SLMN (pronounced Sol-o-mon) is a Toronto-based artist and producer-to-watch making waves within the industry. Music has always been a part of SLMN’S life and upbringing, shared how grew up hearing his dad play Sudanese music on the oud, a middle eastern instrument often played in the pentatonic scale. Listeners can often hear the melodies of his music follow this same scale mixed in with a variety of genres like hip-hop, R&B, and alternative rock.
Describing his sound as being “soulful, hard-hitting and with a hint of melancholy in each track,” listeners will be taken on a journey of introspection whenever they press play on any song SLMN has a hand in. “Music has always been my way to dig into my own soul, and peer into others,” said SLMN. It’s always helped me reflect on my life, my feelings, and has always been an outlet to express emotions without using words.”
SLMN was discovered by a former manager of The Neptunes, Rob Walker, and has been signed to Sony Music Publishing since 2018. In that time he has secured a number of placements such as on “Caution” by Mariah Carey, the title track of the icon’s 15th album which also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s R&B & Hip-Hop albums chart and #5 on the US Billboard 200.
Other tracks SLMN has secured placements on have been with artists such as Russ, Lil Gnar, Lil Yachty, Elijah Blake, Roy Woods, and more. SLMN also has projects of his own, having released his debut EP, Late Bloomer, in April of 2020. The project garnered over 5 million streams and was even featured as the banner for the R&B section for Apple Music Canada.
When asked about what the future holds for him, SLMN shared that he has a single that will be released soon with Kvn Rose, a new artist he is developing, titled “Where Did You Go.” The track is set to release ahead of his next EP with Rose performing all of the songs.
He also teased that he has some major placements on the way but afraid of jinxing them by revealing too soon, keeps the details of those close to his chest. When asked what he hopes that listeners take away from his music he leaves us with this: “I hope fans can dig deep within themselves when listening to my music if they resonate. If not, I hope they just enjoy the sounds.”
