Two Chicago-bred Hip Hop stars will be part of the forthcoming season of The Chi on Showtime. The Autobiography rapper/social justice activist Vic Mensa (Akilla’s Escape) and Funkdafied rapper/television personality Da Brat (Empire) have been added to the cast.
Mensa is taking on a recurring role for The Chi. Da Brat is credited as a guest star. ATL actor Jason Weaver is also a new addition to the Lena Waithe-created and Common-produced program.
“This show has definitely taken me on a journey,” said Waithe in a press release. “One of learning, healing, and growth. I didn’t know how this season would be received, but the level of engagement and enthusiasm from the fans has been fantastic.”
The Primetime Emmy Award winner added, “I still can’t believe our numbers are up by double digits! The Chi is a team effort, and I’m grateful to continue this journey with such an amazing group of people.”
Showtime released an official trailer for The Chi season 4. The teaser features appearances by series regulars such as Jacob Latimore and Luke James as well as recurring cast members like La La Anthony and Kandi Burruss. Justin Hillian serves as showrunner and executive producer.
“Each season, The Chi’s authentic storytelling resonates more deeply with its devoted and growing audiences,” stated Gary Levine, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc.
Levine added, “Lena Waithe together with Justin Hillian explore the joys and the heartbreak of life on the South Side in a way that is unique on television, and we relish the prospect of continuing that exploration with them.”
Season 4 of The Chi is scheduled to premiere May 23 at 9 pm ET/8 pm CT on Showtime. Season 3 of Black Monday, which stars Don Cheadle and Regina Hall, is set to premiere that same night at 10 pm ET/9 pm CT.
