guitarist/songwriter Stephen "Steve" Cropper has filed a lawsuit against

Universal Music Publishing Group, claiming the company has cheated him out of

millions in unpaid royalties. Cropper, a legendary guitarist who helped define

the sound of Memphis via Stax Records, claims that UMG illegally took 25% of his

royalties and then paid him based off 75% of his earnings. Cropper, a founding

member of Booker T. & The M.G.s, has written songs for such legendary artists

as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd and others. His works have been sampled

by rappers like Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul, Big Daddy Kane and numerous others.

Cropper seeks an undisclosed amount for fraud, breach of contract and misrepresentation.

Los

Angeles recently lost popular Hip-Hop station KKBT 100.3 The Beat, as the station

re-launched on Dec. 29 with the new call letters, KRBV V100. According to industry

trade Radio

and Records, the new urban contemporary station will drop the station’s

previous, familiar moniker "The Beat." The new on-air lineup has been

confirmed, with Cliff Winston replacing "The Tom Joyner Morning Show."

Shirley Hayes airs in the mid-day, followed by popular syndicated talk-show host

Michael Baisden. Others on the station include John Monds and Myke Julius. "Radio

One is the urban radio specialist, and we are very committed to providing Los

Angeles with a station dedicated to serving the community," said Cathy Hughes,

Radio One Founder/Chairperson. "I am very excited about the launch of V100

because we have enlisted the best talent in Barry Mayo, consultant and creator

of the urban adult contemporary format, and Steve Candullo, who has an impressive

track record of turning around underperforming media assets, to help launch this

new product. This is a very exciting time for Radio One/Los Angeles."
