(AllHipHop News) Donald “Childish Gambino” Glover may have a TV hit on his hands. The actor/rapper’s Atlanta dramedy is already a critical darling.
The show about the Atlanta rap scene premiered last night (September 6) on FX. Prior to the initial broadcast, the series had already earned a 100% rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
The review aggregator website critic consensus reads, “Ambitious and refreshing, Atlanta offers a unique vehicle for star and series creator Donald Glover’s eccentric brand of humor — as well as a number of timely, trenchant observations.”
In addition, the review site Metacritic also gives Glover’s show high marks. Atlanta collected a score of 91 which indicates “universal acclaim.”
While the professional critics are fond of Atlanta, the court of public opinion often has a greater impact on the success of a television program.
According to the collective Twitterverse, Glover’s take on Southern culture connected with a lot of viewers. #AtlantaFX was the #1 trending topic on the social media platform as the show was airing.
Atlanta stars Donald Glover (Community, The Martian) as Earnest “Earn” Marks, Keith Stanfield (Selma, Straight Outta Compton) as Darius, and Brian Tyree Henry (Boardwalk Empire, Vice Principals) as up-and-coming rapper Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles.

No shucking and jiving or coonery, just a sophisticated and nuanced mirror on Blackness. Hope #AtlantaFX gets a fair shot.

#AtlantaFX is probably the most realistic/hilarious portrayal I’ve ever seen of the present day middle class black experience in the south
