(AllHipHop News) Roc Nation emcee J Cole says he took a new approach to forming his upcoming sophomore album Born Sinner. The North Carolina native spoke with Fuse and shared that he changed his writing style and his method for song selection on the new LP.
Cole drew inspiration for taking a different route with the latest project from reading Julia Cameron’s international bestseller The Artist’s Way. The book helped him overcome writer’s block and influenced him to start writing on paper again rather than typing lyrics into his phone.
“I don’t know how I found out about this book. It found me,” said Cole. “Basically, what it wants you to do is to wake up in the morning, and the first thing you do when you wake up is write three pages freehand, non-stop.”
Cole also reveals the material on the new album was created just for this project as oppose to his past works being put together using old material from various recording sessions.
“The first album [Cole World: The Sideline Story] didn’t really feel like I was working on an album. It felt like I was piecing together things,” said Cole. “On this album, I started with nothing… I literally started from scratch. Next thing you know I got nine songs, ten songs. It was just a more organic feel.”
