Queen Latifah has re-launched her Flava Unit
Records imprint with longtime partner Shakim Compere. The new Flava Unit is
not taking the path of a traditional record label. Latifah revealed that artists
signed to Flava Unit will also be "partners" in the label, split royalties
50/50 and will own their masters after they have recouped recording costs.
"We are trying to empower artist and give
them a chance to own themselves." Latifah told AllHipHop.
The first group to be released under the new
deal is The Unit, a nine deep crew consisting of Latifah, the Aposouls, Confidential,
The Athletes and soloists Rowdy Rahz and Storm P. The Unit’s debut album, 100%
Haterproof
is slated to hit stores on October 8."Everybody else has owned us, here’s
your chance to own yourself," Latifah said. In
related news, Latifah is also readying her collection of greatest hits, titled
She’s A Queen. That hits stores on Motown October 29th.
