Billboard Magazine will honor the legacies of hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa and the Isley Brothers during the company’s second annual Billboard-AURN (American Urban Radio Networks) R&B/Hip-Hop Awards show August 9th.
The Founder’s Award, which will be bestowed upon both artists, is a first for Billboard and will recognize the artists for their contributions and influence over their respective genres of music.
The awardees are determined by the editors of Billboard.
Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards is also a conference that goes from Aug. 7-9 in Miami, FL and discusses topics like urban radio in the digital age, radio programming and independent labels.
The Bronx-born Afrika Bambaataa is generally considered to be the Godfather of Hip-Hop because he was able to reform gang members into The Zulu Nation (www.zulunation.com), the largest international hip-hop organization “dedicated to music and, above all, peace.” In the 80’s Bambaataa, along with the Soul Sonic Force, recorded the classic “Planet Rock” as well as hundreds of other songs. He has worked with artists like James Brown, George Clinton, Sly & Robbie, UB40 and Boy George.
Last May, BringTheNoise.com announced the creation of “The True School Show,” a show to be hosted by Afrika Bambaataa.
