Ali Shaheed Muhammad & Adrian Younge Tapped To Score The Netflix Series Marvel’s ‘Luke Cage’
(AllHipHop News) In an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com in January, record producer/composer Adrian Younge hinted that he and A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad were scoring a big project in the near future. It turns out Younge was referring to creating music for the upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage. [ALSO READ: Grandmaster Flash Joins 1970’s Themed Netflix Series “The Get Down”] Entertainment Weekly spoke with Luke Cage executive producer Cheo Hodari Coker (Southland, Ray Donovan) about the show. The Hollywood veteran discussed how the story of the Marvel superhero set in Harlem will tap into urban culture. “It’s very sophisticated. I mean, it’s got a ’90s Hip Hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us,” said Coker. “We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we’ve got the Marvel action. We’ve got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues.” Coker also serves as the showrunner and writer for Luke Cage. He has experience penning scripts related to Hip Hop themes. Along with Reggie Rock Bythewood, Coker wrote The Notorious B.I.G. biopic Notorious. Luke Cage stars Mike Colter, Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Mahershala Ali, Theo Rossi, Frank Whaley, and Sônia Braga. The series premieres September 30 on Netflix. In addition to scoring Luke Cage, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge are collaborating for the joint album The Midnight Hour. Their production was also included on Kendrick Lamar’s untitled unmastered released in March. Ghostface Killah Wants To Record A “Positive Album” About His Islamic Faith
(AllHipHop News) From Kendrick Lamar opening his critically acclaimed, gold selling album good kid, m.A.A.d. city with a prayer to Christian emcee Lecrae becoming the first rapper to ever win the Best Gospel Album Grammy award, the discussion of faith in Hip-Hop has become widely accepted on a larger scale again. Ghostface Killah says he wants to explore the topic in a future project as well. The New York City native has long incorporated the philosophy of The Five Percent Nation into his work, but he tells Fact Magazine that he now wants to do an entire LP focused on his relationship with God. “I wanna rhyme about God, I wanna do a God album,” says the Wu-Tang Clan member. “God put me here to teach people and to lead people to his direction. I’m not a Christian, I’m a Muslim but God is one. I just believe in the Most High. I know what my duty is.” Ghostface has long be viewed by many in the Hip-Hop community as one of its brightest storytellers. Classic albums like Ironman, Supreme Clientele, and Fishscale paint vivid pictures with lyrics. GFK gives all credit for his ability to put words together to Allah. “It comes from the Most High. It comes from God man, there is no other place where it comes from,” says Ghost. “I pray for him to keep my mind open, and that’s it. Don’t close it on me yet, I’m not finished. I still got a story to tell.” The man also known as Tony Stark released his 10th studio album this week. Twelve Reasons To Die is a concept album produced by composer Adrian Younge (Black Dynamite) and narrated by fellow Wu member RZA. The LP is based on a comic book of the same name that centers around a 1960’s era organized crime syndicate. Ghostface Killah Releasing New Concept Album with Comic Book
(AllHipHop News) Ghostface Killah of Staten Island’s Wu-Tang Clan is kicking off the “The Twelve Reasons to Die National Tour” in support his new album, aptly dubbed Twelve Reasons to Die. Throughout the tour, Ghostface will be backed by a band called Venice Dawn and led by composer Adrian Younge, who concieved the concept album and worked on the acclaimed film Black Dynamite. The story of good and evil follows Tony Starks (one of Ghostface’s alter egos), as a soldier for the 12 Delucas, a 1960’s-era Italian crime family, ultimately turning into a vintage horror film with gangster elements. Interestingly, Wu-Tang Clan founder and producer RZA was the one who chose Younge for the project, giving suggestions and direction throughout the project’s development. “I wanted this album to be the album that went back and started things all over,” Younge says. “I wanted to be the first person to really bring this to hip-hop. I want to bring that organic element back to hip-hop. I’m fortunate enough that I was chosen to be that person to do it.” Tracks on the project feature live strings, horns and drums that were recorded on 2-inch tape giving each song a depth that is often unheard in today’s music. From Adrian Younge’s acclaimed album Something About April to composing the music for the acclaimed film Black Dynamite, to recording an album for the legendary soul group The Delfonics, Younge is looking to change the way people view Hip-Hop and infusing the genre with real compositions. “I want to be known as a composer, not a beat-maker,” he says. “I want to be known as a composer for modern soul music.” “I want this album to change what people think about hip-hop,” Younge says. Twelve Reasons to Die will be available in various forms including a deluxe double CD with instrumentals and a mini comic book, plus a digital deluxe version with instrumentals and digital comic book, multiple vinyl formats and a cassette. The album, including limited edition deluxe bundles, is available for pre-order at soultemplemusic.bandcamp.com. Twelve Reasons to Die will be released on Soul Temple Records and is set to be distributed by RED Music on April 16th. The 49-city national tour kicks off on March 14th at SXSW in Austin, Texas and will run thru early June ending up back in Austin.
