Tyga’s flow is almost identical to that of Lil Wayne. However, his animated adolescent sound gives him a Pop / Rock vibe that sets the two MCs apart. This Compton native and relative to Gym Class Heroes front man, Travis, linked up with Lil Wayne during MTV’s VMA’s and soon after found himself being the newest addition to the Young Money Records family. Tyga’s personality certainly shines on his No Introduction Mixtape, and brings a fresh sound to West Coast Rap.
“Summer Girl” brings a feel-good “cruising through Cali” vibe to the mixtape with its mid-tempo old-school electronic sound and hook. The tough beat accompanied by the dope verse from fellow Young Money associate Nicki Minaj makes “Get With This” one of the mixtapes standout tracks. Although she outshines Tyga when it comes to lyricism, he still manages to hold his own.
Yet, the mixtape can do without “Tyga’s World.” Though it showcases his sense of humor and creativity, the track has no real depth and comes off as pointless and awkward.
Nonetheless, as the mixtape progresses Tyga breaks away from his Weezy-tailored-flow and solidifies his own unique style. No Introduction is an adequate representation of Tyga’s potential. His mainstream sound may give him more praise with his pop/rock fan base, yet he brings the spirit and entertainment back into MCing. More importantly, his lyrical ability should not be overlooked.
