Police are investigating Marion “Suge” Knight’s alleged involvement
in an assault on Dr. Dre during the Vibe Awards last month in Santa Monica, California.
Police are investigating
Knight’s possible ties to the assailant, Jimmy “James” Johnson.
Santa Monica police
have been interviewing witnesses in an attempt to determine Knight’s actions
before and after the event.
The Corrections
Department is also involved in the investigation, seeking to determine if Knight
violated his probation.
The conditions
of Knight’s parole bar him from having any contact with Dr. Dre.
Johnson is caught
on tape allegedly assaulting Dr. Dre during the awards ceremony at the Santa Monica airport.
In the resulting
fracas, police claim Johnson was stabbed by G-Unit rapper Young Buck.
After several days
of consulting with attorneys last month, Young Buck turned himself in to Santa
Monica, California police to face charges of attempted murder.
Knight has repeatedly
denied any involvement in the incident and videotape of the melee shows Knight
sitting calm and collected during the brawl.
According to reports,
Dr. Dre met with Santa Monica police on Monday (November 29) to demand that
Johnson be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Dr. Dre and Knight
formed Death Row Records in the early 1990’s.
After several chart
topping albums by Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound and Tupac Shakur, Dre left
due to tensions with Knight.
After a bitter,
public departure, Dre went on to form Aftermath Entertainment, home to Eminem,
50 Cent and G-Unit, Game, Eve, Busta Rhymes Stat Quo and others.
