According to a press release, “Four-time Platinum selling artist DMX will play a headlining role at Rock the Bells this summer, performing songs from his six Billboard chart-topping albums. Roc Nation artist J.Cole recently did an interview with Bootleg Kev of Las Vegas’ Hot 97.5, and has spoken out about his dislike for rappers over-sharing and “fighting for attention” on Twitter. Check out what he said below: “I’m not on Twitter no more, I’m not doing it and I’m not going to. I’m sitting and on watching all these artists who I respect — some of them are big artists — on Twitter fighting for attention. Every tweet is like, I’m looking for attention. Retweet me! It comes from this place of fear, like I don’t want people to forget about me. But really your body of work speaks for you, so it’s doing work even when you’re not knowing it. But because people ain’t talking about you on Twitter or your mixtape ain’t trending, you feel a certain kind of way. But when it’s my time, I’m gonna load up all my clips and I’m gonna empty ‘em out.” I think J.Cole may have a point.
(AllHipHop News) After the enormous success that YMCMB recording artist Drake had on the first run of his “Club Paradise Tour” last year, the Toronto native wasted no time putting together a second U.S. leg that recently kicked off in Concord, California. Drake is now giving undiscovered and up-and-coming artists the opportunity of a lifetime, as they can now compete to open for him on 20 “Club Paradise Tour” dates if they win a currently running contest. The nine-time Grammy Award-nominated rapper and singer has partnered up with RHHN and OurStage for the contest that will have its winner chosen in the next week and performing on 20-dates beginning on May 17. Contest entries may be submitted until May 11 at OurStage and will later be judged and voted on by fans through May 15, at which point Drake, RHHN and OurStage will select a winner to appear on the tour. The first “Club Paradise Tour,” which took place during early 2012 featured opening acts like Chase N. Cashe, A$AP Rocky and Kendrick Lamar. This time around, Drake has assembled even more MC’s with J. Cole, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz, French Montana, and Waka Flocka all joining him on the road. In addition, MTV caught up with Drake at his tour opener last week in Concord, California, where he briefly spoke on the potential lineup for this year’s highly-anticipated OVO Festival in Toronto. Past festivals have seen artists like Stevie Wonder, Nas and Rick Ross grace the stage. “The lineup this year is kinda a mash-up of everybody,” Drake said. “That’s the most important show of the year to me, OVO Fest, so I’m hoping that we really make it special this year. The premise of OVO Fest is you never know who you gonna see.” For contest rules and regulations, visit OurStage.

J. COLE DOES A FREESTYLE OVER KIRKO BANGZ “DRANK IN MY CUP”
Rating: 7/10 Portland, Oregon isn’t exactly a city thought of when it comes to Hip-Hop, but newcomer Blazé (pronounced “blah-zay”) is doing his part to put his city on the map. The Portland native recently caught our attention after his debut mixtape, Room & Board, earned “Hot This Week” status shortly after its release on DatPiff. A video freestyle with OMG (Ice Cube’s son), has also helped this 19-year old up-and-comer gain steam, as it recently passed the 50,000 view mark on YouTube. As a college student, Blazé puts forth a project heavily influenced by life in college, reminiscent to the theme of J. Cole’s The Come Up. Blazé uses the college theme to his advantage, rapping on topics that range from pursuing his dreams to pursuing his degree, with a dose of girls and partying, and his kick-game in between. Blazé’s versatile style gives him the ability to speak on these topics throughout all of the tape’s 16 tracks. Bangers like “Over Here”, featuring OMG, find Blazé delivering punchlines over a bass-heavy track on his time spent driving around in L.A., “That sh*t sweep all through LA/ I’m feeling just like a Maverick.” On another banger, “Kat Stacks,” Blazé speeds up his flow and takes time to elaborate on his marijuana habits: “Riding around on two O’s/ like I’m Lance Armstrong.” Blazé invites fellow Portland artists Jové and Cassow to join him and gives the ladies an invitation, “Come converse with a star/ I’m on my Chuck Taylor sh*t.” [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgFvUR-Fgxg&feature=plcp&context=C4dc86c5VDvjVQa1PpcFMRx1Du0A1OUrrCZ2a3HXWxAfazreUllzU%3D] On “Unfinished Business,” Blazé continues to speak to the ladies, but does so in a much more intimate way, aided by Jové on the chorus singing, “We done put in too much work to leave it unfinished, unfinished business.” Blazé lets the ladies know how he handles his business in the bedroom on this steamy track. On the piano-filled “Milana’s Interlude,” Blazé takes things to a more personal level on this standout track by speaking to one special girl in particular about his feelings, “All them girls who be calling, blowing up my line/ You the only one that look like you/ ‘gon get some of my time.” [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsIj0QK_qzk&feature=plcp&context=C4a3ac8dVDvjVQa1PpcFMRx1Du0A1OUgYyoK4EKCyTYQIxO8RR4ik%3D] Blazé’s charismatic flow shines through on “Get By” as he addresses haters, “N*ggas didn’t see me coming / Now they on their plan b sh*t,” as well as school, “With this school sh*t, trust me I’m strugglin’ just to get by / scoping in all my classes for sexy b*tches to sit by.” His charisma continues to show on “Dead Presidents,” as Blazé uses clever wordplay involving a Detroit Lions defensive lineman, who also attended the same high school as him, “These other rappers, they be lyin’ like Ndamukong Suh.” When it’s all said and done, it’s clear that Blazé has the talent and potential to breakout in the music industry. Room & Board is an impressive debut tape from the young MC that will continue to build momentum and keep him headed in the right direction. (AllHipHop News) Every year XXL releases a cover and issue dedicated to their “Freshmen Class,” a group of upcoming, emerging, and buzzing MC’s that the magazine feels are going to be the “next to blow.” This year, in addition to the XXL staff choosing nine of the cover’s 10 artists, the fans were able to decide who would be the final lyricist chosen. On the webpage featuring this year’s “class”, the magazine wrote, “in the past five years that XXL has been picking Freshman classes, never once has making the list been easy. This year included. Similar to 2011, the hype around the Freshmen Class has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, surprising even us with its popularity. For this class the buzz began earlier than ever, four months before the cover was even shot. And it seemed like everyone had a list. From subdued music fans to diehard rap junkies, from Twitter stalkers to industry heavies and featherweights, folks wanted their list to be the XXL list. We listened, asked opinions, took notes.” The lucky 10 to make this year’s cover includes Future, Kid Ink, Danny Brown, French Montana, Macklemore, Don Trip, Machine Gun Kelly, Hopsin, Iggy Azalea, and Roscoe Dash. In 2011, artists Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., CyHi Da Prynce, Mac Miller, Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar, Diggy Simmons, Fred the Godson, Lil Twist, and YG were selected. 2010’s list saw J. Cole, Pill, Wiz Khalifa, Freddie Gibbs, Big Sean, Donnis, Fashawn, OJ Da Juiceman, Nipsey Hussle, and Jay Rock land on the cover. XXL has announced that exclusive content from the “Freshmen Class” will be released beginning on Monday, March 5.
