Mos Def, Dave Chappelle Clean Up Cable Award Show

Mos Def and Dave Chappelle won multiple awards at the 11th Annual National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) awards show last week in Beverly Hills, California. The NAMIC Awards is the only industry event that recognizing cable’s commitment to producing quality, culturally diverse original programming content. The evening was co-hosted by Lisa Ling, Lisa Vidal and Chris Spencer. AJ and Free, Michael Clarke Duncan, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Tim Reid and others were among the celebrities that attended the annual ceremony. Mos Def won two awards for his performance in the HBO Films original movie “Something the Lord Made.” The rapper/actor won Best Dramatic Performance, while the movie took home Best Drama honors. Dave Chappelle’s “Chappelle’s Show” won Best Comedic Performance while “Chappelle’s Show” tied for Best Comedy with TV Land’s show “Fatherhood.” Chris Rock’s “Chris Rock: Never Scared” and BET’s “BET Awards 2004” tied for Best Music and Variety” honors. The 25-year-old organization also recognized the late Ossie Davis, who passed away in February of 2005 at the age of 87. Legendary filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles and Glynn Turman presented the NAMIC North Star Award to Davis for his longstanding commitment to bringing diversity to the film industry. The award was accepted by Davis’ widow and fellow pioneer, Ruby Dee. The awards will be broadcast on premium cable channel Starz in Black.
