(AllHipHop News) A lawyer for Meek Mill has blasted the “mind-blowing” allegations that a policeman involved in his case reportedly lied under oath to put the rapper behind bars.
Mill, real name Robert Williams, was sentenced to two-to-four years behind bars in November, for violating his probation relating to a 2008 drug and gun bust.
And on Wednesday, former Philadelphia police officer Jerold Gibson accused one of his ex-colleagues of lying under oath. According to Philly.com, Gibson filed a sworn statement disputing the claims of Mill’s arresting officer in 2007, Reggie Graham.
Graham was the only witness to testify against the rapper during the 2008 trial.
Gibson accused Graham of falsely accusing Mills of pointing a gun at police as they tried to arrest him outside of a suspect drug stash house, according to the report.
In the wake of Gibson’s sworn statement, Mill’s legal team have blasted the revelations, and have started a new push to get the rapper released.
“It’s mind-blowing, but it’s also just par for the course in this case,” attorney Joe Tacopina told Billboard. “It really is for this case. It’s over the top. It’s insane.”
“The guilty verdicts were expressly based on the court crediting Officer Graham’s testimony,” one of Mill’s legal team, lawyer Peter Goldberger, wrote to the judge in a motion filed Wednesday. “Without Graham’s testimony, (he) could not have been convicted on any count.”
Meek is set to go before Judge Genece Brinkley on April 16, with his team hoping he’ll have his prison sentence overturned.
Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper revealed a list of police officers who had a documented history of lying, racial bias, cruelty, or abuse of power, including Graham.
