Monday, May 9: Puff Daddy & Jimmy Paige Perform “Come With Me” Live on 'SNL '

While some artists have disapproved of Hip-Hop sampling and interpolating, others have embraced it and seen it as a way to introduce their work to a new audience. One such example is how legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page teamed up with Puffy for “Come With Me” off the Godzilla soundtrack. On Saturday May 9, 1998, the two performed it together on Saturday Night Live’s 23rd season finale.
Tuesday, May 10: Bushwick Bill Loses His Right Eye

After getting in a fight with his girlfriend, Bushwick Bill was shot in the face. Ultimately, he ended up losing an eye as a result. In one of the most memorable examples of Hip-Hop album cover art, the Geto Boys’ We Can’t Be Stopped features of the three of them in a hospital hallway with Bill’s injured face exposed while sitting on a gurney.
Wednesday, May 11: Onyx Puts Out “Slam”

In 1993, on this day, Queens, New York Hip-Hop group Onyx released the second single from their debut album. “Slam” was a major breakthrough for them and helped push Bacdafucup to platinum status. In addition to peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 100, the song has held up well over the years too and has been featured in numerous commercials, television shows, and movies.
Thursday, May 12: Spice 1 Releases His Debut Album

On this day, 24 years ago, Oakland rapper Spice 1 dropped his eponymous debut album. The 14-track collection provided a no holds barred depiction of life in the ghetto. Combine that with his storytelling abilities, the result was a solid major label project which set the stage for his magnum opus one year later, 187 He Wrote.
Friday, May 13: Happy Birthday, PMD

Happy Born Day to PMD. As a member of EPMD, Parrish Smith helped the group achieve commercial and critical acclaim with albums such as Strictly Business, Unfinished Business, and Business as Usual. Not only was the group an excellent platform for Parrish to showcase his rhymes, it highlighted Erick Sermon’s production abilities as well and introduced Redman to the masses.
Saturday, May 14: Happy Birthday, Pusha T

Happy Birthday to rapper Pusha T. After getting his start with his brother, No Malice, as one half of the duo Clipse, he ventured off on his own and dropped solo projects, including the highly praised My Name is My Name in 2013, and just last November Kanye West appointed Pusha the new president of GOOD Music.
Sunday, May 15: Cannibal Ox Releases 'The Cold Vein'

Before he was part of Run the Jewels, El-P dropped another jewel behind the boards with Cannibal Ox, The Cold Vein. Released on this day in 2001, Vast Aire and Vodul Mega delivered an incredibly dope independent classic with exceptional lyricism and soundscapes worthy of such rhymes. Not surprisingly, the project was included on many “best of” lists that year.
