DJ Premier & A$AP Ferg Bring “Our Streets” To MTV’s TRL

Yesterday, legendary producer DJ Premier and A$AP Ferg performed their hit single “Our Streets” live on MTV’s TRL. The song is one of the first projects born from the newly re-launched Payday Records label.  After an introduction from the Black Eyed Peas, the exciting “Our Streets” performance is a throwback to park jams and block parties; Premier’s turntables are set up atop New York City trash cans with a park bench, basketball goal, and chain link fence surrounding the stage. The track can be described as a classic New York hip-hop record, combining DJ Premier’s signature soulful beats and A$AP Ferg’s raw MC sound. The track also marks Premier and Ferg’s first collaboration together, after crossing paths on numerous occasions, waiting for the best opportunity to create. Premier describes the song as a fusion of his generation’s rap scene and Ferg’s scene, and the recently released music video stays consistent with this vision, saluting that throwback New York vibe. Throughout the 90s, Premier played an integral role in Payday bringing in artists to the label and producing a number of the label’s biggest hits including “Come Clean,” and “Supa Star.”

Pounds – “Francis Ford”

Rochester, N.Y.’s own Pounds drops a VHS-produced track from the rapper’s great October release, Rules and Parameters, that further demonstrated his knack for delivering lyrically vivid mafioso rap. After all, this particular sub-genre is at its finest when emcees can bring such harsh, difficult stories to life with their words. And to say Pounds does that on “Francis Ford” would be an understatement. The New York rapper is conflicted not just on the track, but in the video as well. Otto captures this with scenes of Pounds contemplating his life as a hustler and as a father, two hats he wears proudly but, again, with severe conflict. It’s for those reasons that when he spits bars like, “The city’s on fire so I gotta vent/ Make it past twenty’s an accomplishment,” you can feel that mental struggle. Check out the visuals, and support Rules and Parameters which is available now through all major digital retailers and streaming services.
