Robert “RZA” Diggs first came to prominence as a member of the now-legendary Hip Hop group Wu-Tang Clan. The New York City-raised rapper/producer went on to launch a career in the film and television industry as well.
RZA directed motion pictures such as The Man with the Iron Fists, Love Beats Rhymes, and Cut Throat City. Plus, he acted in numerous productions like Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Thriller.
The 51-year-old filmmaker also starred in the Bob Odenkirk-led action thriller Nobody. RZA connected with Ebro Darden on Apple Music to talk about the Ilya Naishuller-directed movie.
“It’s really a really fun film. It’s Oscar season, so a lot of films are very thought-provoking,” said RZA. “This one is just really like, ‘Yo, don’t think about nothing, relax, and just have a moment of enjoyment.’ I’m glad I’m a part of that because I watched it with my family and we were just cheek-to-cheek laughing.”
A few years ago, RZA also teamed with Watchmen and Superfly screenwriter Alex Tse to create the Hulu drama series Wu-Tang: An American Saga. The television program follows the rise of the Wu in the early 1990s.
An American Saga season one featured Ashton Sanders (RZA), Shameik Moore (Raekwon), Siddiq Saunderson (Ghostface Killah), Dave East (Method Man), Joey Bada$$ (Inspectah Deck), TJ Atoms (Russell Ol’ Dirty Bastard), and Johnell Xavier Young as (GZA).

An American Saga has been renewed for a second season. There were some changes made for the upcoming installments. Uyoata Udi (This Is Us, Watchmen) is replacing Bada$$ in the role of Jason Hunter/Rebel/Inspectah Deck. According to RZA, there will be new faces behind the camera too.
“We got some great directors. We got Mario Van Peebles helping out directing, we brought in a few film directors as well,” RZA told Ebro. “I think it’s going to be a really cool, unique season, and I think people are going to learn a lot about Wu-Tang and about the process of making music.”
Chris Robinson, Norberto Barba, Darren Grant, Craig Zisk, Malcolm D. Lee, and Colin Bucksey were among the directors for the 10-episode season one of Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Hulu has yet to reveal the official premiere date for season two.
