Beyoncé has the main role and stars opposite of Mekhi Phifer. Mos Def plays the villain in the movie. The movie is based on a 19th century opera by George Bizet. The movie centers around a romance between a woman who works in a cigarette factory and a solider from the Spanish army. The play was ultimately updated and turned into the 1954 film, Carmen Jones, which starred Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge. The movie is narrated by Da Brat and Jermaine Dupri and Lil Bow Wow also have small roles in the movie, which was directed by Robert Townsend (The 5 Heartbeats, Hollywood Shuffle, B.A.P.S). Former Source employee, Mike Elliot produced the movie. He left The Source after the now infamous Source Awards incident.
