MC Lyte Says Fetty Wap Is A ‘Feminist Rapper’ (VIDEO)

THE HIP-HOP VET PRAISES THE ‘1738’ RAPPER

Last week, the White House Council on Women and Girls held a summit that focused on issues that affect the lives of women of color. During the summit, Charlene Carruthers, Executive Director of the Black Youth Project 100 and Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art moderated the “Hip-Hop: Women’s Vulnerability and Values” panel. Panelists included Angie Martinez and MC Lyte.

During the panel, MC Lyte praised Fetty Wap for being a “feminist rapper” and being “able to get [his] message out without degrading [his] sister.”

“He may have a very unique way of presenting his ideas, but he does love women,” Lyte said. “For what he’s up against in this climate with all of the other emcees, he’s taking a stand. He’s being pretty courageous right now with what it is he presents in his music because it’s really not the norm.”

Lyte also mentioned Kendrick Lamar and Talib Kweli as rappers who have a more gentle approach when they rap about women.
