The 7th Annual Mixshow
Power Summit kicked off this week in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The 4 day summit
brings together some of the best mixshow and club deejays in the world, as well
as some of the hottest talent all of the major labels have to offer.
On Thursday, September
30th, the Mixshow Power Summit awarded Grandmaster Flash with a special commemorative
award for his pioneering talent and vision in turntablism.
MPS founder Rene
McLean brought in Hip-Hop Summit Action Network president Dr. Ben Chavis and
Big Daddy Kane to assist in making the award ceremony memorable.
"Basically
ever year we salute a deejay who has contributed to the mixshow community,"
McLean explained to AllHipHop.com. "So my thoughts were that there has
got to be a grandfather of it, it’s Grandmaster Flash. [In the past] we’ve [honored]
DJ Clue, Kay Slay, Red Alert, so we’re taking it all the way back. He’s a great
individual who’s contributed so much to Hip Hop; it was just time to present
him with the award."
Big Daddy Kane
offered up a rousing performance which consisted of a medley of some of his
great hits, including Aint No Half Steppin" and "RAW".
Amongst the sea
of noteworthy mixtape deejays, Bay Area slang-master E-40 was on hand to watch
Grandmaster Flash receive his award.
"It was a
wonderful thing," expressed E-40. "Dude [Grandmaster Flash] looks
like he’s in good health, he’s a tycoon, I look up to him. He’s the reason why
all us rappers are eating. It was just monumental. I think I shed a tear or
something, but it was out of joy."
The Mixshow Power
Summit started in 1998, to honor and award mixshow deejays for their contributions
to music.
