Jason Bourne is our version of James Bond. Plain and simple. The franchise, which kicked off in 2002 with Academy Award-nominated actor Matt Damon in the role of Bourne, has earned more than $1 billion dollars at the global box office.
So when Damon and Paul Greengrass, who directed the franchise’s last entries, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, decided not to return, the folks at Universal Pictures put their money on Jeremy Renner, now more famously known to the world as Hawkeye from Marvel Studio’s blockbuster The Avengers.
Renner is no stranger to action and espionage though as he’s previously starred in The Hurt Locker and one of 2011’s top money-makers, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.
Check out the new trailer below followed by the official plot synopsis:
“The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.”
The Bourne Legacy hits theaters on August 3.
