Yelawolf To Release "Psycho White EP" With Travis Barker Before Shady Album; "Country Cousins" With Big K.R.I.T. Also In Works

(AllHipHop News) Billboard is reporting that before Yelawolf continues work on his sophomore Shady Records album, Love Story, the Huntsville, Alabama, native will be releasing the Psycho White EP with producer, drummer and close friend, Travis Barker. According to Yelawolf, the Psycho White EP is set to include five brand-new songs: “Every time we would get in the lab we’d knock something out. We just collaborated and… had a meeting of the minds. There’s a lot of cool stuff we came up with.” While there is no official release date for Psycho White EP yet, Yela told Billboard that all the logistics are in the works. “I don’t know Travis’ situation fully, the legals of it, whether it’s going to be free or sold or whatever but it’ll be available,” he said. “As artists, hopefully we can get it on the shelves, but we’ll get it out there somehow. I’m just hyped for people to hear it.” Despite the upcoming EP, new album and multiple other projects on the horizon, Yela is far from throwing in the towel on his debut, Radioactive. “We’re still in full Radioactive mode,” he said. “I did Radioactive in two weeks, and I don’t want to feel that rushed ever again. I’m very proud of it. But just looking up to people, the pioneers who put out great albums, I’d like to put a few months into a great album.” Yela also told Billboard  that he has an 11-minute short “horror film” in the bag to be used as a visual accompaniment to his song, “Growin’ Up in the Gutter,” which is also on his Shady Records debut, Radioactive. “It’s really over the top, really… intense. It’s super controversial. It was supposed to be out a couple months ago, but there’s a lot of legal bullsh*t, clearing footage and stuff. That’s put a damper on it, but it’ll be coming out soon,” remarked Yelawolf. In addition to the Psycho White EP with Barker and the “Growin’ Up in the Gutter” short-film, Yelawolf, who teamed up with UK singer Ed Sheeran back in February for the 4-track Slumdon Bridge EP, is also still keeping his fingers crossed regarding the much-talked about collaborative project between himself and Def Jam recording artist, Big K.R.I.T. Yela said, “[Country Cousins] been like a two-year thing, man; I’m busy, he’s busy, and it doesn’t get done. We know that when we get together, it can’t be half-assed. That’s my homey for life, so it could go down at any moment. There’s no definite date, no definite time. I’m such a huge fan of his. I really want to do music with him, so I know it’ll happen.”

XXL Reveals Cover For Its 2012 “Freshmen Class”

(AllHipHop News) Every year XXL releases a cover and issue dedicated to their “Freshmen Class,” a group of upcoming, emerging, and buzzing MC’s that the magazine feels are going to be the “next to blow.” This year, in addition to the XXL staff choosing nine of the cover’s 10 artists, the fans were able to decide who would be the final lyricist chosen. On the webpage featuring this year’s “class”, the magazine wrote, “in the past five years that XXL has been picking Freshman classes, never once has making the list been easy. This year included. Similar to 2011, the hype around the Freshmen Class has continued to grow by leaps and bounds, surprising even us with its popularity. For this class the buzz began earlier than ever, four months before the cover was even shot. And it seemed like everyone had a list. From subdued music fans to diehard rap junkies, from Twitter stalkers to industry heavies and featherweights, folks wanted their list to be the XXL list. We listened, asked opinions, took notes.” The lucky 10 to make this year’s cover includes Future, Kid Ink, Danny Brown, French Montana, Macklemore, Don Trip, Machine Gun Kelly, Hopsin, Iggy Azalea, and Roscoe Dash. In 2011, artists Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., CyHi Da Prynce, Mac Miller, Yelawolf, Kendrick Lamar, Diggy Simmons, Fred the Godson, Lil Twist, and YG were selected. 2010’s list saw J. Cole, Pill, Wiz Khalifa, Freddie Gibbs, Big Sean, Donnis, Fashawn, OJ Da Juiceman, Nipsey Hussle, and Jay Rock land on the cover. XXL has announced that exclusive content from the “Freshmen Class” will be released beginning on Monday, March 5.

Mixtape Review: Yelawolf & Ed Sheeran’s “Slumdon Bridge” [EP]

Rating: 8 / 10 The best way to describe Yelawolf’s musical pattern as of late is to simply say “Expect the Unexpected.” Since his Shady Records release Radioactive, the Alabama native has been doing everything in his power to remain at the top of his game, including taking the unorthodox road of releasing another EP while promoting his album. The “Slumdon Bridge” EP has him teaming with up-and-coming UK singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran to make something quite unlike anything you may have heard this year. Although the EP is only four songs, it’s well worth the download and sparks the question if they’ll work together again in the future. To be clear, this is a collaborative effort from Yela and Ed, but that becomes obvious by the end of the second track listed. The surprise is how well they actually mesh; Yelawolf takes the lyrical route, while more often than not Sheeran provides the powerful melodies that lace the songs even while Yelawolf rhymes (during the intro to “You Don’t Know (For F**k’s Sake)”, Yelawolf even refers to him as the “Melody Man”). Sheeran even ventures into spitting a “rhyme” in the same song, but it fits well with the flow of the EP. The best part about the project is the fact that within such a short amount of time, Yelawolf figured out a way to show off so many different styles of his lyricism. From the storytelling angle on “London Bridge” to the building rap crescendo on “You Don’t Know (For F**k’s Sake)”, to the all-out aggression on “Faces” (which was done so well it could’ve been slid on the end of “Radioactive” as a bonus cut), to the patterned flow on “Tone”, it all feels like Yelawolf from start to finish. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki8mLcUzf-c] Aside from the somewhat obvious flaw of brevity here (you can listen to the entire EP in under 15 minutes), there’s not too much to complain about unless you’re looking for the “Hard White” sound from Yelawolf. This isn’t that type of project, but that’s not a bad thing in this case. It’s a unique project from start to finish, and it is well worth noting that Yelawolf and Ed Sheeran are talented enough to pull this off without seeming like a gimmick. It’s the most unlikeliest of teams, but it works. Here’s to hoping that we see more of them together in the future. Download the EP Here (via DatPiff)
