Casting Agency & Studio Issue Apology For "Straight Outta Compton" Casting Call Notice

AGENCY APOLOGIZES FOR N.W.A BIOPIC CASTING CALL ANNOUNCEMENT CALLING SEEN AS RACIALLY INSENSITIVE

(AllHipHop News) A casting notice for the upcoming N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton sparked controversy for language many perceived as being racially insensitive and stereotypical.

The casting call ranked potential actresses into four different categories based on attractiveness, skin color, and hair. The lowest ranked group was to include African-American women with medium to dark skin tone and be “poor, not in good shape.”

The agency responsible for the posting has now issued an apology via Facebook. Kristan Berona of Sande Alessing Casting wrote:

I’ve been wanting to say this for two days and now I can.

I would like to sincerely apologize for recently posting a casting announcement that used offensive language to recruit women for a film our agency is working on. My intention was not to offend anyone and I’m so deeply sorry for not realizing the insensitivity in its content.

Universal Pictures, the studio producing Straight Outta Compton, also issued a statement about the casting call notice. The Hollywood Reporter published Universal’s statement:

Universal Pictures and the filmmakers for ‘Straight Outta Compton’ did not approve and do not condone the information in this casting notice. We regret and sincerely apologize for being in any way associated with the offensive descriptions it contained.
