(AllHipHop News) Legendary music star and BET “I Am Hip Hop” honoree Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is now connected to an NATAS-nominated TV program. Viceland’s Rivals: The Boom Squad earned an Outstanding Long Sports Documentary nod at the 39th Annual Sports Emmy Awards.
“Not in my wildest dreams would I ever think one of my projects would have been selected for a Sports Emmy Awards nomination,” says Campbell. “Boom Squad is the first project I’ve worked on for television in years and getting this nomination, at the start, is amazing.”
Rivals: The Boom Squad served as the premiere episode of the VICE World of Sports series. Luke’s Miami-based youth football team is at the center of the doc. The Viceland production follows Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman and the story of murdered 6-year-old Liberty City Warriors player King Carter.
Additionally, Luke Films and LeBron James’ SpringHill Entertainment partnered for Starz’s Warriors of Liberty City. The docuseries screened at this year’s SXSW Festival in Texas. Lionsgate is also reportedly working with Luke Films on a biopic about Campbell and his 2 Live Crew rap group.
“I am excited about creating ‘must-see’ TV,” adds Uncle Luke. “The best is yet to come!”
Rivals: The Boom Squad is competing against ESPN’s 30 For 30: Celtics/Lakers: Best of Enemies, Fox’s 89 Blocks, Netflix’s Counterpunch, and Showtime’s Disgraced. The 2018 Sports Emmy Awards will take place on May 8 at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.
