(AllHipHop News) On Sunday, LL Cool J made history by becoming the first rapper to be recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors. LL celebrated the achievement by posting a message on his Instagram page.

The New York City native wrote:

An unforgettable evening… I will remember and cherish this honor for the rest of my life. Thank you to the performers tonight. I am honored and humbled. 🙏 Thank you [Kennedy Center] Honors and everyone that has supported this journey. I am forever grateful for this moment. Keep loving and keep inspiring. Musician/record producer Lionel Richie, singer-songwriter/actress Gloria Estefan, dancer/choreographer Carmen de Lavallade, and television writer/producer Norman Lear joined LL Cool J in the Kennedy Center Honors class of 2017.

“Each of this year’s Honorees became known to and loved by the world because of their complete originality and bold genius,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter in a press release. “They are creators of the highest order, and as President Kennedy’s living memorial, the Kennedy Center is proud to shine a light on their boundless ‘contributions to the human spirit.'”
