(AllHipHop News) Earlier this year, Dominique “Lil Baby” Jones revealed he was partnering with Doritos for the “Spark The Beat” competition. Aspiring musicians were able to submit a beat or vocal track for a chance to win a share of the $100,000 prize and record a track with the Quality Control Music artist.
“Me and Doritos hooked up back in June or July to do this ‘Spark The Beat’ contest. The marketing team on my label hooked up with Doritos. They gave me a rundown of what was going to be going on and asked me if I would be interested. I was like, ‘Definitely,’” Lil Baby tells AllHipHop. The “Drip Too Hard” performer adds, “When I started going through [the contestants] and a lot of stuff was similar, I started looking for things that stood out, someone who was different.”
Lil Baby and an expert panel reviewed countless entries before selecting Arizona rapper Ali Tomineek and Atlanta producer Rashad “ShadOnTheBeat” Jackson as the “Spark The Beat” winners. Lil Baby met wit the two victors in the studio to create a song featuring Tomineek’s rhymes and Jackson’s production.
“We actually re-recorded the song. When I sent them the song, it was on another beat so we re-recorded the song on the new beat – my version and the new vocals,” explains Baby. “It’s gonna come out next month. It’s not gonna be on my album. It’s gonna be a single release.”
Through the process of evaluating the “Spark The Beat” contenders, Lil Baby was exposed to a lot of unsigned artists looking to launch their careers on a mainstream level. Some of the acts that missed out on the opportunity to collab with the 24-year-old hitmaker this time could get a phone call or DM from Dominique in the future.
“That was the good part about it too. Just because I only could pick two winners, it still gave me a chance to met thousands and thousands of new artists that are really talented,” says Lil Baby. “I’m in the process of reaching out to a couple of people that didn’t get the chance to win.”
The “Spark The Beat” contest probably will not be the final time Doritos and Lil Baby band together. When asked about more possible partnerships with the tortilla chips brand, Baby offered, “Definitely, definitely. We have something else ahead.” Could a Doritos Super Bowl commercial starring Lil Baby follow other high-profile ads with Hip Hop stars like Busta Rhymes and Chance The Rapper?
