Hip-Hop activists, recording artists and college students are looking to raise awareness of the physical and emotional destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina through the Katrina on the Ground initiative. The program is a College Student Spring Break initiative that aims to highlight the effects of Katrina and the recovery process in the Gulf region. The goal is to organize resources that will restore financial independence and reclaim the legal rights of hurricane survivors. Participants include rapper Mos Def, activist/author/congressional hopeful Kevin Powell and Jeff “Cousin Jeff” Johnson. Over 1,000 students from various universities will send volunteers to assist families affected by Katrina. Katrina on the Ground has also partnered with grass-roots organizations in the Gulf region, including the People’s Hurricane Relief Fund, and is sponsored by the National Urban League, the NAACP, the Black Leadership Forum and the Twenty First Century Foundation. A press conference to discuss the initiative will be held Friday (March 3) at the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York.
