Mary J. Blige Talks ‘The Wiz’ And Wanting To See Her Life Story On Broadway

THE QUEEN OF HIP-HOP SOUL SAYS BEING IN ‘THE WIZ’ IS A DREAM COME TRUE

Mary J. Blige is taking her talents to Broadway and will be starring in the upcoming remake of The Wiz. The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul will be starring as Evilene, the Wicked Witch of the West alongside Ne-Yo, Queen Latifah and David Alan Grier. The R&B vet said the play is something she “dreamed of being a part of.”

“We all wanted to be standing next to Michael Jackson as Dorothy or even playing Evillene or just being Auntie Em!,” she told Playbill. “We just always wanted to be a part of it, and it’s something we [now] get to share with generations — new generations that probably don’t even know anything about The Wiz.”

Even though she will be taking the Broadway stage as Evilene, Blige said she wouldn’t mind being behind the scenes and seeing her own life story being brought to life.

“I definitely want to see the Mary J. Blige story — or just one of the album cycles — on Broadway,” she said. “To just have one of those albums, turns or times on Broadway would be crazy.”

The Wiz will broadcast live on NBC on Dec. 3rd.
