got something for him. Cormega also said alluding to the song “Love In/ Love Out, which addresses the situation. He said that he and his former friend wouldn’t be mending their relationship soon. “The song [“Ether” from Stillmatic] itself didn’t bother me, but for somebody to say suck their d**k, it’s a whole different ball game,” he said. He said it violated a code of ethics from people from the streets. Cormega did say he was happy the way The Realness was received from the buying public. “The album was meant for the people that got it. And if an independent artist do 100, 000 sold, that’s like ghetto gold,” he said. Like other independent artists, he said he feels like he gained respect within the music industry as well. “I was humbled byt the experience [of selling 100, 000 units], because I didn’t know that many people were feeling me like that, he said. In the past, the industry has been difficult for Mega, whose first album, My Testament, was never released commercially on Def Jam Records as planned. However, Cormega has established his own label, Legal Hustle Records, with distribution through Landspeed and he also serves as the executive producer on the project as well. With the new album, he said it will link his previous two “This album is the umbilical cord between The Realness and The Testament,” he said. “The new fans need to realize that hip-hop is historic. Following the history of rap, its so hard to have an album that’s equates the first product.” “Surprisingly, people that are really critical of my music say that this album is better than my last one,” Cormega said.

Luke Attempts To Lock Down Miami Beach

Luther Campbell and a group of local Miami, Florida promoters have formed a promotions company to help provide events and keep order during Memorial Day in Miami Beach. Luke’s Progressive Righteous Organized Inc. applied for a special events permit from Miami three weeks ago. According to published reports, Campbell has come up with a plan to control the crowds during the holiday and the city is generally receptive to his proposal, which calls for several events during the four day weekend, including a charity golf event, an arts festival, a celebrity basketball game and a two day time concerts on Miami Beach. Campbell says that these events alone will draw an estimated 30,000 people with top talent. Campbell and beach officials are still negotiating security measures. Last years holiday saw a record number of people attend, which city officials have admitted, caught them off guard. Campbell is also asking for use of the Miami Beach Convention Center at night, as a gathering point for people who have been turned away from Miami’s trendy night clubs, which also was a major problem last year.
