Lessons from a Legend: The Most Known Unknowns – M.A.R.S Co-Op & Malik B. of The Roots
Unless you’re from Philly, you probably only associate the Legendary Roots Crew as Black Thought, Questlove, and some guys that play instruments. However, that is not the case. The Roots crew runs deep – and two of its members could be dubbed as the “most known unknown” duo in all of Hip-Hop. M.A.R.S Co-op, a.k.a. Black Caesar, and Malik B. – most known for their verses on Illadelph Halflife’s “Clones” by the Roots – checked in with AllHipHop.com to discuss their label, Tali Up Boyz. They also shared some valuable lessons on being a part of the Roots movement, today’s Hip-Hop (like what Malik really thinks of Drake), and surviving in the shadows of greatness. AllHipHop.com: It’s been a minute since you’ve been on the scene. What’s been up? M.A.R.S Co-Op: T.U.B., Tali Up Boyz, is the new label with myself and Malik B. We have D.N.A. (Dat N*gga Ant – not to be confused with battle rapper, DNA), Words from King Midas and Friends Vol. 1, and my project, The Power’s in the Tongue. The first single, “Black Ceasar”, is out now. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I1IX2cqjQ4] Lesson #1 – Rapping Reality in an Unreal Industry M.A.R.S Co-Op: I have a lot more information to give people when I spit; it’s all reality to me. I don’t write about other people’s lives. Either you love it or hate it. We need another lane for this other type of music that we are making. Malik B: That’s why we got T.U.B. Records. We can say whatever we want. M.A.R.S Co-Op: I grew up in the streets. I didn’t grow up poor or f*cked up. I ran away from home, got out on the streets, shooting mofos, doing all types of sh*t. Luckily, at some point in my life, I did have a father. The music saved my life. Lesson #2 – How to Deal with Censorship and Contract Expiration Malik B: In the beginning, [the censoring] wasn’t like that. The [group’s] manager would normally just approve songs. Now they start checking this and telling us take this out. It takes away from that UMMPH. I mean, it got to the point [where if] we made reference of the devil, all of the sudden we made to look like we worship the devil. Then, Def Jam will say something like, ‘Nah, take that out. People might get offended.’ And I’m like, it’s not even like that. Oh, and for the record, I was never fired from [The Roots]; my contract ran out. M.A.R.S Co-Op: We brought the streets to The Roots. Early on, they was doing street festivals and stuff, and then me and Malik was doing stuff that our peoples liked. Me and Dice [Raw of The Roots] was from Logan, so our style was different. We was that street stuff. We came up with people like Larry Larr, Mike from Boyz II Men, so we knew what it was when it came to the music. Lesson #3 – Keeping Philly’s Artistry in a “Clone” Landscape Malik B: Man, it’s no artistry in the game. Philly is being looked at hard right now ‘cause Meek Mill is killing ‘em. It’s like this once every five years; somebody will come out of Philly blow, and then that’s it. But, Drake? I think he soft. No, not soft – feminine. AllHipHop.com: I hear you and Freeway are doing something with “Beard Gang”. Malik B: Yeah, that’s my man. See, this is the thing. We from Logan, but Free is from down West Philly. So now, we got Jakk Frost, who was doing independent deals since like ’91. Wasn’t nobody doing that. But now I got some stuff coming out with them and Mr. Green. So now, you got Freeway, me, Jakk Frost, Sunwun, and Reef Tha Lost Cause. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2e1KtfUiwA] AllHipHop.com: I saw the video for that, which was crazy! The patterns and the way it was put together… Malik B: Yeah. I do that all day. I get the patterns and fill it up with words. I put all my content and fill up patterns with words. All of a sudden, we got a song – Hip-Hop Bee Bop. So, on my joint with Mr. Green, I’m just spitting and then they mixed it in with this dude on guitar. It’s ill. I’m having fun making music again. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbhuq50u8BE] Lesson #4 – Taking Stock and Moving Forward M.A.R.S Co-Op: After getting jerked around in so many directions, we got T.U.B., and we putting out the stuff the streets want. Look for our projects – my single “Black Caesar” is out now. Then we got King Midas and Friends Vol. 1 in like three weeks through our distribution deal with SoulSpazm. Follow M.A.R.S. EP Review: Young Gliss’ [BGA] “The Glimmer EP”
Rating: 7.5 / 10 After a quick play of Young Gliss’ latest project, to say that he is a rookie would be “technically” accurate due to his sudden exposure, but misleading all the same. In any case, the newest 14-track outing from the Philadelphia MC has him showcasing his skills for a little less than an hour alongside several featured MCs, and although they may initially draw you in, it’s the skills from Gliss that hold your attention. The Glimmer EP may have a different reason behind its name, but the flashes of promise shown throughout the project is well-worth noting and watching for in the future. One of the best things about The Glimmer EP is the choice in production. It’s not overpowering like most instrumentals that garner radio play, but instead sounds smooth and melodic, to the point where it’s easy to zone out to the music before you realize it’s over. The project plays more as a collection of songs as opposed to a flowing album, but that’s not a negative in this case; if anything this gives him a little wider of a platform to show what he’s capable of, and from him holding the microphone solo on “100 On The Dash” to splitting MC duties with others on posse cuts like “No One Can Stop Us Now” (which features Prodigy, Jon Connor, Killer Mike, Lo Keys & Just Shawn), he takes full advantage. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7lHg-17j54] Gliss isn’t the type of MC to weaken his flow just to fit a punchline, and that dedication to the deeper content in his rhymes is also well-represented here. Songs like “Expect Delays” (feat. Chris Young the Rapper) and “Awake” show the introspective side of Gliss, but not in a cliché, uninventive way. Although at times the project does seem to hit a lull due to possibly a few too many uninspired features (I’m just not feeling Dosage’s guest verse on “Everything”, I’m sorry), Gliss does a great job of keeping the focus on himself regardless. As alluded to earlier, the entire project is a reflection of Young Gliss as he showcases his lyrical ability, and he seems hell bent on gaining recognition his way. Choosing to have an EP that’s longer than nine songs is unconventional, and choosing to not rely on his All-Star family connection is even more honorable in a Hip-Hop environment where rappers name-drop to get ahead. He could’ve easily spring-boarded off the popularity of his cousin and legendary Roots drummer ?uestlove to gain looks, or name-dropped Philadelphia MC and Roots affiliate Dice Raw to grab Hip-Hop heads’ attention, but he instead chose to forego that and make people interested in him through his music. It’s slightly ironic that with all of that said, The Glimmer EP could’ve been better if it wasn’t for some of the features weighing it down as a whole. Even with its slight flaws, Young Gliss still proves that he’s one to watch for in the upcoming months, and with his emergence, it’s hard to deny the fact that Philadelphia may be one of the biggest places to find talent right now. Police From Five Police Departments Called Over Meek Mill Show
(AllHipHop News)Police from five different departments were called in to disburse a rowdy crowd that had gathered to see Meek Mill in Connecticut over the weekend. Meek hit the stage at Club Lush, a venue that holds about 600 people in Danbury, Connecticut. According to local reports, thousands of people came out to see the rapper, who was extremely late for his performance. At least a dozen police cars from five different districts were called in to quell a number of disturbances that had broken out as a result of the rapper’s tardiness. “There was a huge crowd there to hear a hot performer,” Mayor Mark Boughton told the Stamford Advocate. “From my understanding, he was really late. This was a very popular entertainer who belongs in a venue that can accommodate 2,000 or 3,000 people, not 600. Throw in alcohol and that age group…” Several people were arrested, while two people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. In more positive news, Meek Mill hosted a coat drive in his hometown of Philadelphia over the weekend as well. The rapper was at 24th and Diamond where he and several associates passed out coats to those in need, in preparation for the cold weather. “Wen people do s**t for da hood dey wanna call the news for publicity. We just put in da work on da low,” Meek Mill tweeted today (October 23).
