Silk Sonic has dethroned Lil Nas X’s one-week reign over Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. The super-duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak saw their debut single “Leave the Door Open” replace “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” atop the weekly tally.
“Leave the Door Open” climbed two spots from #3 to #1 on the most recent Hot 100 with 21.5 million streams and 28,600 copies sold. The single also rose to a new peak of #2 on the Radio Songs chart. In addition, the track’s music video has amassed over 125 million global views on YouTube.
Mars now has eight Hot 100 Number Ones in his career – “Nothin’ on You” with B.o.B. (2010), “Just the Way You Are” (2010), “Grenade” (2011), “Locked Out of Heaven” (2012), “When I Was Your Man” (2013), “Uptown Funk!” with Mark Ronson (2015), “That’s What I Like” (2017), and “Leave the Door Open” with Silk Sonic (2021).
The Honolulu-born musician posted on Instagram, “Cmon @anderson._paak We did it!! Thank you everyone for supporting this song. Y’all really Came throoooougghhhhh. And we’re just getting started. Both Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak first announced the official formation of their musical tag-team earlier this year. They also revealed Parliament-Funkadelic legend Bootsy Collins will be the special guest host of the Silk Sonic album.
“For me, Bootsy is the definition of a superstar, just for everything. The songs, the vibes…” said Mars in a March interview. “There are so many artists that you could see that grew up on him. And me and Andy being a couple of guys that just grew up loving that.”
Silk Sonic showcased their chemistry during their first live performance of “Leave the Door Open” at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards on March 14. A week earlier, the Paak/Mars combo expressed interest in taking their act on the road for a possible 2021 tour.
