Government Closing Tons of California Marijuana Dispensaries! Federal prosecutors said at a news conference that the crackdown is directed at the “commercial marijuana industry,” particularly operations near schools, parks and athletic fields. “We want to put to rest the notion that large marijuana businesses can shelter themselves under state law,” said U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, the top federal prosecutor in San Francisco. Haag said the 1996 voter-approved law “has been hijacked by profiteers … using the cover to make enormous amounts of money.” In a separate statement, the U.S. attorney for the central district of California, André Birotte Jr., said: “It is important to note that for-profit, commercial marijuana operations are illegal not only under federal law, but also under California law. While California law permits collective cultivation of marijuana in limited circumstances, it does not allow commercial distribution through the store-front model we see across California.” Thoughts? What do you guys out in California think about this? Will the West Coast “medicinal weed” crowd survive? Avengers Assemble!!! Ryan Leslie: The Rapper?

Jaheim, Musiq Soulchild, and Tank – some rappers just seem to fit better with rappers than others. Then, there’s Grammy-nominated Ryan Leslie. The Harvard-educated music man, Ryan Leslie, originally from Washington, D.C., has been known over the years for his Hip-Hop flavored anthems such “Diamond Girl” and “Addicted” with Cassie. The fact that he plays the piano and has an Ivy League educational background may have lumped him into a certain lane with his R&B peers. Still, Leslie says fans should get ready to see him in a whole new light – as a rapper. MC-ing isn’t new to the crooner, he says – it just hasn’t had its turn in the sun. AllHipHop.com interviewed Ryan Leslie as he prepares for a special “Black Music Month” performance on June 15 at the 14th Street Apple Store in New York, and later, Tunisia, North Africa on a goodwill mission. He also dropped us his Top 5 Dead or Alive before signing off: AllHipHop.com: Hi Ryan, how are you? Ryan: I’m good, Seandra. Thanks so much for having me at 11:30 on a Monday morning! I’m actually going to be talking to London and Paris coming up so…they’re six hours ahead of me, so I’ve been up since about 6 already. AllHipHop.com: Oh my goodness. Well you did a good job performing at [Hot97] Summer Jam recently, a super quick job, but good. Ryan: Thank you very much. AllHipHop.com: Was it your first time at Summer Jam? Ryan: Well, that was the longest I’ve ever been on stage at Summer Jam. I came out with Jim Jones and Dipset in 2009. I made a record with Jim Jones called “Precious.” AllHipHop.com: Right, ok. Well, I want to backtrack a little bit, and just talk a little bit about your background real quick for anybody who’s been living under a rock for the past few years and doesn’t know a lot about you. The thing that always stood out about you for me was your musicianship. You play the piano, you know, and you’re not just a guy who walked into the studio without some training. So tell me about your early music years. Ryan: Well, I come from a musical family. My parents are both musicians. My father, his main instrument was the trumpet, and he still plays from time to time, and my mother’s main instrument is the piano. She still plays and loves it to death. So it was just only natural that me and my sister would be drawn to music as a way to express ourselves and as a way to just have a bond with the family, I mean, we would sing together and it was a really big part of my childhood, and you know, my parents are Salvation Army officers so we didn’t really have the money to have formal training. I mean they tried to pick and choose what they could afford to send us to in terms of education, education and extracurriculars. So my father really, you know, he wanted me to go to karate school (laughs)… AllHipHop.com: You said karate? [laughter] Ryan: Yeah. Japanese karate. And my mother, who’s actually half Chinese, her cousin in Canada actually ran a karate school so there were many summers that they would just have me go up to Canada to train. And my sister was actually the one who got the piano lessons. I was so jealous. But what I would do is I would take her piano books, or take my mother’s piano books, you know, and I taught myself all of the musical proficiency that I have today. And you know that’s not to say I didn’t have an environment to practice in because the Salvation Army has a really rich musical tradition, so I was in band camp for a week out of a year or something like that. Really a lot of the musicanship and my ability to play instruments just comes from my own curiosity and approach to learning which was “hey, if I can’t take classes I’ll teach myself.” AllHipHop.com: Right. You have a pretty impressive educational background, too, that people might not know about. What did you study when you were in college? Ryan: Well, I actually went to went to…I concentrated in…I majored in Government at Harvard with a concentration in Economics (Macroeconomics) and Political Science. AllHipHop.com: But the music, I guess, rose to the surface as what you really felt your passion was. Is that it? Ryan: Absolutely. Absolutely. AllHipHop.com: Ok. So I want to ask you about the new album “Les is More” and first I want to ask you to explain the title. Why is less more? Ryan: Why is less more? Well less is actually a play on my name, L-e-s, and in a lot of my productions or when I’ve actually mentioned my tag in songs that I produce or I’m a part of, I use the shortened version of my name RLES and so this album’s title is actually that everyone’s always toyed with when they hear my nickname RLES. “Oh RLES is more. You should do an album like that.” And at this juncture in my career, I really, really feel strongly about sharing more of myself, and what I mean by that is I feel like there are so many other dimensions to me that I really haven’t shared as an artist to this point, and one of the most probably obvious changes from everything you’ve heard from me is that this album is a Rap album so to actually go from being a Grammy-nominated contemporary R&B artist to deciding his next album is going to be a Rap album may catch some people off guard. But I’ve been rapping ever since I was a teenager and actually you know that’s because my sister always had the beautiful voice in the family, and I just always had an affinity for Rap as a medium of expressing myself. So I […]

Teedra Moses: First Lady of Maybach Music Group

Teedra Moses is quite possibly the most underrated singer-songwriter to integrate R&B and rap in the new millennium. According to Teedra, she weathered one hell of a storm through the abrupt death of TVT Records and managed to stay highly appreciated within the foreign tour circuit. When most would have given up, she decided to stick it out, which undoubtedly strengthened her artistic thirst. No stranger to the pen, Teedra has written for some of the best in the game, including legends Mary J. Blige, and Raphael Saadiq. While producing her own sound, her dedication landed her with a new, unique opportunity to become the first lady of Maybach Music Group’s (MMG) label, under the expertise of Rick Ross. Now, it seems that Teedra’s moment is finally near, as she works on her debut release under MMG, and fans wait with great anticipation. Teedra never bites her tongue in expressing her music or her interviews. Take a moment to reflect on her wisdom as she talks to AllHipHop.com: AllHipHop.com: Teedra, I know your mother was a singer in gospel. How much of her work influenced the powerful voice that you have today? Teedra Moses: Initially, I didn’t think that I was influenced by it much because I didn’t hear gospel in my voice very much. The more that I’ve developed my instrument, my mother comes out a lot, and I think that her influence starts to come out more so during my stage performance. Before my album, I didn’t do many stage performances, but since my album, that’s pretty much all I’ve been doing. The gospel side of me, the powerfulness of my voice, definitely comes on stage. AllHipHop.com: I read that after you broke your leg you had the “light bulb moment” where you decided to pursue your music. What’s the story with that? Teedra Moses: Yes, because I was a wardrobe stylist. As much as I enjoyed hanging with my friends and traveling around the world and working around music, it wasn’t my passion. It was something I was doing because it was there at the time. You get to an age where you’re trying to figure out what it is you want to do. You’re trying to figure out what your purpose is. I think when I broke my leg on the video shoot, I was sitting there on workman’s comp and just couldn’t move, I started thinking about what it is that I really wanted to do. I love music. My children’s father was a rapper, and he would bring beats home, and I would freestyle songs over them all the time. So, I just decided to pursue something that was a little more passionate to me, and really more so because I needed to figure out a way to make money for me and my kids. My children’s father and I weren’t together anymore, and that was my way to make money. And it became something that I fell in love with, and it became less and less about the money. It was more about me finding something that was my purpose. AllHipHop.com: Your last album, Complex Simplicity, was amazing, but it may not have achieved the same amount of commercial success as some of the other R&B starlets’ albums. Looking back on that situation, what would you say that you’ve learned from that musically? Teedra Moses: Keep doing what you want to do. It doesn’t matter if they like it or not, as long as you love it. I think what I learned from not selling records is that you can have a really great product and it still not mean anything. I really feel like it was a wonderful album. I didn’t know then how to hustle my music; now I’ve learned more about that. I didn’t know then how much you can’t rely on a label; now I’ve learned more about that. It’s less of what I should change about how I make music, but more of what I should incorporate or how I hustle my music. I really don’t feel like we made a bad product. I feel it was a really good product; a little bit before it’s time, and it was also on a label that didn’t understand it. I learned that I have to be more than an artist that writes, sings, and chooses my tracks. I have to really see a vision for the entire process of my career and kind of tell people what I’m looking to do so we can work from that – to not have someone dictate to me what’s going to happen. AllHipHop.com: I know that you’re not just an artist. You’ve had a lot of success as a songwriter. I’m sure you love them both, but do you fancy one over the other? Teedra Moses: I definitely like writing for myself more. I definitely like being an artist. I like writing period, before singing or performing or anything. I like writing for myself more, because you have to strip yourself down a lot when you write for other people. At this point, I just write songs. If someone happens to like a song that I write, then that’s great. Or, if they see a resemblance of themselves or can relate to it, that’s great. I stopped writing for other people two to three years ago, because I saw that it was taking away from my chops. As the individual that I am as an artist, it was taking away from that. So, I really would have to lean towards being an artist, because initially that’s what I wanted to be. I started writing for other people because they liked the songs; not really because that’s what I wanted to be – a writer for other people. AllHipHop.com: Your writing style and lyricism is like the perfect cross of beauty and gangsta. How is it that you can go back and forth between two opposing styles with such ease? Teedra Moses: That’s […]
