Dres, Jarobi Discuss Evitan’s “Speed of Life,” New Album Due Out Tomorrow

(AllHipHop News) Rappers Dres and Jarobi are planning to release their collaborative album Evitan: Speed of Life this Friday (September 21). Dres, who was once a member of famed Hip-Hop group Black Sheep, and Jarobi, former member of A Tribe Called Quest, decided to link together to form Evitan, which means “Native” backwards. The longtime friends decided to work together as Jarobi was producing his own solo EP. It was then, that A Tribe Called Quest group member Q-Tip suggested that Jarobi form a group with Dres of Black Sheep. “The stakes are definitely higher now, because we’re wiser, smarter, fathers and we aim to constantly inspire. But we were in control from the very beginning, and free to take it to a whole other level,” Dres told AllHipHop.com in a statement. The revered rappers have lined up high-profile guest appearances for Speed of Life, which features artists like Sadat X, Craig G., Sandman, Bootsy Collins and Mobb Deep’s Havoc.  Speed of Life delves into politics, and other relevant issues in the 21st century. “We wanted to make music that was new, different, not the same old story,” Jarobi said of the upcoming release. Evitan is currently planning a worldwide concert tour in late 2012, that will feature Native Tongue artist Chi Ali, who was recently released from prison after serving 12 years for second degree murder. ATCQ’s “Beats, Rhymes & Life” Nominated for Documentary of the Year at Producer’s Guild Awards

(AllHipHop News) On December 2, the Producer’s Guild of America (PGA) announced their 2012 nominees for Best Documentary. The critically acclaimed, Michael Rapaport directed, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest is one of five documentaries nominated for this year’s awards. In years past, the PGA has been known to be a great barometer for which films will get nominated and ultimately win at the Oscars which will take place in February of 2012. However, unfortunately, the Academy did not include Beats, Rhymes & Life in their 15-film shortlist of documentaries nominated for the upcoming Oscars. There has been some backlash from the Hip-Hop community for the Academy’s snub of the film, yet the PGA nomination is a great achievement for both the filmmaker, the producers, and the members of A Tribe Called Quest. Along with Beats, Rhymes & Life, other nominated documentaries include: Bill Cunningham New York, Project Nim, Senna, and, The Union. All other nominations for the 2012 PGAs will be announced on January 3, with the winners being announced and awarded on January 21. In October, AllHipHop.com got the opportunity to speak to the documentary’s director, Michael Rapaport, at a special screening during the 2011 CMJ Music & Film Festival. Check it out here.
