Mona Scott, President
of Violator Management & Marketing, has opened a new restaurant called J’s
Southern Express in Lower Manhattan.
As president of Violator, Scott has helped guide the careers
of such hip-hop heavyweights as Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep
and many others.
"The idea for opening a restaurant was spawned as a result
of the insatiable demand for my mother-in-law’s (Willie Dell Young) red velvet
cake so I figured, why not go the whole nine yards," said Scott. "Opening
the restaurant is a natural extension for me. Food, like music, is all about
passion, flavor and feeling, and I try to impart that in every venture I undertake."
Scott’s southern will be cuisine available by delivery
or carry-out and the inexpensive menu will include Ma Dell’s Red Velvet Cake,
the specialty dessert created by Mona’s mother-in-law.
J’s Southern Express is named for the first initial in both
of her children’s names (Justin and Jordan) and has already seen a steady stream
of customers.
"We opened our doors to a line of customers wrapped around
the block and thank God it hasn’t stopped since," Scott said.
Scott also took special pride in location. Her partner and chef
Theresa "TJ" Jackson choose the location following 9/11 and are helping
to redevelop the area.
"I felt very strongly about opening our restaurant in Lower
Manhattan (where the Twin Towers were located)," Scott continued. "I’m
fortunate to have connected with TJ and we are excited about doing our part
to help with the revitalization of the area."
J’s Southern Express is located at 98 Chambers Street (between
Church and Broadway). Hours are 10am – 7pm Monday thru Friday with breakfast
starting in September.
