"Bringing Down the House," Queen Latifah’s
spoof on race relations in America hit home with audiences in North America.
The comedy brought in $31.7 million dollars in
its debut weekend, making it the highest debuting movie over the weekend.
The movie, which has drawn criticism as being
stereotypical, bested the closest competitor, "Tears of The Sun."
That movie stars Bruce Willis and took in a respectable $17.2 million over the
weekend.
"Bringing Down the House" stars Latifah
opposite Steve Martin. Latifah plays a woman wrongly imprisoned and hooks up
with Martin over the internet while she is in jail.
Latifah’s character is released from prison and
when she seeks Martin’s help to overturn her conviction, he rebuffs her attempts.
Latifah proceeds to woo Martin, winning him over by the end of the movie.
Latifah is also nominated for an Oscar as best
supporting actress, due to her performance in "Chicago."
