(AllHipHop News) Rapper/label head/sports agent Jay-Z has completely dominated the headlines this week. The Brooklyn-born businessman released his 12th studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail that’s heading for the number one spot on the charts, received a platinum plaque for the LP already, launched a new ad campaign with Budweiser, and commandeered Twitter for a day. It appears that Jay wants to continue his takeover of the entertainment world by adding another budding superstar to his Roc Nation Sports roster.
Yahoo Sports is reporting that Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig is considering joining Kevin Durant, Robinson Cano, Skylar Diggins, and Geno Smith at the Roc. Puig got Jay-Z’s contact information from one of his teammates, and after meeting with Roc Nation reps last month he was said to be “intrigued” by the multi-layered deal presented.
Puig has captivated baseball fans this year after making his major league debut on June 3. Since being called up, the Cuban defector has hit .394 with 8 home runs and 19 RBI’s in 35 games. He has become a regular on SportsCenter’s “Top Ten” plays countdown with his timely homers and amazing defensive feats.
If Puig does sign with Roc Nation his current agent Jaime Torres would still be entitled to the full commission on the $42 million deal he signed in 2012.
Jay-Z spoke about why he chose to venture into the sports agent field during a recent interview with Power 105.1 suggesting that the some of the old regime may not have their clients’ best interest at heart.
“I do this because it’s an extension of the bigger goal. The bigger goal is for all [athletes] to get their just due. Not get half-ass agents or people who rob them,” said Jay. “We’re talking guys who are signing for $90 million dollars are broke in four years. That’s terrible money management, because [other agents] don’t care… [Roc Nation Sports is] almost a better money management firm and then agents.”
