Smash Mouth’s manager Robert Hayes confirmed the news online writing, “Steve Harwell passed away this morning September 4, 2023 at his home in Boise, Idaho.
When reached for comment, Special Ed told AllHipHop, “I don’t have much details other than they found him in his room.”
Following the groundbreaking success of Belafonte’s 1956 hit “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O),” he became known as the “King of Calypso.”
“He was Omaha’s last real jazz musician from the days of North Omaha being a music town,” longtime friend/mentee Paul Allen IV tells AllHipHop. “But he was a real musician, so he played all styles of music throughout the years. He cared about teaching young people and stood for the excellence that this town was known for in its heyday. He held everyone up to that standard until the end and called them out if they fell short.”
