Brooklyn bred emcee, Talib Kweli recently appeared
on the "World Famous Wake Up Show," and put to bed any doubts that
may have surfaced about his pending solo album and as well as albums by Black
Star and Reflection Eternal, in which Kweli is a member of both units, respectively.
In the interview with King Tech, Kweli said with all the touring as well as
simultaneously working on his solo album, scheduling has been a problem for
him and his Black Star partner, Mos Def.
"The number one question I get asked is,
when is there gonna’ be a new Black Star album? Mos is my best friend and it
is not a matter of whether we gon’ do it, cause we gon’ do it, but we just got
schedules right now. I’m doing my solo album and he is working on a movie right
now, but we are trying to make it as strong as possible, cause when we get together,
there is no denying us. Mos is my favorite emcee and vice versa, and I think
that is the credit for the success of Black Star."
Kweli’s forthcoming solo debut Kwelity,
which he said will drop in November, features the lead single "Waiting
for the DJ," a collaboration with Philadelphia soul man Bilal. Kweli debuted
the video for the single on BET’s 106 & Park, the video features fellow
Okayplayers such as Dilated Peoples and Black Thought of The Roots. Kweli has
been touring throughout the summer to support his solo album and said he has
begun to work with Hi-Tek on the follow up to their Reflection Eternal album.
Kweli explained in the interview, that after
the Reflection Eternal album dropped, Hi-Tek was working on his solo album,
then he went out to the west coast and did some production work for Raphael
Saadiq and Tha Eastsidaz. He said the group was just taking time off and did
not break up, and that they have begun working together again.
Currently, Talib Kweli and Mos Def have reunited
as Black Star to record a track featured on the soundtrack to the film "Brown
Sugar," which stars Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan, alongside the aforementioned
Mos Def and Queen Latifah, in a story about Diggs and Lathan’s intertwining
lives amid hip-hop. The soundtrack is in stores and the movie opens nationwide
October 11th.
